I did it in my old Mazda 626 sedan. Made no difference except increase the weight of the car by quite a bit.

Proud owner of ex Airforce Mog U1700 L CX (custom extended wheelbase) originally stationed at Woomera In South Australia, which coincidentally, is my birthplace and home. Purchased in 2020, the Mog was never removed from site to Auction holding yard, just literally arrived on my doorstep !!. Mine is an 8x8 traytop crewcab, air cooled 12 litre Mercedes engine,8 speed AMT gearbox, aircon with 3 ton Hiab crane mount on the rear tray. Mine came with 'bonus features' like sand tyres plus four spares mounted upright on the tray headboard, 200 litre poly water tank, 800 litres diesel tanks, remote inflation/deflation of tyres, extensive tooling and lifting equipment in containment, front and rear hydraulic winches, extensive led lightbars, the list is extensive. A highly developed specific package for extreme desert operations. Though thick rubber matting was installed ex factory, it had deteriorated, interior was gutted, all coating laser removed, and a oxygen activated acoustic absorption lining applied at a thickness of 3mm but expands once oxygen absorption has occurred, during at approximately 5mm thickness once cured. The lining can either be covered or remain exposed with no degregation. The difference is amazing, the cab becoming 'acoustically dead', much like a recording studio. The product is an industrial polyurethane which is applied hot but due to its ability to absorb oxygen, must be applied with supplied air. Extreme ? Yes !! But the results are permanent. Be aware that the sheeting you are applying is notorious for surface separation in extreme heat conditions due to adhesive failure. All the best with your Mog. Look forward to your mods. I’ve done it in my v8 muscle car made a big difference to in cab road noise and heat transfer via the transmission hump floor and roof.! Will be installing it again to my nissan patrol but maybe a combination of sound/heat shield on transmission hump and roof with spray on rhino lining on other areas etc.! 👍

Also unrelated, ensure that hatch is securely latched its heavy and can be dangerous if not secured correctly when driving over rough terrain, witnessed it first hand. Always check it’s locked in correctly.! 👍

The Army engineers invented a neat trick for the steering. They disconnected the wheel and universal joint and then made a bracket they could attach it to up at the hatch. Can then steer the Mog from the hatch. Need two to drive though. One to steer and one to operate all the pedals. Would be trippy to try out. I did that sound proof/heat proofing on my Mog. Works a treat. I also had my upholsterer to sew some high end tightly woven carpet backed by closed cell roofing insulation and then backing to make a second sound proof lay over the floor, firewall and walls of the cab. I pulled edge mold off and created my own edge mold out of 1.2 alloy. Folded them up and curved to suit Held down with rivnuts. Works a treat.

When I was restoring my Gen 1 Pajero I couldn't source nor afford to import dynamat. So I went down to the hardware store and got a few rolls of gutter seal which has a bituminous type sticky backing in a silver aluminium foil. It comes in different widths. I also got a couple of sheets of 1/2" HVAC insulation called armaflex. It made a huge difference. I used the armaflex on the roof and fire wall on the inside before I replaced the original rubber mat and new carpets. Was quite chuffed with the results.

Hi there again and just a tip on laminating fibreglass. Use a brush and when finished use the cheapest barsoap, cut a piece off and with water, rub the soap into the brush until you have a lather. Wash it off with water and you can use the brush again and again. great to see you progressing on your MOG. Cheers from S.A.

Looking good! To further help with sound deadening in the cab, use builders expanding foam inside all the cavities on the cab frame. will help massively too. keep it up!!

Gday guys, you,re probably not looking for recommendations but there’s a company called Styromax that make insulated panels that make perfect, easy and relatively cheap insulated panels that you could make a sweet cabin for the back of the Mog! Loving the build though, great idea for a camper!

All Unimogs are originally left hand drive hence the extra links to turn it into right hand drive for you Aussies. We used to get some Japanese vehicles in NA with something similar only the other way.

For such small holes, I'd use something like epoxy ribbon. It should easily fill this, and it's extremely strong.

Did you think about putting a layer of thermal matting in then the sound deadening stuff? Australia's pretty hot and the engine is right there in front and underneath you. Also the heat might mess with the sound matting without some kind of insulation between it. Just a thought.

The combination of fiberglass, ferrous metal and water is a bad one, it causes rust. Better to weld those holes. It not, plug them with rubber plugs.

Reckon you might be correct. I think new Mogs -at least some models- are built for both LH and RH drive; a shaft under the dash allows you to slide the wheel and pedals from one side to the other.

@Peter Alan Clark They will probably have some jerry can inside or on top of the camper, but if I were a bad guy, I would prefer to smash a side window, jump start the truck and use it to steal the fuel. :)
