You all asked for it so here is. Part 1 of the build series on the Tamiya Fighting Buggy! I recently got this kit, TAM47304, and I am excited to dig into all the part and pieces and get to building. This buggy has a very unique rear suspension setup and over all a very cool look to it!
You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

The Fighting Buggy is such an enjoyable build and the parts quality is top notch.👍 I went with the high gearing and kept the stock motor and it's fast enough. As you say, the motor isn't actually screwed into the gearbox, which is quite unusual. There's no need to install the little battery retainers - they're for Tamiya's LiFe battery pack. A standard 7.2V NiMH stick pack will slide in under the upper deck without issue. Good luck with the rest of the build! 👍
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was wondering about the battery situation. I was going to run a small lipo if a regular pack would not fit but good to know it will slide in there! So far I am loving the build and quality of all the parts. It is supposed to be ridiculously hot outside the end of the week and the weekend so I will probably be inside working on it some more. I just hope I can paint the body, it is supposed to be terribly humid too...

It just seems sketchy with the way it mounts, I guess the different way it mounts is so unique and I have never used it before so I'm kind of leary of it. Good to know it can handle more and I may upgrade later as it is super easy!!

It is a really neat and unique kit. Same chassis as the Sand Scorcher but the rear suspension is a lot different and I fell in love with the wonky/unique way it works!! It is a fun one to build and one you can appreciate the engineering that went into this long ago! It is not going to be the best performing one in your collection but is certainly an awesome one to have!!

Great tips, great colour choice, and you’re never rambling! Just perfect timing, I have my espresso lungo (large espresso) and my iPad watching your video, before heading to work for a late shift. I love the SRB chassis. I hope to get a Fighting Buggy, but until then, I will enjoy your build. You will find that, compared to modern models, they weigh a ton. I have heard that the rear suspension leaks, but I would like to hear your opinion, maybe the rerelease fixed this problem.

It is a hefty kit, lots of metal! I think the rear shock is built very well and I guess its possible the bottle leaks a little?? From what I can tell the shock assembly should be pretty leak free but I'll find out!! So far it has been a wonderful build and due to the nasty hot weather we will be getting at the end of the week and the weekend I will have plenty of time to mess with it!

Hi Addam, you will enjoy the vintage build style to this model although sometimes it'll leave you scratching your head. Take note of the front suspension parts, they are labelled for left and right sides, upper and lower. Can get confusing if you have them all laid next to one another. Good luck with getting your oil in the rear damper set up! If you find a way of doing it whilst avoiding air bubbles you'll have to let us know the trick. I haven't found one yet!👍ATB Darren.

Still have my super champ and its my favourite. It was the first tamiya car i ever drove. It was the competition variant of the original Roughrider (which was based on the full size Funco SS1) but with a pcb type chassis and single rear shock. It also came out with a 'tuneable' racing speed controller over the roughriders 'wiper' type
@AddamsPlayground

That is super cool you still have your original. I love the looks of it and after learning how to drive it with the locked rear diff it is really fun. The lack of steering and that rear end shoving it forward, it takes a little finesse to get it turning well. They are both terrific looking buggies!

If money was no option I'd buy another just to have in the box! A very well presented kit! I may upgrade things at a later date but I have never been a huge upgrade guy and I am also impatient when it comes to new toys so waiting around to build it is never an option around here!! 😂

Sport Tuned is worth it, but a real improvement is a 35 or 45 turn motor (maybe a 5 segment 16 T - haven't tried yet) to get softer starting and more powerful and controlled slow speed driving. The max speed may be only half of what you get from a 27 or 23 turn - so it's body friendly too.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I am going to give it a go with the stock motor and setup and see how it does. It may get some tweaks down the road if needed. It will not be one I drive all the time so stock may be perfect. Thanks for watching and for checking in!!

Yay! Always wanted one of these as a kid (well the original) but they were well expensive, being an 80s kid these were the top! (anything with mono shock was cool in the 80s!) Think I’ll have to save me a little more cash and plunge!
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 жыл бұрын
They are not cheap but you are getting much more than a pile of extruded plastic parts. Other than the servo saver and the small tree with the battery stays and other small bits the parts are all metal.and FRP. Of course the $3 in bearings also adds at least $30 to the kit price as well! You are getting a lot of nice machined aluminum and cast metal parts which gives it that little extra I was willing to pay for. It is also so unique and I have never seen one in person I really wanted to experience it!

Thanks! More than likely it will get painted just to make it that much better. To be honest at this point I enjoy building them more than driving them. Beautifully presented kit and such an iconic build. No need to paint as comes moulded in the correct blue. Start with the standard silver can and then upgrade to the ball diff if you want to add a sports tune although really good fun out of the box! Pure Tamiya goodness 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇸

I have done the decals right over the body but it does look a bit nicer in paint. That extra shine is nice. It is going to be so hot and crazy humid I may forgo it though, we'll see, still up in the air about it! I think with the stock motor I'll be happy with it. This is the first kit I have ever seen where the motor just kinda lays in there and the end cap keeps it from spinning around... Odd but seems to work just fine (at least on the bench so far). I. Enjoying all the metal and machining goodness of it!!!

It is a fantastic build and a great looking buggy. It drives really well but does have a wide turn radius. I knew it was not a quick turning buggy but it takes a little bit to get used to the way it turns and what you need to do to get it to turn. On power turning is outright awful. Off power can be too quick so there is a fine line of partial throttle that is kind of the sweet spot to aim for. It is a very old design and very true to its root so it drives like a buggy from the very early 80s!! I am super glad to have one and I love it!!

Looks like a great kit Addam. There’s seems to be a huge following for these kits. Much like a Harley Davidsons owners club. I’ve never built one of these , but every time I watch one of your videos, I get closer and closer to hitting the button on one. Space and organization for tools and parts is key it seems. I’m very limited on space and things get knocked around all the time🤣. Think that’s one of the reasons other than the cost of these kits , that I haven’t gotten one and gravitated to RtR stuff. Your doing a great job pulling me in brother! Looks like lots of fun for sure. Great video !👊🏼😝
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I get it RTRs are way more convenient and you only need the space to work on them and not a full spread out build. Some of the builds I have had had the entire workbench covered with parts trees and stuff. The semi truck build I had to bring in a small table in to set the remaining parts out on!! At this point I honestly would rather build them than drive them. I still drive them all and all are ready to go out and run but I generally run the same few to beat on and tear up and leave the built ones in a good condition. I think the collection is up around 70 cars and trucks of all types and brands so I have plenty to choose from and space is getting to be an issue for me too. They keep showing up so I'm going to have to figure out something!! I hope you do get one to build and the Neo Fighter is a good one to get started on that isn't a vintage style re-release and does not have 1000 parts to it so maybe one to check out. It is in the lower price range too.

Thanks! For some reason words have not been my friend lately and I was drawing a blank so spring flappers was what I went with. The sales pitch was probably more along the lines of "finely machined, precision suspension cantilevers, activated by a coupled high strength machine milled rod that interacts with the modified oil dampened shock absorption unit" but I like spring flappers a lot! LOL, thanks for watching!!!

All the metal parts are pretty awesome! I would be too afraid of scratching up the metal to drive it though. Much like the Kyosho Turbo Optima with the gold metal chassis. It looks so incredible that I would never want to run it. I have not seen the Fighting Buggy built before. I am super interested to see the funky rear suspension come together!

That rear end is what sold it for me! I wanted to get the sand scorcher but the price and the pain of painting it kept me from getting it. This one just told me I needed it in my life so I went with it, glad I did! I will be working on it more later this week. It is supposed to get disgustingly hot and humid so I will be more than happy to stay inside then!!

@@AddamsPlayground I really want a sand scortcher too...then I saw the trick suspension of the fighting buggy and I wanted one of them too...then I remembered that I would just end up breaking them and decided against both. I don't enjoy "bashing" nor sending stuff to the moon. I enjoy thrashing vehicles around, avoiding breaking them but inevitably driving into a tree or cartwheeling them arse over steering rack is my M.O. as I cannot drive my way out of a wet paper bag.

@@canuckchuck8836 I have my dedicated hard runners that I could care less if they break or not and then I have the collector ones that get driven much less aggressively! I have the Granite, 2 Rustlers and a bandit I can drive without care so it makes it easier to drive these a little less rough. I flip em and roll em from time to time but it mostly in the grass so now really damage done! But I get it, one of these days you will give an get one though!

It still takes some force but you put the insert in side ways and kind of roll it into the tire and it will go about 1/2 way in. Then it is just working it a little from one side to the other and it pops right in.

Very special buggy, wish it was still called the Super Champ though! But what a work of art! I have a Sand Scorcher and its a Mk1 so its my pride and joy of my fleet! These old school legends are amazing, metal everywhere and have so much history behind them do the SRB series that include the champ in my eyes but its a gray area and in fact the Super Champ and this rere version are not a SRB! or to some its referred to as SRB version two? Special racing buggy debate lol has been a topic many times over! Looking forwards to seeing what you do with the body? Looks great like it is but its a little light in colour! But l would be tempted to ues it as it is! Haha lazy these days!😆 But it will look better painted and red roll bars of course mate 😉 Fantastic kit to build! Cheers James.

Hi, I've got an old SRB too. Do you still run the original motor? Maybe you know, which 540 motors fit into the slightly tighter old SRB gear box? I'm looking for a replacement and can't find the right info.
@mad-beerc3818
@mad-beerc3818 2 жыл бұрын
@@coolcycles Hi buddy yeah its difficult with the originals as the gearbox has those little metal lugs that sit in the gearbox case that holds the motor in place. My old Scorcher has been retired to shelf duties now with its original motor, but if you get a dremel you can take the lugs off and you need to slightly wear down the diameter too then you can fit a sports tuned 😉 Back in the day the black sprint motor was the option and you could pop it right in!

Didn't the old ones have a different type of FRP chassis plate? Wasn't it the clear/yellowish one? Maybe I am misremembering it too. I have never even seen one in person before so I am not sure. This is all new to me!! I am pretty sure it will get painted just to make it all shiny and pretty!! I am enjoying it a lot and I see a sand scorcher in my future!!!

@@AddamsPlayground Yeah probably best painting it Addam! The end result is worth it! You have probably done it already? If so l hope it went to plan! Tamiya is making us lazy especially with these precut/pre-painted bodyshell( e.g Thundershot) l for one am cool with Tamiya doing the donkey work! Yeah the original was a yellow/green FRP. Tamiya really did revamp the Champ! Just about too much but gets away with just lol l would of loved it a little more like the original but still a fantastic buggy and l will have to get one at some point! Iol its on a long list! PS everyone has to have a Scorcher in the collection! Look forward to seeing yours 😉

@@mad-beerc3818 I haven't even gone and gotten the paint yet but I am pretty sure I will paint it. I kind of like the pre painted bodies at times. Some I want to do my own thing with or paint certain areas where they would be decals otherwise. For the thunder shot I was happy to see it was pre-painted as I did not want to do that rear swoopy part. They did a great job and it should be a quick and easy decal and done situation!! Precut decals are a relief from time to time.
