The 12 gauge shotgun is such a marvel. A ball of wax malfunctioning is still a lethal projectile up to 20 yards away. Truly most versatile firearm.

I believe the prepper bingo card is a .22 rifle like a 10/22, a centerfire pistol like a glock 19, an AR-15 or some sort of centerfire semiauto rifle, and a 12-gauge shotty. I've got the first two checked off, and a shotty might be next ... someday ...

Alex Carter I agree. I also think a 22 revolver and some kind of gun that can reach out and touch. I'm thinking something like a 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger American. They're fairly cheap for what they are. You can find ammunition even during pandemics and other outlier events like this coronavirus thing.

Just this morning I tested a cutshell/waxslug out of an mossberg 835 which is overboard or I wouldn't have ran a cutshell/slug cuz I was scared over pressure issues. Since it is over bored the cut part of the shell actually acts as a sabo and the crimp keeps the slug safe from heat and wind. It was very accurate and punched through a refrigerator box stuffed with debris. The box was about 24 to 30 wide and it punched both sides. The back side showed signs of the slug fragments but was still smaller than a baseball. I am going g to run a few more and then make a video on my final product. I am hoping to get a wax slug on a pie plate at 50 yards reliably. I think I am pretty close. 10 of the slug variants I made today shot just fine at 30 yards and maintained a 4inch group ( not bad for a smoothie and some ditch craft). I am making some more today. I also shot several uncut waxers and to my surprise they were just as accurate even though the barrel is way too big for the slugs base diameter but they worked fine and held a 4in @ 27yards. The cut shells and the waxers both love to tumble. The diff is that the waxer holds together if you do good work. ( yeah, you can make a shitty waxer ) and the cutshells flip the contents of the shot cup out randomly, alot of times once it loses some load it goes of track cuz the imbalance and stuff. Waxers are definitely better than cutters. The only ditchcraft that is as cheap and effective is a combination of the two. If you don't have an over or back board barrel I cannot recommend a waxed cutter ( play at your own risk type shit). Happy new year 2021

I've done a lot of experimenting on wax for black powder lube. Toilet ring wax is really gooey but it is tough stuff, it doesn't go to hell in the heat it just gets stickier. Paraffin for canning is nice and clean and dries hard but is brittle. If you really want a tough wax, melt down some long lasting survival candles. That stuff will hold together for a wax slug I bet.

OK I got my Crosman red-skirted non-lead 16.7gr pellets, they're called "Red Flight" these days, and are product number LF22167. I tried pulling one of the red skirts off and this can be done with the fingers - it reveals a little "tail" on the metal part of the pellet which should actually make it fly a bit better than if it didn't have one. Interesting! I can only get green ramset blanks so far, but will keep looking around for brown or grey ones.

The wide range of results must be due to the difference in the distribution of pellets in the wax. Sometimes they might be more on one side, this would destroy accuracy if it has a spin. Smooth bore in this case may not always be as accurate but would be more consistent.

yeah, I agree. If the lead shot doesn't stack perfectly in the shell, you end up with weak voids AND it throws them out of balance.

I missed this one, making me late to the game. I think that shot cup wad combination has some promise using the longest shot cup that can be roll crimped in the shell, and enough filler wads are put in the base of the shot cup to limit the shot weight to one ounce or less. I would work up loads starting at 900 fps and increase the velocity until I found an exceptionally accurate load or the velocity the slug came at. I would also use larger shot. #2 shot to #4 Buck, depending on the location of its expected use. Shooting at an intruder inside the ho,e heavier shot at slower speeds would be much kinder to unprotected ears.

Solution to wax slugs - first, crayon wax is brittle so it's the last kind of wax you want to use. Another issue is that pellets or dust shot is being used to give it weight, which is good, except that they do nothing to preserve structural integrity and if anything, weaken it. Instead, I would suggest taking an approach similar to rebar reinforced cement or pykrete in that some sort of binder needs to be mixed with the wax - say a small, plastic mesh or fibers of some sort to help bind the whole thing together. I'm thinking maybe braided fishing line with split shot attached to it so you have both weight and a binding/reinforcing agent.
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 4 жыл бұрын
Crayon wax has worked perfectly. Any wax barely holds it together. If there are any voids (where the shot doesn't stack perfectly, it is a breaking point and also throws off the balance- which seems to be the issue with these.

"Shooth" bore??? I wonder if that blue machining/carving wax would hold up better than whatever wax was used on those test slugs.

What if you were to use something like jb weld epoxy instead of wax? Might it hold together better?!

I hate this kind censorship, guns aren't evil. It's like watching porn without sex or showing genitals/breasts, or eating a hamburger with nothing but the bread (not even sesame seeds).

Have you made a mold for those slugs before? Like, one shaped exactly like a foster slug or whatever they're called? I have this feeling that if you 1: Had the actual projectile separated from its mold-point before placing it in a shot cup and firing it, and 2: had it in some sort of pre-established, proven-to-be-aerodynamic shape, you might actually have a shot shell you can patent and sell. Keep in mind this is assuming you haven't tried this before, and it's also coming from a someone who is most certainly NOT a physicist, so I don't expect myself to be correct. But it'd be neat to see! And if the video already exists, can someone be awesome and link it to me? I'm on my video pass-through for the night!

I have to wonder whether the kind of wax used has any effect on things. If this is paraffin or a similar wax on the harder side, could it be breaking apart because the wax is a bit on the brittle side? Perhaps a softer wax like beeswax or maybe even beef tallow might deform rather than break apart...but there goes any cost savings. Could be interesting to test though.

It doesn't matter too much. The wax has very little strength. The things hold together because of how lead shot stacks uniformly in the shotcup. If there are any voids in the stack, it is a breakage point.

I would like to see,,,,, I'm not sure there are others......... 20 gauge wax slugs. Any 20 gauge shells. Compare 20 gauge to 12 gauge. I think it would make a good video. Your thoughts?

Jeff, years ago, IraqVeteran8888 had a video series about the "Little .410 That Could." Would you be able to do a video going over the topic in your own inimitable way?( yes, I am buttering you up a little 😉) I am curious about what the high speed camera would show. (Those little Brazilian .410s were cheap, but man are they tough.)
