I would like to try one of these things. I have a kit I built out of practice pads on snare stands as well as mounted on cymbal stands that I practice on a lot, this might be better though, not sure.

Why this over a low-end e-kit?

In terms of response and feel, I would say this is probably closer to the real thing even most high end e-kits would be, as e-kit mesh heads generally have much more rebound than normal plastic heads. But it depends what your priorities are - whether you want something that's closer to the feel of the real thing, or closer the sound of the real thing.
