This was my first rc car back in the mid 80’s. Got it on vacation in Florida. I remember the 18 hr drive back home to Ohio, I think I had the kit on my lap the entire trip just looking at the parts. I’m 49 now and heading back to Florida for vacation in 3 weeks. My plan is to buy another Grasshopper while there. A little late here but I wanted to share. I was in college from 83-88. I built Grasshoppers and Hornets for the local Hobby shop for grocery money. I think I got $20 and the shop charged the customer $30 on top of the entire set including radio, battery, and charger. I think I built two a week for about two years straight. It was guaranteed money and I could build them while watching TV between studies. I had an extra set of beater tires and would run each one in the dorm courtyard for a full battery before delivering them to pick up new ones. I never owned one but got to drive them for 6 minutes a week for two years :) Great memories and great video! Thank you :) A few years back I bought a Re-Re Hornet kit with the intention of displaying in front of the framed box lid. I think it will need a Grasshopper to go next to it :) :) :)

In 1984 I was 16 years old. With one of my first pays as a Sheetmetal apprentice I took my first solo train ride to the other side of town to purchase my first RC car. It was indeed a Tamiya Grasshopper. I could not afford any radio gear so it sat for a few weeks with me drooling over it while I saved up. This hobby has been my only true love and some say I have a problem. I have only one addiction which think is a healthy choice. Thanks for the flash back Glen.

I will never get rid of her Grasshopper, she picked the paint colors out and told me what she wanted her driver to look like ( Pink Helmet and suit ) lol!! But, as for me, my very first hobby quality entry level RC build was the Kyosho Outrage. I loved building that car with one of my more experienced RC kit building buddies who showed me the ropes. He passed way in Sept 2022. The RC Hobby world has always been an important part of my life...and I have had the opportunity to introduce lots of people get into the sport and share with them all my knowledge in the RC sport. Another great video. The grasshopper was going to be my first car back in 1989, never happened, the Madcap came out (first person to race one in Scottish Nationals). 2019 came along final bought one, what a great car, so much fun. It has now turned into project Grasshopper Watanabe. Keeping black chassis and biro shocks, changing all the other black to purple/pink. Added tuned black rs540, keeping it brushed. New shell with purple/pink decals from kyosho concept 5 helicopter, traced from the original grasshopper decals. This is what tamiya is about. Fun, stylish, allows you to be self expressive. Tamiya should put a smile on your face and a smile on those who see it. Tamiya is about taking part and having fun, with an old tamiya being second last is like being first. Over the years the styling of tamiyas have drawn as much interest in the pits as a winning schumacher. 3 million or so sold and each one a story to tell. This is what tamiya means. Could go on and on, hope you are still awake but this may add some thoughts for Sundays video.

A little different approach with me and Tamiya. I built a TT02 car as my first one and loved it. I bought it because I wanted a kit car and saw the Tamiya kits had a realistic look to them and some were pretty affordable. I love putting them together and love the detail in Tamiya cars. Growing up my dad and I were more into model trains like Lionel. He has all of his trains from when he was a kid, the RC cars were a little outside of what my dad is into. For me though Tamiya crosses that line of a detailed model and of course rc car so I am getting into them on the backend and learning about the huge impact they had on the rc industry back in the 80s and 90s. I guess that feeling of wonderment is really exciting for me even though I dont have any nostalgia for it. I like things from the 80s and 90s cause i think they had more imagination and things were more creative back then. I cant afford to own a bunch but as a 32 year old man I literally just bought the grasshopper kit in the candy green. I want to build a lunch box or midnight pumpkin next and then maybe a clodbuster. Eagerly awaiting my grass hopper to come in and im avoiding any build videos because I want the experience of opening everything up for the 1st time. I find your videos fun and very informative as someone that doesnt know much about Tamiyas. Thank you!

You had me laughing out loud when you went to the clip of your younger, slimmer “brother”!!! 😂😂😂 The grasshopper epitomises everything that is Tamiya, easy to build, easy to drive, robust and looks awesome. There is just something magical and special about it, just looking at the box takes me back to such happy times. I’d say that anybody who doesn’t love the grasshopper really has no heart. I’d agree that the 2nd best selling kit is probably the Lunchbox and I think that would probably be followed by the Clodbuster which is my most iconic kit, in 1987 people were just staggered by the size of it and probably still are just staggered!!! It has many shortcomings compared with modern trucks but it has a charm like so many Tamiya kits and it’s a blast to run and it will always hold a special place in my heart. My first kit was a mud blaster which I’m still waiting for them to rere, it has to be coming surely!!! I’d also like a rere of the original Clodbuster with the white wheels although obviously without the Chevy grill and tailgate sadly and awesome artwork on the box.

A year or so later he upgraded to the Boomerang....and again I wasn't allowed near it. When I reached 10 I finally got a Tamiya Lunchbox as my first hobby grade RC, even though the Lunchbox will always be my favourite because it was my first RC, I've got to pay respect to the Grasshopper to giving me the bug, even though I never got to drive it, I remember watching it (with pure jealousy of course) going flying through the air, barrel rolling, through the neighbours gardens much to there disgust. Neither of us can remember what happened to it, probably went in a car boot sale, but the memories last for sure. Here's to the legendary GrassHopper 👍

Like many, the Grasshopper was my first RC. I asked my dad for an RC10 for my birthday and I got the Grasshopper...which I totally understand. The RC10 was around $250 and still needed a motor, radio and battery so probably about $350-400 all in. The grasshopper was around $100 (in 1986) and with radio and battery you could be driving for less than $200. It was probably a good thing, from what I've heard, the OG RC10 was very challenging to assemble; specifically the transmission. At 13 years old, I struggled with the Grasshopper. I can imagine the difficulty I would have had with the RC10.

I loved the look of it and the idea of upgrading and having parts available to keep it running. I had just enough to buy a second hand one from a lad at school but someone bet me to it and I didn't find another ho by grade car at that price for over a year. Ended up buying a second hand frog but the Grasshopper was my first love so to speak. Fast forward 30 years and it was the first kit I bought and built. I think given how available they _still_ are I suspect they're a great seller. When I rekindled my love of RC, it was a re-re Grasshopper. I never owned one back in the day, but I knew all about it. I like the statement about "..the ties you have to it make it special" but I tell you what, it's a really, _really_ good basher. Robust and simple. My 5yr old launched it off the porch table onto the concrete porch floor, and I gasped. It was fine. I've run it into countless trees. No problems. Rolled it in the carpark on asphalt, scuffed roof but otherwise okay. It just takes it, and as I've mentioned elsewhere with a 1300mah NiCD that I have kicking about it gets an easy 30 minutes. I've got bored of running it before running down a 3800mah Nimh pack, it just wouldn't stop bloody going. That 380 might not be super quick but it's right for the chassis, and it's efficient as hell.

A neighbor kid eventually got it ran over by a truck, completely destroyed the body and speed control. I replaced just the speed control and ran it another year or so without a body. I got a Grasshopper in like 1989 after I got my Lunchbox and I was kinda disappointed. I hated the 380 motor vs the 540. The shocks felt much cheaper. I ended up killing this the quickest. The noted things I remember was the battery cover on the bottom kept coming off all the time. Just for kicks I put a technigold out of my Big Wig in it..

Yeah, tha Grasshopper was my first, followed by the Frog, which I the preferred, just as it was quicker. But the one I always wanted was the Sand Scorcher! So glad we can buy new retro again, out for a walk yesterday, walked past shop selling the Monster beetle, that was an expensive walk 😂😂

I agree , the Grasshopper was my first hobby grade rc car . I got the kit for my 12th birthday in 1986 . My parents couldn't afford to get all the equipment to go with it so I had to stare at the built kit until Christmas day when I got a charger , radio and battery.

Although the Grasshopper wasn't my first RC, it was however my first Tamiya RC. Unfortunately, I wasn't old enough to have been able to enjoy an original one in it's hey day but I purchased a Re-Re a few years back and it's still hands down one of my most enjoyable cars in my fleet to take out for a nice walk with the family around the neighborhood (With my Lunchbox being a very close 2nd, lol). It's simplicity and robustness is practically unmatched. Mine has a 540 motor and full bearings and I'd say that's truly all that car needs to have a nice pleasurable drive. Keep up the great work Glenn, would love to see the Hopper debut when you're done with the build!

For me the most iconic is the Sand Scorcher/Rough Rider kits as that was my entry point as a 10/11yr old....my first car was the SS, then i managed to twist my dads arm into getting me the Blazing Blazer for xmas the year it came out which i think was either 82 or 83, only ever ran it with 2channel though transplanted from my SS with two 7.2v hump batteries connected rather than the big slab 6v which was the proper battery for the kits, the two 7.2v batteries sided by side gave me a little more speed though, there were three of us intially with SS's and two of us went onto the Toyota and Blazer...the other guy who was the first of us and a bit older too(Alistair) to get the SS the year it came out introduced us to them, his was box art blue and white and to see it ripping up the cricket pitch in the wet with water jets being ejected from the rear wheels was something else, the following xmas when i got mine i did it British Racing Green(didnt have the skill or patience to go box art even though i put together the kit in around 10hrs which wasnt bad for a 11yr old hahaha and our other mate Timmy who got his the same xmas did his in a Metallic Gold colour but his dad built it him haha. Then it was either 12 or 24months later that Timmy and I went onto the three speed kits, Timmy had the full three channel radio so could change gear on the move. I was so excited to see new kits come and religiously bought the catalogues, they were porn to me haha, and pestered the Beatties shop in sheffield everyday over the phone enquiring about hop ups and any news of new kits....our phone bill was stupid....my dad wasnt pleased hahaha.......i thought the Superchamp was iconic and class too but was put off that one with it not having a sealed radio box as such and i believed that was a flaw and it cost a bit more than the SS and RR......i liked to get mine swimming hahaha. To be honest when they moved to plastics i fell out with Tamiya a little, feeling they had gone backwards moving from metal to plastics. I resurrected my love again around 1990 with the Terra Scorcher, and wish i had at the time got the Avante, Egress and one or two others etc too...but money was a thing back then once Xmas presents had stopped and living with my girlfreind at the time who wasnt impressed with my hobby haha. Great video again Glenn and now looking back at the Grasshopper i can see why it has appeal and i would love one for nostalgia's sake too. Initially i was excited about it when i saw it had the SS wheels and tyres...and the hornet with the Superchamp tyres on the rear and got some of those for my SS but as i mentioned i was put off by the plastics of the grasshopper and newer kits.....those bloody rear superchamp spike tyres...god i struggled to get the wheels in haha.

Hot Shot was the first hobby grade RC that got my attention, wanted one for Christmas but never got it, I got a Grasshopper haha, so yes for me it's the most iconic RC car. It's what got me in to racing, even with the 380 motor !

Most iconic for me is the Frog because it was the first Tamiya buggy I saw and I fell in love. I couldn’t believe how fast it was and I dreamed of owning one. Never did but I got a Boomerang for my birthday a couple of years later followed up by a grasshopper I saved my pocket money for. Got it at the hobby shop on the way home from school and rode home on the bus with it. An original Frog, Boomerang and Grasshopper are all part of my collection now. Great video!

Brilliant Glen.. in my opinion it is Tamiya’s greatest ever buggy without question. Forget about racing heritage, forget about performance and all that stuff.. it’s the best!!!. Think of how many sold, it was so many peoples first buggy. Back in that golden era Glen if we had a few mates into the hobby I guarantee a couple of those lads would have been running the grasshopper.. It was fun, you could throw it about and it didn’t matter!!!. It was affordable to us not so well off kids!!!. Parts easy to get.. I could go on Glen.. Long live Tamiya’s greatest.. the Grasshopper👍

Was the first RC car I saw, but the first car I got was the Hornet. While I loved the Grasshopper once I started to look at buying one I preferred the look of the Hornet, it wasn't much more and it was a bit faster. I ran it for around 18 months then sold it to upgrade to a Falcon, but I didn't enjoy that as much. I 'upgraded' my Hornet with bearings and some Wild One wheels and tyres, and had a white body shell. I looked awesome. I also had this motor by, I think it was Demon. It went like the clappers (for the time) and gave my mates Boomerang good run for it's money. Now I've got back into RC one of the first cars I bought was a Hornet and Lunchbox. Both terribly flawed by todays standards, but both are great fun and bullet proof

I never had the Grasshopper back in the day but walking into any model shop it was always the box art of the Hopper that court your eye. Such a great looking buggy. I finally got a hornet a few months ago and was really impressed with the performance from such a cheap kit. Great video Glen, keep em coming 👍

Radio shack Golden Arrow was my first 7.2v car as I didnt have a hobby shop anywhere close to me. Neighbour had a Hornet and the Golden arrow was just short of the same speed. Difference was my car was much heavier I think. His car had good radio range too compared to the Arrow. Lots of years later I got the bug again and had to have another Arrow so now I have a few of those lol. Also 4 Tamiya, The fox, Baja champ, Blazing star that looks like an Avante( got it like that) and of course The almighty Grasshopper. Many many more others as well.

I love the golden arrow...i bought 1 from a yard sale for $8 n it was soooo new it had the fuzzies when the tires are new on it...it was spray painted purple but was brand new. The issue was a wire broke off the on off switch n my neighbor resoldered on for me in like a minute n presto brand new rc car....i drove that car till the tires were gone....i beat the snot out of that thing till the backs were slicks n the front tires split n fell off. Man it was the best. I had a few more gokden arrows over the years. My last 1 broke so i took out the midnight 2 stock motor n lrp esc n its in my grasshopper now lol. Its a beast lol..that golden arrow was modified with the lrp esc n motor cause the circut board that originally came with it was long gone lol

The Hornet was the first one I ever saw. Left an impression in my mind can still see to this day. A toy store owner drove around his Suburu Brat in the store that was a cool thing to see and eventually I bought my first Tamiya RC The Blackfoot at his store. A friend did have the 380 Grasshopper and it didnt make much of an impression on me because I had my Kyosho Tomahawk which was a lot better in many ways but I did like how well The Grasshopper turned compared. Never had one but I would buy one today it I didnt already have enough lol. Its a nice car and thanks for the video!

Yep , grasshopper was the first . Half hour run time with that little 380 motor . It screamed after putting in the black motor sprint and seven cell battery . Then it got slicks and a 69 Chevelle body . The Chevy . 132 feet in 4 seconds .
