There couldn’t be any video better at expressing the dilemma of getting attention due to nationality and yet sometimes wanting to escape from that identity that sticks on you, making people only see you as a stereotype of your nation, ignoring what’s deeper inside.

Like being seen as the shiny thing everybody wants to touch simply because of who you are and never what you've done. Pretty soon you begin to feel as though you've never done anything worth more than your race or your parents or grandparents and the odyssey found within it by outsiders.

That is also happening right now with people that have caucasian skin, but are of different decent/ethnicity. They are all being labeled as just “ white” people, even though people from Italy identify as Italian, people from France ad French, German, Danish, Dutch, Spanish, Greek etc . Peoples cultural identity is being taken away and being homogenized as “ white” by the way they appear. Which is absolutely insane. And couldn’t be more false.
@cosmonaut68106 ай бұрын
Exactly. So well put. Also as mixed origin I struggle that I don’t truly fit in or speak the language well enough there - people obsess about how light skinned and western I am, and in UK I’m exotic and Middle Eastern. It’s a lack of belonging, constant othering and struggling to belong anywhere for me. As you get older you focus on other things, like having a family and a career, I’m settling down with a mixed man who also has the same experience so at home we forget about it but when we go out people assume so many strange things about us and where we come from. We’re both actually born in England and have careers in English teaching and local government so very culturally rooted to the land, but to others we are on a holiday. 🤣

I think this video represents being famous or being different outside and the inside. One hour ago you're on a big stage giving concerts to giant crowds and then you're going home and it's just you and your inner self. You show people things that you want to show and some just don't want to be shown or known.
@edaozyurtkilinc4 жыл бұрын
as mentioned in Johari window actually which his songs have an impact on me to find out my inner self when i am on my own.
@cosmonaut68106 ай бұрын
This video definitely represents a cultural ideation of ethnicity and heritage, but I also really feel it represents how it feels to be perceived as attractive or desirable. People constantly yearning to be closer but not knowing the real you at all. You’re just an idea in peoples head and they can treat you superficially because of that. You don’t even want to be the real “you”. The real “you” is nothing special, nothing golden.
@kol6345 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think I understand the song's meaning at all so forgive me if I got it all wrong, but it feels really obvious that this video is about how he feels trapped in this persistent, Western ideation of what Egyptian or even just the Arab diaspora can provide for the European gaze in music, hence the pharaonic motifs and then sense that he can't escape the expectations of providing that "Egyptian" influence and exists in limbo between the two identities(Belgium/English influences versus Egyptian/Arab), and instead make peace with their coexistence? Anyone else have thoughts on this?
@bryanmora20475 жыл бұрын
I do too think he's trying to deal with his cultural identity and also the image that he, as an artist, and his music projects to the world. I haven't paid so much attention to the lyrics and their meanings, but at least the video really makes me think he's trying to sublimate or clear his internal relationship with his inheritance.

I agree...I also think that people fetishise him by his "exotic" heritage and his looks....I often see in the comments of his videos people always point out that he looks like a greek statue, like a egyptian god, like "something" mediterranean, exotic, etc....maybe something like that has to do with this video
@Christina_Hira4 жыл бұрын
kol634 I can see that now that you’ve mentioned it. It seems as though he fought to not be remembered only in the shadow of his famous Egyptian grandfather (the pharaonic references); thought he succeeded at the end of the day(wiping the golden paint off), only for it to reappear again in the morning.
