I've always played Pearl kits, and in 2018 I fulfilled my lifetime ambition of getting a Pearl Masterworks kit, which is my pride and joy. Obviously I knew that Tama and all of the other manufacturers made brilliant gear as well. I also bought a Tama Starphonic 13"x7" steel snare drum at the end of 2021. It's the only Tama product I own. I paid about £300 in the UK for it, and for the quality of the materials, components, and the finish, it was a bargain really. I'm massively impressed with the components and how they perform, the workmanship and finish, the design featurers, and so on. Watching this video made me like Tama even more. Magnificent manufacturer, magnificent retailer.

Loved the jacket. Loved the drums. Loved the playing. Loved the factory tour. Loved Shane's choice of the Reserve snares. And particularly liked the bit about supporting the independent dealers. Class. 👍🫡

Never owned a Tama set but they are one of several companies that brought quality and innovation to the drum industry. This was really enjoyable to get a behind the scenes look of their process. But what Shane said about independent drum stores was more important. Just purchasing from somewhere based on price is really a terrible race to the bottom. I was just in Portsmouth this past Thursday and spent several hours in the store. Tony and Barrett spent so much of their time with me discussing drums and hardware and never made me feel rushed. It was more like visiting with friends (and thanks to the both of you for helping me nail one of the last Noble & Cooley Copper snare drums available). You can't get that experience from an Amazon. And Shane has amazingly created an online presence that "feels" like his store. There is a value to the independent drum store that you can't put a dollar value on. It's so very important for us as drummers to always support these places with our drum and equipment purchases, big or small.

Had a Pearl clear acrylic double set (I play on monster kit) that I bought in the mid 70's. Now I've long since retired so I did myself a final gift (I'm 68) and bought myself (with my wife's blessing) A Tama Starclassic Walnut Birch Molten Brown Burst Set with all the sizes. Since this was during co-vid they had to come directly from China. Took over a year to get my final set. I bought these thru Sweetwater which is the ultimate for buying anything musical. NO chance of not getting what you paid for. These drums sound stellar. Could've bought Ludwig, Yamaha, Gretch, or any of the other drum manufacturers but I wisely chose Tama. Paid cash because I'm spending our sons inheritance. You absolutely can't go wrong with Tama. Sweetwater as well.

Wow! I was between the Tamas and the Pearls that I now have. I had a 9 piece Tama Granstars which were the same shell composition as the Superstars at the time, birch. They had just come out with the square shells, so I did that and I loved those drums dearly. I sold them like an idiot and have always regretted it. Tama has always delivered, I am wondering now if I shouldn’t have done the Tamas? Well, I love my Pearls, but I have always loved Tama drums and this video got me excited about them.

My local store is Musos Corner in Newcastle Australia, these guys have looked after me since I began my musical journey a little over 15 years ago now. They have the same vibe, and same enthusiasm for the products that you guys do, and I can’t recommend supporting the small/mom and pop businesses enough, these are the heartbeat of any economy, of any industry. Big stores lose that personal touch, but when I go to Musos I know I’m always going to get the rundown on some new piece of gear that they know will probably interest me! Keep up the great work and bringing this energy to the internet. I always love looking for Tama related content and you guys are always the first I’ll go to!

My first semi-real kit as a teenager was a Pearl Export, and they hold a special place in my heart, but there's just something about Tara. The choices they make in finish, hardware, and all the rest. Tama is my Japanese jam. I have a relatively low priced Chinese made Tama Metalworks Steel 6.5x14 Special Edition with black hardware and black die cast rims, and the quality in the build and finish of this drum rivals drums 5X the price. Bravo Tama and Bravo Shane!

It always astonishes me how there are so many discussions about drums resonating and how wonderful they can ring out, but then to observe so many drummers never lift their foot pedal when striking their bass drum. Holding the beater to the head doesn't allow the bass drum to fully ring out its sound.

Great documentary! (Random question: Years ago at NAMM, Tama had a dark green sparkle lacquer called something like "Tunisian Sky" or "Desert" or something like that. Does anyone at DCP or here on KZbin happen to remember the name? It was a great example of the creativity of Tama's finish team.) Really interesting that the Star series gets Remos. Perhaps they sound more open than G1s.
@richboshart12014 ай бұрын
As for Remo, the nonsense about Remo heads sounding better on Star drums is just that - nonsense. Tama’s decision to use Remo is done for business reasons, not sonic ones. Stop deceiving us Tama, you’re better than that. I have two Star kits and nine Star/Star Reserve snares. My Evans sound great on those drums, and better than the stock Remo’s to my ears. If you prefer Remo, that’s what will sound and feel better to you. If you prefer another brand, those will still sound best.
