i laughed not because of Tamblot (who btw... that name brings back memories from childhood) being trans, but because a revolt being led by a trans babaylan is one of those moments that makes me think and feel "oh yes, that there is definitely a very Filipino moment right there. Made in the Philippines." That sorta thing isn't something I hear as often from other places as I do from the Philippines We've long had this sort of kindness to letting such types of ppl live out their lives, something that has frequently intrigued and fascinated me abt the attitude of our ancestors on gender (I mean despite various societal problems rn there's a reason we're usually ranked as the most gender equal country in Asia.... (at least with the traditional male and female) and I'm willing to bet we're better at it than even the USA lmao) Also, ngl but despite being (non-aligned and extremely non-religious) Christian, I would've rooted for Tamblot anyway, I hate the cultural amnesia the Spaniards have cursed us on XD

Tamblot is a male babaylan yes.. in the old visayan time male babaylan are known as isog.. basically means males that are acting more like females. If you really want an equivalent of them in today's time. In my opinion tamblot is considered more of a gay man, than a trans. Even the depiction of him during the revolt is him wearing the male babaylan clothes. He is not cross dressing.

Some colonial sources explain that the diwata also promised to grant the Boholanos a joyous future in exchange for their servitude to and construction of a shrine dedicated to the deity in question, apart from their departure from Spain's religion and authority. Alcarazo subsequently assembled his troops consisting of Spanish and Philippine soldiers then traveled to Bohol, leading the others through the thick, mountainous forests inland in pursuit of the rebels. The enemy forces eventually met, and a downpour of rain befell the battle scene. Tamblot and the other Boholanos interpreted the rainfall as the act of their diwata, whom they believed was sabotaging Alcarazo's troops and their weapons. However, his soldiers managed to push them back and cause them to retreat. Afterwards, the alcalde-mayor eventually quashed the revolt, killing and capturing many of its insurgents. Bakla are socially and economically integrated into Filipino society, having been accepted by society prior to Western colonization, many of which were held in high regard and performed the role of spiritual leaders known as babaylan, katalonan, and other shamans in pre-colonial Philippines. However, a minority group of Filipinos disapprove or reject the baklas, usually on religious grounds. The stereotype of a baklâ is a parlorista-a flamboyant, camp cross-dresser who works in a beauty salon; in reality, the bakla thrives in numerous sectors of society, from the lower to the upper levels.[7][8][9] Asog shamans were leaders of several revolts against Spanish rule from the 17th century to the 18th century. Oh lord the denial of people indoctrinated by Christianity in the comments is appalling. Different tribes back then were always more progressive (and accepting of the local LGBTQ) until colonization destroyed local cultures that they're having revivalists only recently. The destroying of cultures wasn't only in the Philippines and Africa, this includes Latin America as well. They have similar indigenous roots as us, with similar cultural patterns and the promotion of Western Christianity helped almost eradicate all that (blending Catholicism with local beliefs). Also if you need sources, there's usually a lot in university libraries and online journals but some of them are hidden behind a paywall.

Every morning and evening I burn incense and give offerings to my Bisayan and Ilokano ancestors along with prayers for guidance; Tamblot’s revolt was not a total failure lol. And I like how the Tamblot revolt is another example of Spanish colonial military being unable to function or complete any objectives without Indio auxiliary assistance. I think this is shifting the definition of trans-gender a bit too much. For one, you don't ritually become a transgender as you ritually become Bayugin. You were always a man but were born in a female body, for lack of a better phrase, "male brain in female body" this is different from going through a process to become a Bayugin as a man. Also, your stuff with pronouns, I have nothing to indicate something like that would have actually happened. Yes, pronouns don't exist and yes, they were counted as among the women in social but would have still been recognized as male even if as a priestess, a male priestess.
