Tama 15-inch Snare Comparison OH mic ONLY

Recording using a single overhead microphone, a Shure KSM32 portioned directly over the snare drums.
Tama Star Reserve 15x8 maple/bubinga snare TMBS158S
Heads: Evans Reverse power center over Evans Hazy 300
Tama Aronoff Signature 15x4 brass snare KA154
Heads: Evans UV1 over Remo Ambassador snare side
Snappy (both snares): Tama standard 15" steel wires MS20SN15S
OH: Shure KSM32
The drums were not tuned to the same pitch, they were not tuned low, they were tuned to sound good for a simple comparison.
OH was EQ'd slightly to bring out the subtle differences between the two drums.
Kick drum: Tama Starclassic bubinga 22x18
Hi hat: Paiste 16" PST-X
Crash: Paiste 16" PST-X
Ride: Paiste 22" 602 Modern Essentials
Lastly, this recording was made with the kit in the center of a large 40'x60' room. No reverb or other effects were added-or removed-to the mix.

I like this version better than the version with close mics. I think the single OH helps show the massive presence that 15" snares bring to the party. Beautiful sounding drums, btw. I could see them both being great for blues, rock, or any other style where you want a nice POW from the snare. I bet the Arnoff with an Aquarian Hi Energy would make a fantastic studio drum for tracking metal.

I agree. OH mics capture the true sound of a snare drum. The close mic seems to capture mostly impact and punch. Very little snappy sound.

They sound very similar with the muting gel applied. Without the gel, the harmonics reveal the subtle differences.

The tama snare sounds better in my opinion
