I've had the Midnight Pumpkin since around 1989, I can't remember exactly. :-) I actually still drive it the way it was delivered back then, only the mechanical controller was replaced with an esc and the body mounts were replaced with metal ones, everything else is original, including the engine. The small springs on the gearbox have been missing for almost 30 years. It always made a nice bang but nothing was damaged, the plastic of the guides is stable enough. I think all the mods improve the chassis, but completely take away its characteristics, which is why the model is so much fun.
@PeteWylieRC8 ай бұрын
Hi there. Hey that's impressive that your truck is mainly still original. I know what you mean about the character of it as standard and I have got another one which is pretty much stock. The gearbox banging up and down when the springs break does annoy me though so I have fixed that on all of mine. Many thanks for your great feedback. Very much appreciated 😁👍

I have done the AMPRO suspension mod for my lunchbox, it’s a very good fix for the steering for this car. I have also put a brace across the front shock mounts, also bought a bulky wheels bar which is awesome and the fifth shock that you just described, so I have five oil filled shocks. Don’t you just love this van? Thanks for your video, great stuff.

Hi Pete - this is such an interesting and informative video - great stuff mate! I think it is great to pass on what you know about these kits, I find it very helpful, as I'm sure many others will too. Great theory about the 5th shock mod - sounds very plausible. Oh, and massive congrats on the 500 subs milestone - your videos have inspired me and I wish you all the best with your channel - all the best from your mate Mark! :))

Hi Mark. Many thanks. Yeah it took longer than it should have to do this as I had to rerecord a lot of the voiceovers due to that thing I was telling you about with the GoPro. Still not sure why that is. I do think that it works better with the 5th shock mod but there probably isn't much in it as it's a bouncy truck anyway. Nobody has got the comedy reference about the theory that is mine (ahem) yet. Yes 500 subs at last. I was hoping to release a video to celebrate but nothing ready at the mo. Been doing a Mazda 2 shell for my M05 today. I'm just trying to help you out by watching the advert at the start of your video but it's going on and on! Thanks for your kind words. I'm a bit slow at getting these videos out but I get there eventually. There will be more from me at the usual sporadic rate! I have already had some celebratory beers. Just need another 500 and I can maybe earn a few quid. Not too bothered though because as you know I mainly do it for my own amusement and the jolly KZbin banter. Enjoy what remains of your hols mate 😀

@@PeteWylieRC I had a lot of trouble with my GoPro - but found a solution to all the problems - go to the gopro site and download the latest update for your camera, stick the folder in the root of your SD card and turn on the camera- it took mine about 20 minutes to update, but after that everything was fixed! Its supposed to update from connecting it to your PC and the Quik app - but trust me - it doesn't work! As for the ads, thanks for watching, but don't worry about getting any money, after the first day of ads I earned 14p!!! :D Waste of time unless you get millions of views - if it stays like this I'll turn ads off - as you say, I'm only in it for the crack! 7:21 is the part I wanted to reference people to in a video I am working on Pete. I used the Ampro brace but you make a good point about the 5th shock mid 👍🏼 The series you did on the LB was very helpful to me when I first looked at getting one of these as I didn't have one as a child.

Hiya Damian. Yeah I still think that there is something in my theory (the theory that is mine and belongs to me, ahem) but I think that the gains are probably marginal as this is going to be a bouncy truck regardless. I wish I'd reviewed some of the footage before I carried on with this because I hadn't realised how much noise from what I was doing was coming out really loud on the GoPro. Also the sound level on that GoPro was all over the place so I had a nightmare of an edit and had to re-voice various bits. Anyway, many thanks for your kind words my friend 🙂

Yes! Finally had time to catch up! Been looking forward to this. Ohh, Pete, that was a thorough review! So excellent. Enjoyed every second and loved seeing your mods. Excellent job. And even though I didn't catch the comedy reference, I support your theory (which is yours and belongs to you). I think I actually made a note about it in one of my past videos with the Rising Fighter, that the shocks seem to go stiff with a brace in the middle. The last part, that the 3rd/5th shock mod is the best, I'm not sure about yet. For now I will support no theories on that one, but I would like to try out the theory of Steve (Shen RC), with the fishing line mod some day too. Uhhhh, and there is Richie. Seems he is enjoying Tamiyas and the hobby room very much :-) Sitting here home alone with Karma and Silje, and slowly starting to warm up to the idea of liking cats :-)
@PeteWylieRC5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mikael. I know what you mean about finding time to watch all the vids but thanks for watching this. I did try to include as many things that I learned about the Lunchbox with the previous one. Yes good point about the fishing line suspension mod that Shenlonco did. I haven't tried it and my brain is struggling to work out if it's better. I can't remember if you have one of these. You must have being such a Tamiya fan but I don't remember seeing it. Ah yes the cats are not necessarily a great help with this hobby as they do like to chew aerials and knock things off the desk but they are good company. As I've said before, we don't have kids and so the cats get all our attention and can get away with anything. Glad that you are getting on with yours ok. You do have to throw them out of the hobby room sometimes like if you've got a load of tiny stickers cut out on the desk. Hope you're having a good weekend. There is a food festival in town so we are just off to that. I'm not too interested in the food but the local breweries will all have stalls 😁🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

Thanks Pete. This will be very helpful when I get round to building mine. I like the look of the Abro Steel and Sugru. I haven't heard of them before. Where did you get them? How easy is the Sugru to remove if one of your led's die ? I will do the lexan strengthening/anti rattle to the body post holes. Great tip. I opted for the Ampro trans brace purely because I thought it would be quick, easy and cheaper than the 5th shock, but the 5th does look better. I will refer back to this when I start my Lunchbox. Hope you had a good Easter break mate : )
@PeteWylieRC5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Derek. Hope this is useful. The videos coming up will explain more. I found Abro Steel at a motorist shop. Sugru is internet but you can order it from Screwfix. Sugru can be peeled of and also cut with a knife so it it's possible to change the lights if they break. On my old Lunchbox the Sugru for the back lights detached by themselves and I had to superglue them back on. Anyway have fun when you do build this. Hope you've had a good Easter and all is well with you 😀

Great video 👍 and some great tips. I’ve yet to get a lunchbox as working on a rally nova and my DT-03 barmy buggy you helped me pick the right beetle shell 🙏 for. Some good tips that I will come back to 😎 but do you think the upgraded servo saver (Tamiya 51000) is a good idea on the lunchbox? I’m going to use it on my DT-03 build as I’ve the blitzer beetle wheels on it 🍻👍
@PeteWylieRC3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Glad this was helpful. Yeah the steering on the Lunchbox is rather vague so it could be helped by that hi torque servo saver. I put one on my Blackfoot recently which made a big difference. Probably not such a difference on the lunchbox because of the lack of weight on the front wheels but worth a go. Definitely good on the DT-02 and DT-03. Many thanks for your great feedback 😁

Hey Pete, what paints do you use on the wheels?? The TS Tamiya paint?? Krylon??
@PeteWylieRC2 жыл бұрын
Hi there. I don't tend to paint the wheels because all of my cars are runners and I worry about the paint chopping off. The ones that I have done I sanded the wheels then used plastic primer and then automotive paint. I'd have thought that the TS paints would be ok too. Certain plastics you can dye and I did it successfully on Holiday Buggy wheels. The advantage of using dye is that it penetrates the plastic so it doesn't just chip off. Not sure if the Lunchbox wheels are the right plastic. Maybe I need to experiment? Thanks for the question 😁

I find the turning circle really large, is your steering modified at all?
@PeteWylieRC4 жыл бұрын
No I don't have any modifications to the steering. The turning circle should be quite small at slow speed but quite big while you are on full throttle because all the weight is on the back wheels. You need to brake and shift the weight to the front to spin it round. If the turning circle is big when it's running slowly then there might be something wrong with your set-up.
