Useful review for prospective purchasers. I've not owned a Tamiya airbrush, but would buy on reputation based upon experience with everything in their product range used previously. I currently have five airbrushes currently including one Iwata. Hold the same view of Iwata expressed by you. Everything Sparmax I've bought as an aftermarket accessory has proven quality even if manufactured in China. I like the brand. So would buy a Tamiya Sparmax rebadge with confidence if on a tight budget. Currently using two Badgers, one Thayer and Chandler aka Omni, an Iwata and eBay Chinese cheapie, all double action, three gravity cup feed, two suction cup feed. Airbrush prices have come down over the past decade despite the generally averaging dreadful AUD exchange rate, making the current Tamiya product sourced overseas especially appealing. Aussie importers blame exchange and taxes, but the truth is the single line distro model for so many imported brands in this country so extorts the local consumer, that by the time they load an excessive wholesale margin and the retailer adds his, the product simply prices itself out of consideration in the domestic marketplace to anyone clued up, which is my guess why the Tamiya airbrush range isn't imported here. In my observation, Aussies (mentality) also tend to be blind 'brand sluts' following a name regardless the product. e.g. Despite its best sourced pricing incommensurate with discernible performance variation, support or quality, I'd be willing to wager Iwata sells better than Badger locally. For a top quality airbrush, the Tamiya HG range is definitely a 'hard to beat' in terms of bang for the buck value.

Van Diemens Land Model Bench A pleasure. Was a very useful out of the box initial review of a product which is neglected in You Tube reviews. I doubt I'll be buying any more airbrushes based upon need vs time remaining. But if I were to, your review would definitely steer me to trying a Tamiya HG.

The Tamiya airbrush I reviewed is made in Japan. I think the confusion comes from some Tamiya airbrushes being made by Sparmax and some not. Dan

Very thankful for the info about Iwata & Tamiya commonalities. Just got started airbrushing miniatures, and looking to upgrade from 20$ Fengda I got to prime and varnish things, since I already feel multiple things about it I don't like. This video helped me make final decision, so thanks!

Great review. Bought a Tamiya hg airbrush off your review. Can be purchased in Singapore @Tamiya distributor's store. Both springs used for the needle n air valve in the HG is softer compared to iwata hp-c+. My olympos hp-100b has harder springs @ needle n air valve compared to both iwata n Tamiya.

Hello, you can buy the Tamiya airbrushes in Europe too. I found them in Poland as I was looking for a second airbrush. I already own an Iwata HP-B Plus so it's reassuring to hear that Tamiya uses the same manufacturer. Thanks for posting! (I am from Romania by the way).

Hi Dan, I have just seen this video for the first time, and it was a great review, I did see on another hobby channel that stated the Tamiya airbrushes are made by Iwata, and that is what I use, but would like to get one of the Tamiya brushes, very best regards from a Kiwi living in Melbourne, happy airbrushing.

G'day sabbathian. The Tamiya is a great airbrush, but recently I purchased an Iwata HP-CS Eclipse airbrush with a larger needle that I feel is actually better for day to day modelling jobs and is certainly a much, much easier airbrush to clean. It would be my pick for a high end first airbrush over the Tamiya. I use both, but the Eclipse is certainly one that would be more useful day to day. I will be getting around to doing a video review of it, but you can find plenty of reviews and things already out there. Don't get me wrong. The Tamiya HG is a fine airbrush and very good quality, but it is quite delicate and hard to clean and if its your only airbrush, that could grow old rather quick. Anyway something to consider. Regards, Dan

Hi David. Afraid I am a babe in the woods with PE too. Never touched the stuff, before I returned to the hobby about three years ago. Most kits I do now, include at least some though. On this site you will find a bending tool review that I did and that tool gets some use, most recently on my armoured train kit, where I bent some PE for the roof. Only real tip I can give, is I prefer to use G-S Hypo Cement for glueing PE as it gives a bit of time to position the parts before it sets. Very handy when you are new to working with Photo-Etch. www.gshypocement.com I usually look on eBay for a supplier when I need to restock. Its around the $20 mark, but will last a long time and while it will eventually go off, it does seem to last quite a long time. Look forward to hearing from you. Dan

Yes, I've learn't to not take these or the Iwata brand airbrushes apart anymore then you have to. When I am done spraying and have cleaned the airbrush, I leave a little Ultimate Airbrush cleaner in the bottom of the colour cup between jobs. This has reduced the number of times I have to dismantle the airbrush for cleaning quite dramatically.

Thanks Jim. Its been a great airbrush. Its a bit fiddly to pull down and clean, but I can't fault its performance. When money permits I will probably invest in another Tamiya or IWATA airbrush, but with the larger needle.

I bought mine this week through amazone (first purchase ever) on the English site as I'm from Holland and no Amazone site exist for it and will be shipped out from Japan. This will be my first ever dual-action Airbrush. I'm still looking for an affordable compressor though and see a lot of Fengda advertised here. They're cheap. I only want to use it for the occasional painting of models and your review seems to be good enough for that. Maybe later on I might get a Harder&Steenback Evolution 0.2/0.4 combo. What compressor do you use?
@WorksOnMyComputer
@WorksOnMyComputer 7 жыл бұрын
G'day Sonny. Sorry for the delay in writing back to you. I've been down with the flu this week. My compressor is a generic compressor with a tank, that I purchased off ebay. Similar to the one you will find listed here: www.ebay.com.au/itm/Air-Brush-Compressor-1-6HP-for-Spray-Gun-w-Tank-Airbrush-Tattoos-Graphic-Hobby-/292178185515?hash=item44072d4d2b:g:W84AAOSwY4pZY1jx The same compressor is sold under a ton of different brands around the world. Anyway its worked fine for around two years now and I've had no complaints about it at all. I would recommend you get a compressor with a tank. You can get the compressor slightly cheaper without a tank, but its not worth the saving in my opinion. At this size the tank doesn't really stop the compressor kicking in pretty quickly when you start spraying, but it does help smooth out the flow and gives you a more consistent air pressure. Hope that helps. Dan

Hi Dan, great video. I bought a 0.3mm (fine?) version. I don't think my skills are up to working with the 0.2 yet. Would there be much difference in their ability to get really fine? And, can you tell me if I can change needle and nozzle of my 0.3 to a 0.2? Much appreciated. Great to see a fellow Aussie on YT!
@DansModelBench
@DansModelBench Жыл бұрын
G'day again Steve. I'm not aware of any conversion kit as such. 0.3 is really the great all rounder in my opinion anyway and you will find that the best size to develop your airbrushing skills on, so good choice there. While you can't quite match the .2 in fine lines, it can get very close with careful attention to air pressure and thinning of paint. Honestly its probably more a scale thing and what kind of modelling you do. If you do something like 1:35 tanks or 1:48 aircraft, you're sweet. If you do 1:72, you might sometimes wish for the finer airbrush, but with practice in most situations you can use the 0.3 just fine. I was painting camoflage on 1:76 Airfix tanks with a .35 airbrush, so its certainly possible. I don't use my .2 all that much in practice, but on occasion its handy. If it was my only airbrush, I would get frustrated with it as it puts out far less volume of paint. Actually I've been buying larger .4 and .5 airbrushes lately, as I've been striving to get nice gloss finishes on cars and truck models. Like I said 0.3 to 0.35 is the sweet spot for our hobby I think. Dan

@@DansModelBench Hi again! Many thanks for your encouragement and advice. I've got 3 airbrushes - Tamiya Sprayworks 0.3, Badger Patriot 0.5 (and I've bought a 0.5 conversion kit), and Iwata Revolution CR 0.5 Im really new to airbrushing, getting used to the process of changing colours, cleaning, and working on thinning ratios and pressures. What you tell me is spot on from what I can gather thus far. I'm gonna use the 0.3 mainly, and the larger for base coats and priming. Your videos are great. Subbed!

Very good video, one question, what is the thickest output pattern that can be obtained with this airbrush, I have a Paashe Talon, I lost the lid, and only shipping the lid is $ 23 dollars, which It is a bit uncomfortable, and I thought it would be a better idea to get another airbrush, either an iwata as long as it is not from the Neo series, it turned out very badly, I have a very bad experience with this particular series and maybe even bad luck, I had bought the complete kit, airbrush and compressor from Iwata, and this compressor never ran more than 5 minutes straight, it shuts off constantly, so I'm trying to decide whether to buy an Iwata Eclipse or Revolution. My other option is Tamiya, I finally want it to paint Tamiya 1:10 scale RC bodies, but I do need to know how wide the output pattern can be or which model would fit a little more to my needs. . I appreciate your help, Thank you.
@DansModelBench
@DansModelBench 3 жыл бұрын
G'day Leon, I'm not sure on its widest coverage as I've always used the larger airbrushes I have when I've needed coverage and with work and commitments around the house, I might not get to the bench for a few weeks to test for you. From my past use though, I would say it sprays around 70 percent of the area of my .35 Iwata HP-CS airbrush, although the paint would need to be thinner. I would recommend the Iwata HP-CS over the Tamiya if you are going to have just one airbrush. Its easier to dismantle and reassemble and you don't have to thin your paint as much to get it to spray smoothly. It will also cope much better with some of the primers out there like stynelrez and Vallejo and is just a more useful all around brush.

@@DansModelBench Good Morning Dan, I just bought Tamiya 74545 Spray-Work HG Airbrush III Super Fine, although I still do not have a delivery date, I bought it at Amazon from Japan, let's say that at a very good price in relation to the prices of the United States and my Country, it was also thinking of acquiring an Iwata, although I was focusing on the Iwata Anest Iwata Airbrush HP-CR Revolution, for the price, but since you mention it, I am going to paint 1:10 scale models, and I use automotive paints to do this task, So based on what you mention, if I think the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS would be better, only that it is considerably much more expensive, and I have not located it on Amazon from Japan, it would be to look for it again. Thank you very much for your input, Very Tanks, Atte. Cesar

I think your review would have shown a better air brush performance if you sprayed straight at the corn flakes box rather than at a 50 or 60 degree angle to it. plus the box soaks up the paint and spreads the pattern, you should have base coated the cardboard first.

I own this model brush, and it does perform OK when painting, but I don't like the design, especially when it comes to cleaning. That teeny nozzle, as the reviewer mentioned, is not meant to be removed on a regular basis, so gunk can build up in there. It's a tiny, dainty little thing, and God help you if you overtorque it when putting it back on, it's very fragile. The paint cup unscrews from the body, and underneath you have a little chamber that's a pain to flush and get really clean unless you remove that bloody nozzle. If you want to remove the needle without unscrewing the nozzle, you have to pull it back through the shaft body, which is dumb if it's dirty with paint or whatever. I find that I only use this brush when I need to paint fine lines, otherwise I stick with my eclipse.
@DansModelBench
@DansModelBench 5 жыл бұрын
Cleaning this airbrush is a pain and like you I tend to use my Eclipse for most work and the Tamiya for the fine stuff. That turns out to be fairly infrequently, but when I need it, it does work well. Using it as a primary airbrush in your stash, isn't something I would recommend though. The Eclipse is certainly easier to keep clean every day.

@DansModelBench
@DansModelBench 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, I wouldn't recommend this Tamiya as your first airbrush. There is a school of thought that you need a very fine needle to do model painting, but that is not true. If you have the cash I can recommend the Iwata HP-CS which I do probably 90% of my work with and has proven ultra reliable for me. I review it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b521fKathdutpZY If cash is a problem get something like a .3 size needle airbrush from someone like Sparmax, Pasche or Badger. I say those brands because they all offer spares, which protects your investment in them and they sell models that are a little cheaper. All of them have pros and cons and all have their fans, but the goal is to get a half decent airbrush you can learn with and can get spares if you break something. The .3 size means you can still do fine work, but get decent coverage also for bigger jobs. You also stand less chance of paints clogging or needing lots of thinning to work with a .3 needle. Sparmax would probably be my pick based on price vs performance and if you Google "Sparmax .3 dual action" you'll find a heap of reviews, but better still a heap of prices so you can find one that suits your budget hopefully. If you build planes or tanks, then you want a dual action airbrush, which will make it easier to do camo patterns. For compressors, ideally get one with an air tank if you can afford it. That stops pulsing and gives you a smoother and more consistent airflow. You are likely to keep the compressor even after you upgrade your airbrush or get another size airbrush, so worth spending a bit more on the compressor up front. None of this is dirt cheap, but something like a SparMax airbrush and a no brand compressor like this one, would make a great setup and cover most needs easily: www.ebay.com.au/itm/OPHIR-NEW-Portable-Mini-Air-Compressor-with-Tank-for-Hobby-Cake-Decoration-220V/182516328114?epid=1880712490&hash=item2a7ed226b2:g:ticAAOSw65FXvq8Q:rk:4:pf:1&frcectupt=true Oh and quick tip. Sparmax also make a ton of airbrushes for Tamiya now. Basically Tamiya use Sparmax and the manufacturer of Iwata for their airbrush range, so if a local store sells a .3 Tamiya airbrush its going to be a good one too. Just make sure they can get spares for them as thats the main problem with the Tamiya airbrushes. Once you are more experienced with aibrushes, you can figure out the original manufacturer of your Tamiya airbrush and also figure out suitable spares, but you don't need that hassle starting out. The message here is whatever brand you get, you do want to be assured you can source spare parts in your part of the world. As a beginner you will make mistakes and most likely damage something (I did at least!) and you want that peace of mind that spares are available to protect your investment in the airbrush. As long as your airbrush is a reputable brand, it will get on with the job and certainly at the start it will be capable of far more then your skills allows. So you will have plenty of time to learn about airbrushing and keep getting better and better results with your purchase as you do. After that you'll be in a position to decide if you want to move on to another airbrush for some use cases or just out of curiosity or like a lot of people, you're happy with what you have. Good luck with your purchase and I'm sure like most of us, you'll learn to love airbrushing your models. Post up a video when you do get your setup and share with us what you got. :) Hope that helps. Dan

Hey James. Is it a new airbrush? Try winding the knob out at the end of the airbrush and then see if that helps. The trigger might not be going back far enough. Also check your airbrush pressure and that your paint is thin enough. Failing all that, unscrew the back of your airbrush, loosen the chuck holding the needle and gently pull the needle back and then forward again, until you feel some resistance. Stop as soon as you feel the resistance and re tighten the chuck. That should reseat the needle. Let me know how you go. Dan

@DansModelBench 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Liu Lou, My compressor is not a Tamiya one. I purchased a cheap compressor off ebay similar to this: www.ebay.com.au/itm/Air-Compressor-1-6HP-Pressure-Regulator-3L-Tank-for-Spray-Gun-Air-Brush-AS-186/272570804533?hash=item3f767c6935:g:1d0AAOSwYxBaA8CO Its a bit noisy and I keep thinking I should update, but the truth is, it does the job quite nicely. Unfortunately the airbrush hose doesn't come with the compressor, but you can pick them up cheaply enough on ebay too. The hose fittings have to be 1/4” on one end and - 1/8” on the other. Something like this: www.ebay.com.au/itm/Airbrush-Adaptor-Hose-1-8m-Braided-Rubber-1-8-1-4/261233040845?hash=item3cd2b3ddcd:g:xmgAAOSwoudW3Rv0 You might want to also think about a quick connect for your airbrush, so you can disconnect it for cleaning or storage. Something like this: www.ebay.com.au/itm/Airbrush-Quick-Release-Coupling-Disconnect-Adapter-1-8-Plug-Fitting-Part-HS941/232393323116?epid=13016027804&hash=item361bb8b26c:g:CIoAAOSw9~5ZV1HU If ordering online isn't something you are comfortable with, any hobby shop should be able to help you. Any compressor or hose that fits an Iwata airbrush, will also fit your Tamiya airbrush. Hope this helps, Dan

Dan's Van Diemens Land Model Bench thank you so much for answering my question!!! I just ordered Tamiya 74545 Spray-Work HG Airbrush III Super Fine and Iwata-Medea Studio Series Ninja Jet Single Piston Air Compressor, people say this compressor comes with a hose, I’m not sure it will fit that Tamiya airbrush or not... do you know about this? Thank you
@DansModelBench
@DansModelBench 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Liu Lou no problems. :) Yes your new Ninja compressor should fit the Tamiya airbrush just fine. Your new compressor maxes out at 18PSI which will be fine for model paint through your airbrush (don't forget to thin), but you might have to add more thinners then normal if you want to use it to spray Polyurethane primers like Vallejo Primer or Stynelrez. Alternatively use one of the lacquer based primers that are much thinner and will spray well, something like Alclad II primer or a good one I can recommend is AK Interactive: ak-interactive.com/product/grey-primer-and-microfiller/ Another excellent choice is Mr Primer or Mr Finishing Surfacer, which would both spray fine with your new airbrush if you thin them with some Lacquer based thinner like Mr Color Thinner or Tamiya Lacquer thinner: www.mr-hobby.com/en/itemList.php?cId=33 Remember to have good ventilation and wear a respirator with them as they can be quite nasty to your health. Have fun with your new airbrush and let me know what you think of it, after you've had a chance to use it for a while. Dan

So I bought one at this site www.lazada.com.ph/-i152100602-s180253913.html?spm=a2o4l.order_list.detail_image..797a3e17femnpD&urlFlag=true&mp=1 but unfortunately when it arrived it still did not fit the Tamiya HG III airbrush I bought. It says Standard BSP G1/8"-G1/4" Female 1.8m(6ft) Size. Am I missing some adaptor I should buy? please help.

Hi 3D, the hose you have ordered looks fine from what I can gather. Is the connection to big or to small to fit the airbrush? I tried finding a parts sheet for your model of airbrush online, but wasn't successful The only review I could find mentioned it had a 1/8” airline fitting on it, which should fit that airhose. Have a look at the parts sheet that comes with the airbrush and see what size it says the connector is on the airbrush. That should certainly help determine the problem and the best solution. Let me know what you find out. Dan

Actually the hose end is too small for the airbrush I bought. The manual that came with my airbrush is all in Japanese, and doesn't seem to mention the size, only the type of connector which is S type. I feel like the supplier made a mistake in the specification of their product, so I bought another one from a different seller, and I hope this time the hose will fit. My airbrush by the way is the Tamiya HG Airbrush III.

Hi Michael. No I got mine off a ebay seller called "simplybestprices". They shipped it from the US. If you are getting one, I would recommend the Iwata Super Lube for oiling the brush and also the Tamiya Spray Work Cleaner kit. Dan

What?!! You didn't watch 21 minutes of me talking! Actually my wife wouldn't listen to me for that long, so I guess that's fair. ;) I forgot to mention in my earlier post back, that the the airbrush has been a good airbrush, but one thing that is a pain, is disassembly, The piece that sits behind the trigger to limit travel is a separate piece in the Tamiya, where in most brands its screwed or riveted to the back assembly. Up shot is you find yourself having to use tweezers to help line it up. Fortunately the airbrush doesn't need to be disassembled all that often, as like the Iwatas they tend to stay clean. Just a heads up on that. Dan

Hi Dan, actually did watch the whole video, it was good mate, I'm just an impatient bugger. Thanks for the feedback, I am very keen to find a decent airbrush that will help improve my average painting skill level. I am looking forward to watching your other vids.

Thanks Michael. More videos on the way. I'll be doing a review of a kit, inbox review and build for the Kitmaker network. Kit was sent from the US last week, so looking forward to that. Let me know how you find the airbrush when you get one and post your thoughts here. Always interested in a second opinion and might be useful to some other folks who find this video. Dan

Thats very naive to think its made same place as Iwata just because things fit and looks the same.

There is growing evidence across the net that the Japanese made Tamiya airbrushes are made by BB Rich. I'll leave you to do your own research and if you find something out, I'd welcome your feedback here.

Could agree more with your comments there. Its my understanding that the importer of Tamiya went bust just before Christmas and we should expect another company to take over the Tamiya range. My local retailer was hopeful this might mean we get an expanded range of Tamiya products in the country and maybe some price adjustments. Time will tell. Dan
