Very Very glad that you and your crew are safe so far! I have to ask, What About Cut-shells??? Have you thought about meat target testing these? I think I might answer my own question.....reliability issues and feeding problems, plus more than likely same results as wax slug. I'll have to see if my pump action will run them, reliably

@@christopherbishop4927 I've heard cut shells are basically useless out of any kind of tube or mag fed shotgun, only useful out of a breech. As far as damage, they'd be comparable to the wax slug meat target results at VERY CLOSE range, but with no real long range since they'd break apart after a very short distance, and probably pattern WORSE than conventional birdshot and retain less power at long range. Cut shells vs birdshot isn't going to be "enough of a difference to make a difference" and in any SHTF application you might need a shotgun, birdshot will outperform cut shells. All in all, the advantage cut shells give you isn't worth the effort when you can just get some candles and make wax slugs instead or just shoot unmodified ammo.

The more I see what a shotgun can achieve no matter whats loaded into it the more I feel a shotgun is the most logical weapon if you need a defensive weapon.
@RaptorJesus

If you think a shotgun is impressive, look up a modern, replica blunderbuss. I suggest InRangeTV's videos. So long as you have powder and *something* to act as wadding, you can basically shoot anything out of it. Pellets, roundballs, silverware, literal rocks right off the ground? Not a problem. You might not be hitting anything too far away, but at home-defense/personal-defense distances? It'll do the job. Obviously there are options that do other things much better, but if you're looking for the ability to use basically anything as ammo? Blunderbuss.

Very good points. I've been through many ammo-shortages and you can always find 12ga target rounds on the shelves when everything else has been grabbed up. Reduced recoil is another factor too with wax slugs. Some people can't handle the recoil from a 12 ga foster slug.

My assumption was always that wax slugs were desirable in situations where you don't want to use spreadshot but you also want to avoid overpenetration. For example: if you miss your intended target, a wax slug will break apart upon impact with an interior wall and the dispersed birdshot will cause much less collateral damage than a 12ga slug might. Basically I think of them as homemade "saftey slugs"

And the bleeding hearts are all about capture and re-home these unadulterated predators, but definitely won’t adopt these monsters. Further they are the worst offenders because they let them wander free as nature intended and don’t have them spayed or neutered because that’s cruel. A single cat can kill 10 endangered birds per day, and they can wipe out entire ecosystems in weeks.

Just to add to the "why" points. One of the big reasons for these was the idea that you would have a frangible slug that you can make yourself. Presumably, having the "stopping power" of a slug without all of the excessive penetration. Rather than going through all of your walls and your neighbours, it might just go through one wall before breaking up. I don't know if making these for personal defence purposes would amount to "pre-meditation" from a legal point of view but a lot of people thought these would give them a practical and cheap self defense round. Good to see a testing video on them. Been waiting for this one. Nice job as always.

My 2 cents, you covered the wax slugs very well, however I have an additional application for them. I have used wax slugs for hunting small game a longer districts. You need to use children’s crayon wax, when it drys it will hold together longer when fired and it usually easy to find. When I am hunting dove,quail and small game I use birdshot and it works well for the birds, rabbits and squirrels. I always carry a few wax slugs because if I want to shoot rabbits or squirrels at a distance longer than normal for bird shot it works very well. When you shoot at say 50 to 60 years light weight bird shot will spread and becomes very ineffective as the pattern is to large and shot is to light. You have to change tactics a little. You want to aim to hit the ground a little in front of the target. When it hits the ground it will break the wax and will send the pellets in a an a 2 to 3 foot wide pattern at the animal. Just my 2 cents, thank you for all you do for us.

I would add a fourth possible reason to use these which could also be a topic for a follow up video. Theoretically wax slugs would have far less penetration against walls and similar surfaces compared to slugs and buckshot. This would be due to the projectile breaking up when it hits a hard surface. So for defensive scenarios or any other time where over-penetration is undesirable wax slugs could be an option. Breaching rounds work on a similar principle, powdered metal held together with wax or a similar medium. It would be cool to see homemade breaching rounds tested as well.

@@suspicionofdeceit you literally cut the shell with a knife. If you cut a small groove around the circumference of the shell, about halfway into the shell material, near the wad, you basically make makeshift slugs. The projectiles do not open the crimp but send the whole business end of the shell flying. Lots of videos on how this is done.

I have cut the crimp out of winchester bird shot shells, dumped the pellets into a melting pot and poured the melted shot into a lee 1 oz slug mold. Once cooled i pushed the slug back into the bird shot shell i started with. I used them for deer season when you couldn’t find slugs anywhere. To my surprise they were very accurate and took deer just fine at 50 yards. In a pinch, it was good to have one of those $26 molds. I don’t have a chronograph but the point of aim only shifted an inch or so at 50 yards best I can tell. The one deer shot at 30 yards was a clean pass through with a very big nasty exit hole as expected. Love your work Paul and crew, keep up the great work!

Point #4 of why a wax slug: they fragment at the first hard object they hit and quickly lose effectiveness from there. So much less over penetration and risk to whatever may be behind a wall.
@shadoraeveon9312
@shadoraeveon9312 Жыл бұрын
What people don’t realize is that any round of any caliber that provides reliable penetration likely won’t be stopped completely by a human torso, and every single round available will go clean through a wall if missed. How far it goes/ how much energy it carries afterward is a different story, and depending on the energy of a specific hollow point it might not penetrate clean through, but at that point is it really effective enough if say the target was sideways and maybe an especially “big boy”, that you’ll effectively penetrate through a meaty arm and still be able to reliably penetrate the ribs and carry onto the heart? The human body is very soft, especially if you miss bone, and drywall is basically paper as far as a bullet is concerned. If you have variables you’re worried about hitting beyond your target (obviously within the confounds of your home) it would be much more effective to yell for your family loud enough to wake them to get on the ground so they aren’t nearly as much in harm’s way than to compromise your choice of ammunition. If you have a baby or something that obviously has no way of helping the situation, maybe try to take as high or low as possible as to miss. Know your target and what’s behind it at all times, and react accordingly.

It makes a more frangible projectile. It dumps all the energy in the first 12 inches and that's it. Reduced pass through, greater initial energy transfer, good for things like more densely populated areas, like apartments or condominiums. One of the best things about this style of ammunition is that they disperse easily when they hit drywall. One pellet may injure someone, but even half a dozen pellets of number seven and a half randomly distributed over a person are unlikely to be fatal. It's always surprised me that somebody doesn't produce this stuff commercially for police departments. Comparable to rifle varmint ammunition with heavier jackets softer lead cores and large polymer tips that's designed to disintegrate on contact with a target but only disintegrate after hitting your coyote or prairie dog or whatever. It's a good concept overall, I'll admit though that I'm lazy when it comes to loading or modifying shotgun shells, so I just run number four copper plated buck coyote loads with flight control wads. Inside 30 yards it has a similar effect, cuz it's kind of what they were designed to do.

Traditional buck shot and rifled slugs have become hen's teeth where I work, but we have an overabundance of Monarch and Winchester dove and target loads that are quite cheap. If one is in a pinch and needs something that is decently lethal, it is way easier to make wax slugs right now than to obtain decent buck or slugs. Wax slugs seem to also have the benefit of not choking up pump shotguns the same way that cut shells tend to do. I actually didn't even know wax slugs were a thing until this video.

I myself have used the Speer target 38 plastic bullets and they were quite accurate in 4 inch barrels or longer. I don’t believe that they still make them or at least I haven’t been able to find them anymore . I still have some and they’re great for teaching a new shooter the fundamentals of shooting and not have them not trying it because of the noise and recoil of a regular round. Thanks for sharing

The other technique I've heard of for attempting to replicate this is cut shells. By cutting the shell nearly in half over the wad where the cushion in the middle will normally be, it's possible for the crimped end of the shell to leave with the shot charge and hold it together down range. Usually the cut is a slight spiral and the ends overlap leaving a small amount of plastic to hold the two ends together, but immediately tears upon firing. It's not as effective as the wax, but it's an option if you don't have wax. There's always the claims of over-pressure, but it's been widely used with modern firearms in good condition and standard pressure bird shot.

Extraction issues are common with this technique unless you are using a break action.

@@john-paulsilke893 I've never seen it done with anything else. I guess that's a good reason.

Brent I had a Chinese 870 clone that could run anything and rarely had issues even with cut Universal shells. They are complete crap as bad as the worst .22lr ammo and even cut shells worked fine from it. Still, break action for the win.

You also can't reload a cut shell, but it will stay intact with the wax-slug method.

@Matt KissMyassSocialist Did you read or see first hand cases where that damage was caused? If there is some article about it, please post a link.

Wow, what an unexpected, educational and interesting video. I once heard of something like this in a muzzle loader sometime in the last 50 years, but never pursued it. Now I have a new challenge and feel like a kid with a new toy. I've always pressed a .38 brass into paraffin and powered it with just a primer to discourage neighborhood pets from doing things in my yard without killing or harming them. I won't hurt my friends animals who just want to mark up my yard with terrible smells, attack the birds and tease my dogs. But its fun to watch them launch across the yard and break the wind barrier in just a few steps.
