Coconut crabs are very slow, and pretty stupid. They're essentially oversized hermit crabs. Sure, he could give a honey badger one hell of a pinch if he got ahold of it, but it wouldn't know to snap its neck. It's a scavenger and a coconut eater. It doesn't really have a killer instinct. Assuming the honey badger could break through its shell, which shouldn't be a problem since they eat bone, it should be no contest.

I have my own theory if you are interested in opposing ideas, albeit the thoughts are scattered. I am making a few theories because of this song. Tamatoa brings up Maui giving him 'credit for my start' as if Maui and him were fairly acquainted, they in fact met when Mauwei was singing 'You're Welcome' he has a tattoo on his shoulder blade of him fighting Tamatoa. Mauwei has his fishhook and Tamatoa doesn't appear to have lost his leg... yet. The aftermath most likely lead to Tamatoa losing his leg. He also may have possibly damaged one of his eyes since its always dialated. Back to Tamatoa singing. He mentions being 'a drab little crab once' and back to the battle it appears as though he hasn't started collecting gold on his shell yet. The reason why he started might have been to take after Mauwei, since he was defeated by him (mockery is the highest form of flattery) this leading to an obsession and madness, implying Tamatoa wasn't always as crazed. Once Tamatoa realizes Mauwei doesn't remember how to use his hook he focuses on him, discarding Moana in a bone cage. Tamatoa treats Mauwei like a ragdoll, tossing him about. He closes the roof of his shell and glows, now thrashing Mauwei much worse. At one point he flings him against the wall face first and sweeps his hair to the side revealing a tattoo of Mauwei being dumped in the ocean by his human mother. Tamatoa knew exactly where the tattoo was oddly, and precisely what happened and why Mauwei does what he does for humanity. This would imply at some point Tamatoa got a good view of Mauwei's tattoos. Now this is how I wrap up things. Near the end of his song Tamatoa speaks French saying 'C'est la vie mon ami' translating to 'that's life friend' the fact Tamatoa used those exact words when referring to Mauwei implies that the two might have been friends at one point, until the fight. Going even farther back before Tamatoa begins singing he talks to Moana, going after her necklace she defends it saying it was given to her by her grandma. Tamatoa replies by saying in a joking manner 'I ate my grandma and it took a week because she was absolutely humongous' to which horrifies Moana. Obviously Tamatoa wasn't always as big, or his grandma might have just been very large. It could be out of just wanting to have Tamatoa live in a giant shell or, that could be the only thing Tamatoa didn't eat. It also might imply Tamatoa is a cross breed of Coconut and Hermit crab, given the shell type. The reason for Tamatoa eating his grandma might be just because he's a coconut crab. Or she might have been a preeminent entity and he wanted her title believing eating her, he could could take her title. As seen on Mauwei's tattoos Tamatoa looks much smaller, Mauwei about the size of his claw, Tamatoa doesn't seem to be instantly attacking in the image either. So Mauwei might have fought Tamatoa for eating his grandma who might have been an important entity, Tamatoa needing to be punished for his crime. Mauwei defeated him but couldn't finish the job and kill his old friend, instead cutting off one of Tamatoa's legs and presenting it to the God's to show he had 'killed' Tamatoa. Though Tamatoa just feels bitter towards Mauwei in turn. When Mauwei steals the heart of Tefiti and is banished. His hook ends up in the possession of Tamatoa, he puts the hook on the center of his shell as if it's his fondest memory. Overall this was just to say Mauwei and Tamatoa could have likely been friends at one point.

So I've been thinking about the Heart of Tefiti and what is its power exactly. I have this theory that the reason Moanas grandma lived for so long because IT IS LITERALLY THE KEY TO ETERNAL LIFE. Think about it, she was perfectly healthy before handing Moana the stone. She was dancing up till she showed Moana the boats AND she didn't display physical problems till she had to literally sit down, AFTER GIVING MOANA THE STONE. I mean, isn't it odd that she just up and dies and is ill after this event? Even the village doctors didn't know how or why she was suddenly ill, Moanas dad looks puzzled when he sees Moana pick up his mother's cane! It would also make sense since that would be the main attribute to having the stone. Did you see Moana or Maui use the stone to create food or anything for that matter? IT'S A STONE THE LITERALLY GIVES LIFE. Also Moana doesn't get hurt at all, she is the main holder of this stone. Even being underwater for long periods of time doesn't effect her and even if the Ocean helps her, the ocean can't create air. Even Maui gets hurt, the Ocean splashes his face and you can hear him sputter. Moana practically gets water boarded with her own hair by the ocean as soon as her grandmother hands her the stone, and she isn't effected!

I HAVE A THEORY! I was thinking about who tamatoa could have been previously and I have a theory,, tamatoa was the chef from the little mermaid.I picked up on this when, during the song "shiney", tamatoa speaks french ("C'est la vie mon ami" meaning "it is life my friend") causing me to link him immediately to chef Louis. the more you think about it, the more links appear: in the little mermaid, the chef sings about cooking and eating fish, as tamatoa does in moana and at the end of the credits tamatoa mentions how they would help Sebastian, and it would make sence that the chef would have been jelous of the success Sebastian has when he chased the clam, meaning if/when the chef died he would want to be a clam. Lines in the song "shiney" all point in a simular direction, saying how he loves sea food and free food (which to be fair the majority of us do) but being a crab he wouldn't know any other type of food. Tamatoa would also be a hoarder of shiney gold because, working for royalty would mean that the chef would be surrounded by expensive valuables but they were not actually his as we see shelfs of trophy looking goblets in Louis' kitchen,and tamatoa directly translates to trophey, it is likely that Louis was jelous of the money the royals had. Lastly something that appeared to me is that in the little mermaid, (as pointed out in this video) the only thing spider crabs eat other than humans is other crabs and chef Louis prepares and eats none other than stuffed crab. So that's my own personal theory,, has anyone else got any other theories or things to back this up?

How would I defend against an invasion of coconut crabs? Let's see; they're giant crabs. I like crabmeat, and they're slow as heck. Barbecue tongs, melted butter, and my biggest stewpot on the boil, that's how~ XD And for those who doubt that a coconut crab could fit into a pot, I've got one I use to simmer turkey carcasses after Thanksgiving to make soup. Coconut crabs arent that bad actually, its fun to poke them with sticks and nudge them with your feet. On the island of Guam what you have to worry about is the Brown Tree Snakes, and the toads, and the king's grass

Its a breed of grass that is in the mixed grass yards of the military base, its nearly impossible to mow and keep inside the restricted 2.5 inch limit. It grew so fast, and was insanely sharp, made it impossible to walk around barefoot. I don't know if that was the actual breed of grass, but that is what it was called on the island.

Tamatoa turns out to be Scuttle. I'm calling it. In the post-credit scene, Tamatoa says: "If my name was Sebastian and I had a cool Jamaican accent, you'd totally help me!" So, obviously Moana and the Little Mermaid take place at around the same time. You know who else has a knack for human treasure? Scuttle, from the Little Mermaid. You know what he inspects?!?! A FORK! (Or, as he calls it, an dinglehopper). Coconut crabs steal forks. It only makes sense. And it's highly likely that Scuttle could be younger than Sebastian. After all, Sebastian seems much older and much more mature. Also: Scuttle recognizes Ursula in the mirror during the Little Mermaid scene when Vanessa is about to marry Erik. Scuttle is a bird.
