I see that Chip doesn't really like to be pet, and thats similar to my 2 gerbils. They take food from my hands, they come up to me, the crawl around on my hands, but when i want to pet them they try to get way and look up at me like "what are you doing!?"

Aww gerbils are so cheeky sometimes hehe! Chip is actually very good, he quite enjoys being pet, especially when he's sat on the perches at the front of his cage, he chooses when he wants to be pet, and he is also very good at being held. When I let him have playtime in a large area, I play with him by chasing after him with my hands and throwing ping pong balls which is what you see in the video. If I had called his name, he would of come to me straight away and climbed onto my leg. Tee (when he was alive) was very much like your gerbils, and was never too keen on being pet and held, he much preferred just taking treats and running around rather than being held. Gerbils are very clever pets, but not too cuddly like guinea pigs or rabbits are, but I just love how active and fun they are :D xx

You have clearly become infected with gerbilitis, this won't be painful but will display similar effects to that of spider man when he was bitten by a spider... However as you've guessed, you will not gain the abilities to climb tall buildings and shoot webs, instead you will become dependant on nuts, will grow two very large front teeth and a furry tail... my thoughts are with you... xD

Chip is so cute! I have two gerbils, one runs away from me but likes to be touched when held and the other one is attached to me at the hip. She squeaks for attention and affection and I have a bonding scarf because she is so attached. I never have to bother her, she lets me know when she wants affection, which is any time she isn't asleep!

I’m a Chicken nugget leave your hand in with a treat on it, try it every now and then until they stay on their hand while eating it. Also, make sure you wash your hands before attempting to handle them, so they don’t think your hands are food!

+Advantia It's hard to know exactly what to do, but I would personally try starting from scratch again and follow some of my tips and hopefully that should help you out. I found being able to sit with them in a gerbil proofed room or playpen was the best way to tame them, they felt really comfortable around me and I would put treats in my hand to encourage them to climb on me and feel safe x

Make sure to watch your gerbil with that cage because it’s nails/feet could get stuck in the wire and it can break its leg

My gerbils bite when I stick my hand into their cage, I never scare them or something I try to be as slow as possible so they don't get scared. But then they first nibble and then bite for no reason. They have a big cage and enough to chew on what am I doing wrong? Im pretty scared to stick my hand in their cage since they always bite. Also how long does it take to tame a gerbil? Mical - make sure to always wash your hands before petting them, so your hands don’t smell like food. If they still bite, try wearing gloves? I’m not so sure on that though.

I need some help... Here's my problem, my gerbil does not live with me so I can not be with him 24/7, but I'm with him a lot for the most part. But I also don't think the pet store treated him right. He is almost literally a wild gerbil really. He used to only be picked up by his tail and he was never played with. I also do not have a playpen or a small enclosed space to play with him. You also can't pick him up without him biting you or jumping out of your hand. He has been completely, alone basically, for almost 2 years. I want his trust so my mom will let me take him home. Please help!

Wash your hands before handling, so they don’t smell like food. He doesn’t hate you, he’s just scared and curious. Another point is that if he is a lone gerbil, he may just be depressed. Gerbils love to be in pairs or groups, but it is very hard to introduce a partner without them fighting. How old is he? If he’s only a few months it won’t be that hard to introduce a new one but I can’t advise you, talk to your parents or see an expert.

Please help! So I was young and inexperienced (probably still am) and did all the things I shouldn't have done! I grabbed my gerbil by the tail to get them out, and I bathe it in water! Every time I try to touch him he backs away. He eats out of my hand though. That's the only good thing. I have had him for about a year and a half. I feel like such a bad owner. What can I do?

Hello :) It's really difficult when you realise you've done things wrong with pet care, but I can honestly say that we do all make mistakes! The important thing is that we learn from those mistakes to make things better, I personally think it's shown how much of a responsible pet owner you are to have admitted to these mistakes and the fact that you have not only done that but also openly asked for advice is really admirable! I would suggest to continue researching as you have been doing, watch lots of KZbin videos, read websites and forums about gerbil care and keep improving with your knowledge in whats best with your gerbil. I would suggest just simply starting over with your gerbil, almost as if you have only just got him, take your time with him, hand feed him as often as possible, put him in a playpen and play with him etc. He will begin to trust you but it will take some time, just don't give up! Also definitely don't call yourself a bad pet owner, the best pet owners are those who make mistakes but who are willing to admit to those mistakes and correct them, I can see how much you care about your gerbil and how much you are wanting to improve. I hope that has helped you out a little x

I’m gonna get some in a week or two! Here’s a tip: Get at least two gerbils of the same gender, or the lone gerbil may be depressed. They won’t live as long and they will be less friendly. It’s better to do a lot of research before getting a pet!

So ive got a very small young gerbil. My issue is, hell come to my hand, but rather than sniff or crawl in it, he immediately bites or nibbles. I always have clean, non food smelling hands, so there should be nothing he may think is food. Any way to get him to not do so, and hes also very skittish.

I have a gerbil that's older and has a history of fighting and had injuries. I wanted to get her a friend so I got two new gerbils. I put them together and she went straight forward and attacked them. They are separated now and their cages are right next to eachother but I'm afraid to put them together again. What should I do?

You can't just put adult gerbils together like that who don't know each other, or they WILL fight. It's not her fault--it's their natural behavior in the wild (they live in colonies, like meerkats). To introduce them, you need to use the "split-tank technique". Look that up and you will see all the instructions.

Just spend as much time as you can with them! I definitely found that offering their favourite treats and spending time sitting with them while they are running around in a gerbil proofed room or in an empty bath really helps! xx

I'm probably quite late to this video, but I'll still comment anyways. In the UK, there isn't that many available 'Recommended sized cages' so I went with some cage with BARS, I know lots of places say you shouldn't have bars due to bar chewing, but it was the only option I had.. I only recently got my gerbils, 2 to be exact, but I'm slightly worried to put my hand near them as I don't want them to be frightened of me or bite me. I usually sit with them for around 3-4 hours, leave them to nap then come and see them again. Do you think if I put my hand in the cage their first instinct would be to bite me or? I'm just curious as I'm honestly petrified of the thought of being bitten. Silly, I know but I'm not good with pain 😂. Hope someone sees this! Oh and side note - are plastic wheels okay? As that's the only wheels I can find x

Hey, I'm 13 and I'm wondering if gerbils are entertaining? I used to have hamsters and they really made me bored because they were nocturnal and they never wanted to play in the day!

Hello :) Yes they are definitely entertaining, more so than hamsters in my opinion. They are not nocturnal or diurnal, they are a bit of both and take short naps throughout the night and day, meaning that they are active most of the time! They are extremely playful and love to climb and it's fun to watch them burrow and see their tunnels form in the tank. They are also quite clever, it's easy to teach them things like to walk onto your hand or jump out of the cage on to your lap and so on. Personally I think they are great pets, they are also less smellier than hamsters! x

iirenic if the gerbils don’t draw blood when they bite, they may just be testing to see if you are a snack. make sure you wash your hands before you handle them so they don’t taste like food.
