Now that, Addam, is a real piece of engineering! As we'd say in the UK, it's built like the Forth Bridge!!! Great to see it come together and to hear your thoughts and very useful tips. I wouldn't have got the ancient Tamiya MFC either, looking forward to seeing this finished with your "modern" MFC fitted! Cheers! 😎👌👍

Thanks Mark, I am glad you enjoyed it. It is a beast of chassis and it may have as much hardware in it as the Froth Bridge does LOL!! I spent almost an hour just opening up hardware bags and getting them all sorted!! I like the MFC units but they are at least 3 times more expensive than they should be so this other unit is way better for the truck. Even if I wanted the MFC I would have probably got the Beier light and sound kits in it. Same price if not cheaper and the sounds can be programmed into it to get what you want. My wife picked up the paint for me yesterday while she was out so I can start working on getting everything painted and get the body assembled. It should look pretty awesome once it is all together! I will probably look at some other wheels and tires as I think these look a little too dinky on it but we will see once it is all together.

Yep bit's and parts and pieces is what it is Addam! My brother had one he put together with everything even the sound unit and it looked so nice he never really used it and it actually don't really work that great for trailing or crawling it's heavy stiff and bulky in every way so eventually he sold it. All and all it's cool though! Thanks for showing the radio grip bling too!! Have fun!

There are tons and tons of parts in there! I know I was sorting hardware for almost an hour! I was hoping it was going to go bag A, then bag B but it quickly started jumping around so I opened everything up and sorted it all! It will mainly be a display piece but will get out and drive once in a while. It should be a looker once I get done with it. I did get the grip fitting to the smaller wheel with no problems! Now I have 3 of them all with your grips on them!! I love the feel of them!!

Nice looking kit! I had something similar back in the mid 80s. It was called the Blazing Blazer. It came with the gearbox pre-assembled and was a really cool kit. Unfortunately it did not have a slipper clutch and whenever I hit a hard bump or had the slightest accident, it would strip the spur gear. It would make horrible noises until I replaced the gear, which I did at least three times. I finally sold it to an acquaintance (who never paid me for it, the schmuck). It wasn’t until years later that I realized that I had sold a unicorn for pennies (actually, nothing since I never got paid). I really wish now that I had held on to it. 😩

Oh no! That is terrible Steven! I don't even have words for that! That is kind of the Holy Grail truck for me and I can only imagine the sellers remorse you have, especially getting stiffed on the deal. I have the Ford F-350 high lift and It has to be one of my favourite builds ever and after adding some bigger 1.9" tires on bead lock wheels, 2 stage foams and a 1080ESC, rather than the 1060 I tried to start with I find it makes a very good trail truck to take out on walking trails. The 1080ESC was a must have as its so heavy it really needs the configurable drag break so you can set a good rate to stop it rolling away from you when you drive down steeper hills. When I first built it I thought it has going to mainly be a shelf queen, but I have found I actually run it as much as my TRX4 deluxe builder kit, now I am not saying I would use the high lift as a rock crawler. As I have rolled it more than ones as with bigger tires its more capable than I expected, but due the hard body it has quite a high centre of gravity so its quite easy to roll on a side hill.
@AddamsPlayground8 ай бұрын
I probably should have put the 1080 in there, I think I have one so I may swap it out. I am also thinking some bead-locks and slightly bigger tires will make it look better, the stock ones look a little puny on there! I will be fairly gentle with this one but I sure as soon as I get it out there I am going to try and drive over something! It is just what you do with a big truck! lol!!! Thanks for the tips!

It was a fun and entertaining build. Everything went together well, I did have words with the muffler bracket wobbly bit and mounting the rear bumper but overall it was prefect! It should be a good looking truck once it is all done! The price on Tamiya's MFC is just silly. I am sure it costs less than $50 for them to have that made, yet they want to sell it for $280-350 which is just silly! This light and sound unit will be more than enough to add some realism to it for me. I will drive it around stock first and see how I like it but I have some ideas for improvements over stock. I am not going to do any hard core stuff with it but I would like to be able to off road it without frustrations. I don't see much shifting going on either but it is cool to have it and would probably more worth it with a slower motor to take advantage of the great ranges.
@RCBirds8 ай бұрын
@@AddamsPlayground I heard what you said about the mufflers. Seems that they're a little more complicated on yours than on mine. But I have to admit, that I always drive screws with 2 mm or less diameter into the plastic before assembling the parts. And.... the mufflers were one of the pros why I bought mine. I found the idea of rattling because of the vibration motor very interesting. The prices for these're really awesome. If you want the hight lifts with the bigger wheels, like the classical version, the kit costs twice the money. Not sure why.And the prices also differ extremely between the shops. Some want 600 for the Ford, som only 400. Possible depending on how long these kits stayed in the shop. Da**, now I'm thinking of buying a second one. Looking forward for your drive experiences with it.

These kits are a journey, you may say now, that you want to keep it stock, but you will get addicted, and there is so much room for improvement. I have the tundra version, and I have taken it from mild to wild, and learned, and spent a lot along the way. 4 link, custom built chassis, custom built single speed low center of gravity gearbox, custom lights, 2.2 beadlock tires with wideners, custom 4 wheel steering, hand made swaybars, you name it, I have been down that road. One thing of note, is that without locked diffs, you will be surprised how easily the truck gets stuck, on anything less than a flat surface, there just isn't enough articulation. Also you did not mention that the optional Tamiya electronics have a vibration unit, to simulate engine vibration. Maybe that's part of the steep price. Have fun, these trucks will hold your attention indefinitely.
@AddamsPlayground8 ай бұрын
LOL, thanks for the warning. Thankfully I don't usually get to far down the upgrade highway on projects. I am pretty sure I will end up at least locking the rear diff as the little bench testing I did I can see what you are saying on how easy it is to unload one or both axles and then it is stuck spinning its wheels. I am planning on having a backup set of wheels and tires one hand as I feel the stock ones are a bit too tiny for the truck. I will give it a go stock and then see what needs to happen. I know GT Power makes a semi truck sound and light unit with the rumble motor included for way less than Tamiya's is. They have always been over priced with their electronics for some reason.

Nice clean job! Such a cool truck. This was the first real rc/kit i ever wanted. Went with the Mountain Rider instead. Yes once you build one of these Tamiya 3 speeds, you graduate and get your Rc builders degree lol. They're not the easiest. I agree the cool factor on these are up there with the best of them. Such an iconic truck.

I eventually got the Toyota Hilux High Lift a few years later. The Hilux body is one of my favorite bodies to paint and assemble! It is very rewarding seeing the final product! I have an original Tamiya Tundra High Lift and also a HG-P417 which is the clone of the Hilux. You can certainly appreciate the engineering that went into them just from the weight alone. However, in many ways they share some downsides with the MFC itself, namely they are very expensive and haven't changed much in decades. I would love it if Tamiya would do an update on these High Lift models to address some of the design flaws.
@AddamsPlayground8 ай бұрын
Very true, they are not modern by any means! It would be cool for them to design a metal framed crawler that is a bit more capable than clockwork engineered. I think they are most tradition and design over function many times, it both works for them and hold them back at the same time. It was still a great build and I enjoy all of its complexities! I just knew going into it performance is an after thought with them!

@@AddamsPlayground I appreciate the heritage aspects and the link back to the legendary first Toyota Hilux. I am also willing to sacrifice some performance just to get a scale realistic hard body. But at the same time, it would be nice to get some new axles with better ground clearance and improved suspension. Glad you got a decent servo for the steering. Mine is a little weak and that means the truck wanders around a bit when the tyres hit a rock (especially if set up for 4WS).

Looks good. These trucks are very time consuming. I made my own light kit using a Tamiya kit and other leds. Also, the only thing I hate is how noisy the gear mesh is. Wish it was quieter. I added bigger tires and aluminum wheels. Looks way better. Just need to paint it now.
@AddamsPlayground8 ай бұрын
There is a lot that goes into them for sure! It is a bit on the noisy side but I guess anything with more than a dozen gears in the trans is going to be kind of noisy! LOL! I may end up putting a second light controller in it as there is more lights on the truck than I have with this kit. I am going to need bigger receiver though, I only have a 3 channel in it currently. I did pick up a set of bead-locks and some bigger tires for it as the stock ones do look a bit dinky under it. I will give it a shot stock but I am pretty sure the bigger ones are going to go on it!

Sounds good. I use a spektrum 5 channel receiver, Tamiya esc with the stock motor. They are fast. I used Tamiya LEDs on all the grille, side and tail lights and used lights from from one of thos blue box light kits on ebay. Plugged them all in there and use a switch to turn them on and off if need be. I use a 6 cell 1800mah nimh stick pack to power it. I use the Treal multispoke wheels since they are weighted and RC4WD tires of your choice. The noise all comes from the spur and pinon gear. Put alittle grease on it.@@AddamsPlayground

Im looking for the next kit after the bt01 (which i will hopefully get in the next week) and considered one of these. If prefer the ford f350 but the chassis are the same anyway. Is it worth the money and would you say it needs the lights (that aftermarket setup you got) to really make it stand out?
@AddamsPlayground8 ай бұрын
If you enjoy building then you will love it. It is much more of builders kit than a performance truck. I am sure it is fairly capable but it is not one to take out on the rocks and run or bomb around in the yard at top speed but more if a tootle it around and appreciate the real scale looks of it and all the mechanics of it. If that type of stuff is enjoyable for you then it is definitely worth it. They are not cheap kits but there is 4 normal kits worth of hardware and at least two kits worth of parts in there so it is somewhat justified. I would say a light kit for it is needed. The sound kit part is neat but certainly not required, it does add to it but the lights are kind of a must have since it is so scale looking,
@dannyseville25438 ай бұрын
@AddamsPlayground I think you have just convinced me then haha. On the scale, how big is it next to something like tt02 with an average shell? If its still 1/10 on what is a beast of a truck, I imagine it's pretty big?

@AddamsPlayground8 ай бұрын
Thanks! It should be a pretty sweet looking truck once it is all done. The grease I used in the diffs is some from Traxxas, it is their high performance grease #TRA5041. It is a good bit stickier than the normal kit grease. In a normal buggy or truck it is able to really tighten up the diffs. In this big honking beast it helped but they still spin rather freely. Mor than likely I will end up locking at least the rear diff with the pin but I will give it a try like it is first.

Sick kit man. This was my first kit back into rc as an adult 2 years ago. I now also have the hot shot 2 blockhead and turbo scorpion and I love them but the hilux is my pride and joy and was the most rewarding build. Also the most difficult and lengthy. Can you get a more 80s looking 4x4 than this! It's just gorgeous. And that surf board 🔥 Can't wait to see your final build mate. What's the name of the alternative light kit you're using? Does it also include the vibration? This causes the truck to shake a little during engine start up and when idling. Cool idea for added realism imo.

This one does not have the rumble unit on it but they do sell one. You can find them mostly on eBay and some other online retailers. They have a few more features like the rumble motor included with it but they cost anywhere from $280-350 so it is very over priced. for $120-150 you can get a HW1080 ESC, an upgraded motor and a light and sound controller and do everything the MFC can do, some even have the rumble motors.
