There were only a handful of kids on the tiny Army base I grew up on. The moment I bought myself a Grasshopper, with hard-earned porch-sweeping cash, (I was 8, and not trusted with a lawn mower lol), the Colonel's kid, Lee, was given an RC-10, and wiped my little buggy clean on the makeshift track we had built. Seeing this, some of the local Atusa's (Korean Army soldiers), took it upon themselves to make my Grasshopper a rocket ship, donating a 540 motor and electronic ESC from Novak, and taught me how to drive the _right_ way. I wish I could pay those guys back, for one of my fondest memories. Lee, if you're reading this, I'm flipping you off, lol

I got one for Christmas when I was 12 years old. If you superglue the holes in the wheels it will actually float in water. A few years later I purchased an Associated RC10 1/10 scale 2wd buggy and started racing. After that I went to a Losi XX buggy. Those were fun times and definitely a lot cheaper than the big toys I build today.

The Lunchbox is one among many classic R/C vehicles, I grew up wishing I could get. I saved up my money as a kid (it took me 6 months!) To finally get my dream truck: the "Midnight Pumpkin". Back then, you had to assemble the entire vehicle, and that makes the whole process more enjoyable, as it creates anticipation, pride in your build, and attention to detail. Most people I saw who got the Midnight Pumpkin, painted it black, like the box art. I painted mine a pearl white, and painted the wheels a light blue, to match the blue flame hood decals! It turned out gorgeous! I got a lot of compliments on it. I don't know if the kits are still the same, but one of the things I really liked about the Midnight Pumpkin was that the body was not msde of the flimsy, clear plastic bodys. While the clear plastic ones were extremely light, they were also very easily damaged, scuffed, or otherwise destroyed. The Midnight Pumpkin's body was a hard, thick and rugged plastic that could take a beating. As much as I loved the paint job I had done on my Pumpkin, she was no "hanger queen". I put her through the ringer and had a blast the entire time I owned her! She got some battle damage over the years, but I think her scars made her even more beautiful! I loved that truck.

Definitely cool. A real handful to drive too which is part of the fun. It magically seems to be more stable off road than the Hornet and Grasshopper which are half as tall, though. I guess the big tires soak up some of the bumps because it will go over some stuff like gravel just fine whereas a Hopper will sometimes take off and land facing a different direction or just traction roll. It's in just the right place between good and bad IMO. I love Hornet and Grasshopper but I find they can lack versatility on some surfaces where the Lunchbox will happily keep going. I love them stock but I have a highly modified one too with DT02 front suspension and 4-link at the rear. A bit pointless maybe but this hobby is about having fun and I really enjoyed making it handle better, it was satisfying. And me heavily modding one doesn't prevent people having fun with stock ones so it's win/win. Will always be one of the coolest looking RCs ever made, too.
@rexrcs3 жыл бұрын
Valley! whats up! thanks for the conversation, we need more of these. you hit the nail right on the head, I actually wanted to discuss more about the hornet to lunchbox experience I had, but I decided to make that possibly a seperate video MAYBE, I was not expecting much from the lunchbox after having high hopes for the hornet, and then I experiencing what I did, which was not very impressive, and fun only because of the very same reason that makes driving the hornet daunting to me. EXACTLY as you said, the hornet on almost all surfaces that arent flat, will randomly pick itself up and end up in a totally different and unprovoked position. given that experience it made me have even less desire to open the lunchbox, however I think you are also on the money regarding the tires, the bumps that it must be soaking up and dampening when it hops has to be the reason it is night and day from the hornet? what do you think? I orginally was under the impression that the solid axle rear would be great fun in the sand, however the hornet in my opinion, in its form that i have it, is terrible and I do plan to fix that and make it aceptable to myself eventually. I think I love the lunchbox, but I sadly do not love my hornet.....yet
@ValleyRC3 жыл бұрын
@@rexrcs I like to drive my Grasshopper on the sand but only if it's smooth sand, otherwise it just loses composure. It's pretty good on short grass and very smooth tarmac but anything other than perfectly smooth and it will tend to start rolling. If the rear end steps out just a little, it will tumble over itself most of the time, rather than the rear end sliding. For some reason, the Lunchbox just seems a little more stable and versatile. I resisted getting one for ages because people told me to expect the same experience as the hopper but it's definitely a better all rounder in my experience.

Late to the party, I know... But to contribute, I just want to say that my favorite part of this kit, and any Tamiya kit, is the building experience. Especially as a kid, with Dad's tools in hand and my feet dangling from our too-tall kitchen chairs, I felt like Oppenheimer putting together a world-changing device, something the masses would never understand. Since I paid for my first Tamiya, a Grasshopper, with my own hard earned Won (born in Korea), I took special care to get everything right, the box art my inspiration while I carefully tightened every Phillips head with my child's hands. If I could have as much fun doing what the driver of the box art Grasshopper was having, my investment would be realized. Boy, I was not wrong! Now an adult with some spending cash, I'm able to go back to my beloved Tamiya models and build them the way I want, with FPV cameras, flight controllers and LEDs, but it's still all about the build - crank the chair all the way up and let those feet dangle!

When I was 10, my uncle and I used to do so much together! He'd take me to Toy's R Us and we'd buy nerf guns and have a war in the car park, he'd take me fishing in the very early hours of the morning and we'd catch massive carp and take photos of us holding them. We'd go to the woods and fly rc airplanes, helicopters and drones around. But by far my favourite thing was when we went to the massive field with a skate park and drive around his rc cars! He had a fair few of them that he had built and he used to let me have goes on them! He had this big rc open wheel race car which was insanely fast and skiddy, a smaller one that ran on petrol which went at least 30mph, but by far my absolute favourite one he had was the Lunchbox. At the time, it was just plain white without the wheelie bar, but I loved it more than the others because of how beefy and crazy it was to drive around! I remember the day my uncle bought himself a bigger, more monstrous rc truck, and he gifted me the lunchbox! I was ECSTATIC! He'd painted it and attached the wheelie bar, I was all set to have the time of my life with it! I played with to for a good couple of years, but one day I took it too far and one of the wheels fully broke. By that point there was no fixing or replacing the damages, I was heartbroken. I recently was cleaning out my bedroom and I found the old broken down Lunchbox in a box under my bed. I remembered all the amazing memories and decided I needed to relive them. I went on amazon at 4am in the morning and bought a Lunchbox kit that arrives this Monday, and I cannot tell you how excited I am to finally play with it again!

Great video. I’m just getting interested in RC. I’m thinking of getting this as a starter. What radio do you recommend for the lunchbox? Thanks.
@rexrcs4 ай бұрын
Congrats on entering a fun world! The linch box is a classic “fun” incapable toy that will bring loads of silly laughs, and building it allows a dynamic level you just dont get with ready to run vehicles. Radio? Depends, if youre looking for long term Id suggest a medium to high end radio that will allow you to further adjust future vehicles. However if we want to keep it simple I’d just get a $40-$80 radio for this one first time rc.

Awesome video Rex!!! I never liked those back in the 80's, but now, I find those trucks a bit intriguing (The Lunchbox & Midnight Pumpkin). I never owned one but my wife wants the Midnight Pumpkin, now I think I might join her!!!

Bob! my wife enjoys watching my farm king run around because she says its super cute bombing across bumpy surfaces, I made the mistake of getting her a fire dragon and she couldnt care less for it, she wants more toy like enjoyment go figure. when her and I use to rc back when we dated, she was an excellent nitro 1/8 buggy driver, but here she is, telling me she likes the cute ones lol. Id say to go ahead and grab those kits for you and your wife! as you can see even 20 years later you can sell them for almost what you paid, its like a piggy bank you can play with and learn from and share!

I love these lowly Tamiyas because they're low performance. So low that I don't expect anything, except that they work and hopefully don't break. Since I don't expect anything, I'm pleased with what they do, and I can relax and (gasp) have fun. High performance = high expectations, and when those expectations aren't met, high stress. Relax, drive a Tamiya, have some joy in your life again.
@rexrcs2 жыл бұрын
dude, that is exactly it! especially now that Ive been going to the track with faster and faster cars, Im getting stressed, as fun as it is to bring a fully adjustable car to the race track, its more fun to just play without worrying about suspension settings or tire temperatures, you'll see, Ive got a farm king video coming

Are there 2 versions of the rc im not that good on rc's. My uncle bought one yesterday and when i looked it up on the internet it told me that it was realesed in 1987 *not sure* and they stopped selling it in 1995. It actually doesn't work it won't pair to the controller idk why it just keeps beeping
@rexrcs2 жыл бұрын
hi! congrats in the new rc! there are three versions of this lunchbox that I know of, a kit form, a ready ti run form, and a semi assembled version. without knowing what your setup is, it will be hard to know your issue, but if youre willing buy a new solution, a modern controller and receiver system goes for about $80 canadian nowadays, or much less from amazon. they did stop selling the lunchbox, but later reintroduced it as a re release

Hey ! If it isnt the lunchbox king himself! Welcome ✋! I want another one!
@cw-01creations463 жыл бұрын
@@rexrcs Rex my man, you should build one from scratch replacing the plastic parts that will break as soon as you look at them with aluminium parts (bodyposts), add a 5th shock or the rear axle brace, don't forget the front brace that fits on the front inner wings or the tops of the suspension posts, if you're sticking with brushed then I would suggest a 15t 540 motor and a 60a brushed ESC or if you're going brushless then you have the choice of anything because both setups will make your Van move quicker than the standard 27t motor you get with the kit. I have a brushed 17t Surpass Hobby 540 in two of my Creations and they make the cars get up and go. My latest build has a 35t in it but then I put that in for a reason to which I will explain in the video when I film it tonight at work. But Yes, the mighty Lunchbox is number one. It is in a class of its own 🥇 I have a Van that I replaced the chrome front panel with a Pumpkin front panel and built it with spikes sticking out of the sides that replace the side bumpers, no rear bumper but gold ball studs and a 8t 4600kv brushless combo. Oh boy, that thing gets abused regularly and still comes back for more. And then there's the Pickups I built. I always wanted a Lunchbox Pickup so I made my own. Van. Pickup. Convertible. Double Cab. The Lunchbox is King 🥇😎👍🍻🤓👌

@@cw-01creations46 Are you on facebook? I might have seen some of your work in Tamiya or lunchbox group? yes, i saw pete wylies video also on the fifth shock and I would do that for sure!, I think ampro has a bunch of the replacement parts youre talking about in sintered nylon and not aluminum, however Id consider either. I would love to try a body mod project such as youve done but i would need a few of them first lol I cant bring myself to mod this one or make it faster, its quite fun as it is I love it!
