I did not understand most of this dialogue but kind of noted one point, that Sanskrit has no written script. I will call this statement wrong because Rig Ved was written in Sanskrit which is the oldest written literature in Asia. This is a fact. And the oldest tamil literature is tolkapiyam which was a 5 CBE much after Rig Ved. Then how is this a valid point, Also in Tamil Nadu in all temples all prayers are offered in Sanskrit mantra. Then how is your culture separate from the rest of India. And finally , I don’t understand why is there a constant compulsion for tamillains to prove to others that their language/culture is more evolved than others. To be honest, no one actually needs such debate. Please let me know because as an Indian I want to know why tamil people think they are different than the rest of the country.

Mentioning a random timeline and using the phrase ' this is a fact' mean nothing when not backed by any evidence. Tamil was the language in which temple procedures were conducted. Over time as kings favoring sanskrit took over, Tamil was removed. Tamilnadu is well on its recovery phase in that regard. Temples and its procedures are anyways trivial as there is nothing real about it from a background perspective. There are Tamil literature which do not use the word god or religion. You seem to be misguided by pro hinthutva propaganda. You are not alone. Like any other culture, Tamil culture is unique in its own way. Nobody is claiming superiority. However, when fake news undermines Tamil culture, we will not keep quiet.

We do not form an opinion simply because someone else have a contradictory opinion. Google is not and will never be a reliable source for such information. To make it clear, the person who is answering the questions in this video is a linguistic researcher well versed in 6 languages including sanskrit. Hindu is a collective name formed for administrative purposes integrating multiple faith systems. India is a union of 562 princely states (each were regarded as a standalone country). 562 provinces came together to form an union called India. Tamils and Tamilnadu are part of that union and we have never questioned our faith towards the Indian constitution. Within a democracy nobody or no non-living entity is above the constitution. Tamils are questioning the fairness of the union now. This is because BJP-ruled states get twice the vaccines than Tamilnadu. Tamilnadu is one of the Top-3 tax contributors in the country. However Up gets 19% of the total funds (tax devolution) but Tamilnadu is not even getting its share of GST which is the agreement on which Tamilnadu supported and signed up for GST. If one state is not getting equitable access to funds and also not getting its rightful share of GST, the natural consequence is its people, Tamils here, questioning the purpose of continuing to be in such an unnatural union. Tamils like many others across the nation have nothing to do with anything hindu. There were and are many faith systems here. Religion is man-made entity and never can it serve as the fundamental basis for categorizing people. People existed, Their languages evolved and so did their faith systems. They wrote down their faith practices in their respective languages. People can pray to any god anytime they want and religion is a personal thing and varies with time. Language doesn't. We Tamils have literature such as Thirukural which does not use the word religion or god. It also teaches us that all life forms are equal by birth. The problem of answering question whether Sanskrit is a dead language or not; is that when you tell people Sanskrit is dead, they seem to get very offended. This is because people feel an innate sense of attachment to this most ancient and "sacred" language. Sanskrit is the mother of all North Indian languages and by extension the "surrogate" mother of South Indian languages too, where she has given much adornment. It is however true that even Vedic Sanskrit (oldest form) has had to borrow, both out of necessity and choice from Dravidian for: vocabulary, syntax and phonemes, most notably the retroflex; that hallmark of the "Indian accent" itself! Strictly speaking though, the borrowings have been in both directions, i.e., Indo-Aryan to Dravidian and vice versa. Understandably perhaps, the people who most feel "robbed" at the notion of a dead Sanskrit are: the North Indians in general and the Brahmins in particular. Because these groups feel an unbroken link between their cultural heritage and Mother Sanskrit, both through history and politicized rhetoric. What of the language itself? Most languages have at least 2 dialects, a high dialect of the king, court, scholars etc and a low dialect of the masses beneath them. This appears to have been true too in ancient Northern India where Sanskrit was the high dialect and Prakrits (plural) were the low dialects. The word Sanskrit is in itself not a name but rather it means "refined speech" and this is therefore consistent with the notion of Sanskrit having been the high dialect or the gold standard! Why did they need a gold standard at all? Ancient Northern India was a cacophony of several distinct but mutually intelligible Indo-Aryan dialects ranging from the western Pakistani border with Iran to the most eastern borders of Bangladesh. That terrain was so vast and in places impassable. This local separation gave rise to so many isolated Aryan communities diverged in speech but, essentially, still of the same "stock". These diverged speeches (dialects) were the Prakrits that later developed into the North Indian languages today. These diverged communities needed a lingua franca (link language) that everyone could agree on and be good enough for scholarly and court use for: communication, scholarship, poetry, royal edicts, etc, . What better language for the job than Sanskrit? This point leads us to our next deduction that Sanskrit itself may have only ever been a strict, formal and scholarly language, probably from the period of the Rig Veda. In other words it is entirely possible that even during early Vedic times people spoke Prakrit at home while they composed poetry in Sanskrit as it was even then, only the gold standard and perhaps not the spoken vernacular! It is highly probable that Sanskrit, that "refined speech" or gold standard, itself arose as a reaction to the changes in the early Indo-Ayran language that was brought on by the entry of the Dravidian substratum into Sanskrit itself. The Aryans would have naturally acted to preserve and protect their language from what they would have logically seen as linguistic "corruption" coming from Dravidian and other sources. It is entirely plausible that a formal and resilient language was deliberately solidified in order to stem the flow of this linguistic change. And this is probably how Sanskrit came to be sanctified and treated with so much reverence and care, leaving its very important religious significances aside for a moment. The flip side to this was that the Prakrit on the other hand, had the freedom and waywardness to adapt and to adopt as they pleased in varying degrees, that has netted in so many North Indian languages today. The people gave the Prakrit a freehand because they knew that Sanskrit the gold standard was always going to be there to fall back on, albeit frozen in time forever. And so all scholarly works were composed in Sanskrit, which was easily understood or easily translated to Prakrit, as opposed to writing in one of many Prakrit which would then need to be translated several times into others! Spoken Sanskrit the common speech, the one between: mother and baby, husband and wife, playmates and friends, shopkeeper and customer, lovers and loathers, driver and the driven is all but dead! And it is well and truly dead. All the arduous attempts made to revive it, at best, have only ever been able to quote preexisting prose and poetry. Granted, some beautiful words and phrases have been coined in modern times along with a lot of continuous writing and print work, as you would expect, but again predominantly these have been no more than esoteric material and a far cry from being able to make the language common currency again. Admirably, there’s a lot of scholarship and a lot of scholars and often times, due to their personal biases and loyalties, they refuse to believe that it’s dead and are in denial about it. The denial, however, does not bring back the language! When a language is described as “dead”, that is only so in the linguistic sense and it does not mean that it’s dead to the world in the everyday sense of the word - dead. This distinction, alas, is lost on the common people. They just don’t get it. Their understanding is more along the lines of Sanskrit having been killed and entombed, in the real sense! Invariably, this leads to the conclusion that it has been “killed off” for perhaps a political reason and maybe in an attempt to appease one group or another. This understanding is totally wrong and is counter productive. It is dead in the sense that it is not spoken by a native population as their sole mother tongue. The mother tongue definition, however, does not include people being able to speak it as a second language even if it’s with “native speaker” fluency. Other great languages of the world such as: Latin, Ancient Greek, Ancient Hebrew, Hittite, etc. are all dead in the same linguistic sense. But “death” does not inhibit these languages, including Sanskrit, from being used and enjoyed as great literary languages in perpetuity. Sanskrit is dead but not entombed.

Please note, brahmin is a caste identity and Tamil is the identity of those who speak Tamil (natively). Holding up sanskrit happens only when the need is to uphold the brahmin caste identity. There are kannada speaking brahmins, marathi speaking brahmins and so on. They are kannadigas and marathis first and then whatever caste they might claim to be. Caste identity is manmade for political purposes. Mother tongue represents language that evolved as a consequence of the need to communicate with each other and therefore the mother tongue represents the true identity of anyone. Sanskrit is not a language at all. There is no native population that speaks Sanskrit, native territory & script! Medium of instruction to learn Sanskrit is in other languages. You can't conduct Sanskrit leaning in Sanskrit language! 24800 Speakers of Sanskrit recorded their mother tongue as Kannada in Indian census! How could they be native speakers when they opt to record Kannada in census as mother tongue? What are you talking? Tamil can operate without Sanskrit.

@3:25 assumption about Sanskrit - they did not degrade tamil . They are very much aware that tamil is equally the oldest language along with Sanskrit . They are like parents to the world languages . The propaganda was against the aryan invasion theory . Not against tamil. Now it’s proven that India as a whole had a unique and exceptional civilization and is considered as the cradle of civilization. This propaganda in the name of aryan invasion is to divide Indians and convert them to Christianity by missionaries. Both are equally great and old . My opinion is stop fighting over this . As if there isn’t any thing to fight for . Do not bring more causes for division. We have to unite as Indians . I’m only for Tamil and Sanskrit as the National language for India (if they plan to have National language) . I love all languages and each has its uniqueness. Bojpuri language I never relinquished much but after Lagan movie song “ ... Radha key jale ...” It literally took me to the days of Radha and Krishna . Who spoke at that time some othe language closer to Sanskrit but local . Certainly not bojpuri. But I loved that song sung closer to that . Enjoying that language instead of fighting brings peace . Now try to accept both Sanskrit and tamil as the oldest language and try to understand in a correct way why they (central government) were in a position to say that Sanskrit as oldest language . They were comparing with all other languages in the world EXCEPT TAMIL . They are well aware of the existence of Tamil . Only thing I’m don’t like what the central is doing is not including southern history in history books . If they don’t t include southern history what south India has to do is publish separate history text book only about South Indian history and passively protest .

Your intention is clear. You don't want to accept the fact that Tamil is older than sanskrit, as explained by the experts above. You still carry forward that both languages are same aged without letting down sanskrit and without accepting Tamil is the oldest as it had script, people lived contemporarily, whereas sanskrit had no script when Tamil had script and Tamil speaking people. All these years in the past Tamil had been suppressed by sanskrit chavinists. Disgusting.

Mr. Chidambaram and et al, sorry my intentions are absolutely not what you think. If you happen to be a tamilian and that to believer of God try reading 63 nayanmars stories, pattinathar stories, kambar , kannadasan sir’s arthamulla Hindu madham etc… Nothing !!! Believe me NOTHING IS STABLE!!! There was once a land called Kumari kandam, there were once great kings and people (including Tamil kings) who lived on this earth …. All gone …. So is our life …. I clearly mentioned in my above comment DONT fight over trivial things and separate yourselves from the rest . We tamilians have history and that’s what we have to establish to north people. Not fighting and separating yourselves. Be practical …. In few years maybe 50 or less, scientists say, but let’s give it 100 years , borders near coastal regions are going to shrink by atleast 5- 15% . We all have to move inwards and mingle more. Now where will we have a “unique” identity as “tamilians” or the pride? Remember pride comes before fall. Don’t fight , have a clear and sensible thoughts. Spread positivity, spread love,….
