90% of the time when people are "recreating" the tame impala drum sound it's not even close. Even that reverb video didn't come anywhere near the tame impala drum sound, the snare wasn't even close. Your sir, are incredible. Other than the crash sounding slightly different, this sounds EXACTLY like lonerism. Props to your astounding attention to detail! 👏

Thank you, means a lot! My new theory is that Kev was using a different model ride cymbal, hence why it’s like 90% similar sounding but not quite the same!

@@redconvertiblerecording Ah, I see. What do you think he used? An equipboard submission claims he uses a "Zildjian 22" K Constantinople Renaissance Ride" and says: "Many people assume that this is the medium thin low model... but if you listen to the frequency comparison... you quickly realize it sounds nothing like a medium thin low ride... or even a high version. When comparing to any 22" renaissance ride video, to the video provided (at 0:45 seconds in) It lines up exactly with the frequency pitch of what a renaissance sounds like. Just because they look the same, does not mean they sound the same. Kevin actually does not even own a Medium Thin Low... but it does share the K Con line." Also wondering what hihats those are. Equipboard verified a submission that Kevin uses new beats but i don't see how they could tell from the lonerism ep 3 vid. (no logos)

@@JSRMedia I've been meaning to create an equipboard account just to reply to that post regarding the Lonerism cymbal. First off that post is really quite hilarious- to say that the cymbals are "nothing alike' is silly to say the least. The medium thin low and renaissance are really really similar sounding. And in general, all of the Constantinople cymbals of the even the same exact model sound different from one another. The Constantinople line is just extremely variable in sound, so you have to hear the exact cymbal you're buying before you buy it because it's not guaranteed to sound the same as others you'll hear on the internet. With that said, I've watched well over a dozen videos of the Renaissance ride and I only heard one that truly sounded like Lonerism- specifically the cymbal sound on 'Keep on Lying'. The 'ping' of the ride sounds just like that song, but the crash didn't sound too much like any song on Lonerism, which shows the extreme variability of the K Constantinople cymbal line in general.

@@JSRMedia Oh and regarding the hi hats- they are indeed old New Beats. I guess any zildjian cymbal from the 60s are considered New Beats, but similar to the Zildjian Constantinople line, not all New Beats sound the same. I've had 3-4 pairs of 60s New Beats through out my drumming career and only the pair I'm using in this video sound like the hats on Lonerism. I was in a drum shop in Brooklyn looking to buy a vintage ride cymbal, but the clerk showed me a pair of 60s hi hats he had and upon playing them I heard that pingy overtone sound you hear listening to tracks like Cause I'm a Man, New Person Same Old Mistakes, etc. As soon as I heard that those hi hats could make that sound, I bought them. They've since been on every drum track I've recorded for the last 3-4 years. If you're looking for a similar hat sound, I recommend only buying cymbals that you can listen to before you buy, especially if you're really trying to find a cymbal that sounds exactly like kevs. hope this helps!

@@redconvertiblerecording Thanks dude that's great info! And fascinating. New Person Same Old mistakes has my favorite hi-hat sound ever and it kinda sold me on the idea of new beats. The kick and snare sounded amazing too of course. I'm in the market for new beats but I'm not too concerned about it sounding exactly like Kevin's so I think I'll probably get a pair 60/70s era online. Maybe one day I'll get the itch for a pair that sounds just like Kevin's.

Dude I've come back to this video so much times it's by far the most accurate cover by playing and production, I've been trying to get a snare sound similar to Lonerism's for a while now and was wondering how you tuned it and what you did on the production side of things. I find when I've tried to get this drum sound before I've never found the perfect balance of saturation like you have here, any advice would be greatly appreciated

@redconvertiblerecording
@redconvertiblerecording 3 жыл бұрын
I was never able to figure out which synths were used on this one either. It’s not the Juno or the Pro One. He had an Akai MIDI Controller during Lonerism, so it could be a soft synth from ableton or a third party one.
@thejamdude1234
@thejamdude1234 3 жыл бұрын
I managed to get a very similar sound to the soft pad kevin uses in this song and apocalypse dreams using the Arturia Farfisa V VST. its a vst based on a farfisa which is like a combo between an organ and a synth. I'm not 100% sure if its what kevin actually uses but if you add some compression and saturation onto it in ableton it sounds very, very similar. There's a cover of apocalypse dreams on my channel, its not great but if you want to check what the pad sounds like then skip to 1:49 on my vid. Hope this helps. Another thing is if you check out this session they did kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3SrmqN-qKpmaqc at 1:15 you can see a midi keyboard that jay is playing, that's why im presuming that its a VST plugin that they used.

Pasting my comment from my other Tame cover below: It's a 22" Zildjian Constantinople Medium Thin Low Ride cymbal. The Constantinople rides vary greatly in sound unfortunately, so it was a bit tricky to find one that had that distinct Lonerism chime to it. If you look online, you'll hear that the sound of these cymbals varies drastically between one cymbal to another. I think I spent a few months searching online until I found a company in Massachusetts that had 5-6 in stock and clips on KZbin for each specific Constantinople cymbal they had in stock. Looking back at the receipt from 2013, I ended up choosing one that weighed 2387 grams- which I believe is a bit on the lighter side in terms of weight.
