Would just like to say thank you for re-igniting my interest back in this hobby. After 30+ years I’ve just bought a Tamiya Audi V8 touring car on aTT-02. I now wish I had kept all the cars I had had as a child back in the day but I’m sure I’m not the only one who watches your videos that feel the same. I’m hoping this will be the first of many builds over the coming months/years, it’s hard to choose what to build as there are so many great looking kits available. I have lots to learn after being out of the loop for so many years and the changes that have happened since but love watching your videos and gaining new knowledge that will help me out. Keep up the great work and enthusiasm as this was an incentive for me to do it all over again 👍🏻

Hoo my baby !! It is for me the most beautiful kit that I have. It is also my second kit that I bought when I was young after the lunch box more than 30 years ago. It is because of you that I bought it back last year and that I will buy the lunch box next month. So in 1 month I will have my two youth kits finally reunited. Thank you Gleen for all your memories and your beautiful anecdote. A +

The Hotshot was my first hobby grade RC, I have good memories running it all those years ago. I fitted all the Supershot parts back in the day, by saving my pocket money. That took me a long time, I remember the bearings were $4 each & I needed around 24 I think? It was a lot of bearings for one Buggy. I fitted a Twister Hurricane 15t mod motor with a steel pinion gear & a EK-700 FET ESC. Back in 2002, my mother told me to get the rest of my stuff out of the Garage, because I moved out a year before. To my surprise there it was my old Tamiya Hotshot, that I had forgotten about. I Still have it, 36 years later 👍🏻😎 Please do a running Video 🙏

what a beautiful bit of Kit that is right there Glenn, Four years ago when i started my Tamiya Collection Frenzy It was My Second Kit First being the Frog , and still has only ran the once on grass after the full build and painting and decals just to give it a test and is sitting pretty on the shelf of my desk along side the Frog which has had the same treatment along side the now new VQS , and Now The Mads cap which has been built and not yet fitted with elec's as thats staying NEW but to look at them everyday on my top shelf is such a great feeling and to know there Bran Spanking New is Super Cool, So watching This makes me feel all warm and happy inside probably sounds strange to some but growing up back in the day at 11 yrs old to have had a frog or Hotshot would have been like Ferris Builer on his day off to say the least he he he - Very Iconic and to me Priceless sorry for the Long babble but These Great Videos just get me going and i love this Hobby So Much its just Superb to say the least thanks so much for the efforts and great well thought out videos you create my friend - Thank you . :-))

Yes Glen a proper example there!!. The hotshot was another really popular buggy in our little group back in the day.. Also to be fair at that time it was a genuinely high end kit for us as they were that little bit more expensive than our hoppers and hornets and the like.. Again it truly is great Glen to see one again in it’s original state.. 👍👍👍👍👍

Legendary Tamiya buggy. As mentioned already in the comments, this version of the buggy only got a one month production run, in March 1985. This is denoted by the build manual that is stamped with the numbers 03/85. All other Hotshot kits from the 1980s had the manual that was stamped 04/85. Full list of differences from the Mk2/April 85 variants are : * Nylon 3-hole bumper. (Mk2 has no holes and made from polycarbonate) * Nylon front skid plate, that angled the bumper at a steeper angle than the Mk2 version. (Mk2 is polycarbonate and angled lower) * Front gearbox cases without external strengthening ribs and with thinner plastic debossed recesses to hold the front bumper stay in place. (Mk2 has ribs and thicker plastic, with no recesses, therefore the bumper stay is secured exclusively through bolt and nut. * Gearbox cases had extra internal holes. * Threaded & bossed front bumper stay that sits in gearbox housing recesses, and properly secured to gearbox housings via a screw at each end. * Front uprights with smaller diameter threaded holes & narrower mounting area. * Front ball connectors with matching smaller thread to the uprights. * Front driveshafts engraved with only one "ring" at each end (Mk2 has two rings at each end). * Some Mk1 kits also appear to have been supplied with a thicker roof with a gloss finish. Mk1 kits also had the floating resistors but early Mk2 kits got these too. Midway through production the Mk2 kits then got the glued-in versions. No 1980s Hotshot kit was ever supplied with the gold wheels as standard. That happened only with the Supershot. The gearboxes used in the Hotshot got further strengthening sections in conjunction with the release of the Boomerang/Bigwig/Hotshot 2 but its not clear if Tamiya put these gearbox trees in the very late Hotshot kits too.

Loved the video Glenn. Fond memories of my hotshot back in '85 and great to see the differences as building a re-release now for my son. Vaguely remember the bumper changing for the worse and not being popular but might be wrong on that one. Don't recall anyone having gold wheels at the club back then but do remember them looking amazing on the Fox. One thing I won't miss is burning the fingers on those heatsinks, used to leave the pattern on my finger as a child, ouch! :-)

Hey Glenn! My friend, personally, the Hotshot just never did it for me ?? I'm guessing it might have been cos i never actually saw one in the flesh so to speak , but it just didn't excite me if I'm honest my friend! That being said, i do now have a much greater respect for it after learning about it in your vid! It's definitely unique in terms of design and appearance, and obviously i now know it was Tamiya's first 4WD, so that fact alone makes me respect it much much more than back in the day! Ahahaha luv that last bit Glenn! Spent weeks painting a shell then finish n realise you left the protective film on!! haha!! Luv it! Thanks as always Glenn! Wes, Liverpool, UK

It's understandable that some may think that the 2007/Mk3 Hotshot is more-or-less the same, part for part as the Mk2, But in actual fact Tamiya made changes to most of the parts, so building a vintage Mk1/Mk2 from a re-release kit simply isn't viable as virtually every part got a subtle design change for the re-release. The only parts that could be used are the Z (driver figure) parts, S (servo horn) parts, plastic gears and bevel gears and a few of the pressed metal parts. Every other part on the re-release is different to the 1980s Mk1 & Mk2. Even the shade of red on the red plastic parts is different. It's subtle, but it's there.

Love the hotshot, I'm very lucky to have a three hole. The front arms are a bit different on the early ones, one of the triangular cutouts became a hole. I think that happened for the supershot shocks. The front dogbones have 1 line etched on the mk 1 and mk2 have 2 scores. It's very odd I can't work out why but it looks like you have the proper ones. I daren't run mine now, the parts are so rare and I'd hate to break it. Great video again👍

I recently tried restoring it, but I turned it into a resto-mod instead due to the very bad shape it was in…badly damaged from bashing back in the day. Your comment on the three hole bumper is what made me realize it was a MKI. I came across some differences to the new parts that might also be original to the MKI…the four wheel drive shaft has “hex” brass ends…not the slotted cylinder ends..also, the axles are three parts, main silver shaft with ball joint ends. I’m my KZbin video, you can see I had problems with some of the original parts…especially the 4WD shaft.

That’s cool! Used to love RC’s not much into the restoring part since I moved to another model than restoring and keeping it on the shelf.😂. However, getting into full scale cars especially JDM is more rewarding to restore, yes it costs more, but for me restoring my 94’ FD is far more rewarding and more cooler than restoring a RC. Thanks to RC I got more into building full scare cars, but kudos to you for restoring an awesome toy! Keep up the good work!

I had an early release Mk1, and then bought a 2nd kit in the 80's which got built to be a shelf queen. Traded the 1st for BMX parts, and sold the 2nd one many years later. Now, I wish I kept both cars. Just picked up a Mk2 assembled but never driven car with uncut body/decals. The rear arms have cracks where the screwpin goes in. That happened to my former shelf queen also. So back off the screw pins, so they don't crack the arms. Picked up 2 Re-Re kits to build and drive with my kid now, and he has a Hotshot 2 rere. Hotshot 1 for dad, Hotshot 2 for son, get it? LOL.

Hi Glen, any idea on the value these MK1 hotshots would go for ? I bought one with 2 years savings when I was a kid, it was definately an original 3 hole as it was the second one beatties in our area ever received and I was incredibly excited to buy and build it ! we painted it blue not red, and believe it's still in my parents house somewhere.

The Hotshot has always been a weird one for me. Always admired it, and even more so recently appreciating it's place in RC history and the "Tamiya Timeline" but I've never owned one. The suspension design is part of the iconic look but also for me why I was put off by it. Surely it can't handle as well as a conventional buggy? Maybe it is worth me trying to get a Hotshot II or Super Hotshot or something in time. Which is the best variant? It has to be said though the aluminium roof, the cage and cabin, the body lamps, the rear spoiler location, the motor position, the overall design is just so iconic and cool. Thank you again for another great video.

The Mk1 Hotshot also had shock springs made from mild steel, I've read - they switched to spring steel on the Mk2s. If you sit a Mk1 next to a Mk2 with similar shock builds and settings, the Mk2 will tend to sit a little higher

I have to say, when I bought my HotShot in 85 it had white wheels. I lived in the UK and that was what I got, white wheels. I do keep hearing folks talking about the original and how it has to have Gold wheels. Anyone know what gives? I even now have an original Hotshot as I wanted one for the collection the same as I had when I was a kid and it also have white wheels. My Super Shot and my HS2 both have gold wheels. I have always known it to be that way. Anyone know what gives with both my 85 Hotshots having white wheels?
