I was buying broken Tamiya Porsche 959 cars on eBay. I would just combine all the parts so that I could build one car. However, I ended up with enough parts to build 3 cars. This was not my plan. I have all kinds of parts. I was buying these cars about 4 years ago. However, you can not do this today. Broken cars and even the parts are just super hard to get. I do not have an original unbuilt kit. I do wish that I did. I do have two original bodies, I even have original tires and wheels. I do agree, that this car and the Bronco are probably the most wanted Tamiya cars. I used to work at a hobby shop. I just could not afford to get one of these cars, but I really wanted one. I think it is great that I finally found the chance to actually have get this car.

I had a new in box Porsche, was never going to build it, I built it over the covid lockdown period, and I agree with you it’s an epic car, I always wanted it as a kid but could never afford it, so when one came up for sale some years ago I pressed the go button, it was awesome to build as well, even back then the designed it in modular form, classy highly engineered piece of kit.

I had the Grasshopper when I was a kid in the 80's!! Loved that little car. I can remember writing and sending off for it and waiting for UPS to send to the house. built this with a buddy of mine sometime in the early 90's. took us a few days, early childhood was amazing with this car, what an amazing machine . I do remember the axel split and the 4wd shaft snapped after a couple of years, but we taped it together. wish i kept it the 959. thinking of building the same with my son today.

I can still remember seeing the promo 959 video playing on loop on a little portable TV in my local Beatties store. I would stand and watch it forever... managed to pick a 959 up about 10 years ago, but a few things are broken and I just cannot find parts. I might just rebuild it and put it on the shelf... this is one I sincerely hope they re-release, maybe just with less insane dampers? Nice video.

I also had one of these, and loved building it, as at that time, it was like nothing I had ever built before.... As much as I loved this unit, the one draw back, was it was 1/12 scale.. and if it was not on clean pavement, the thing would bounce all over the place, the faster you went, and the more you push it past that threshold, , the higher the risk of rolling it.. The flat slick tires for it, gave it a neat look, but couldn't run those, as it made it even worse to handle... Please do not get me wrong, I miss it, and loved to just look at it... I suppose, stock, out of the box, and a stock motor, matches it just fine for playing around in the street or empty parking lot, but to throw any measure of performance at these units, I wouldn't do it, as it will only disappoint you... I machined a set of 4, aluminum rims for it, and glued a set of foam tires on, and took it to my local indoor carpet race track, and that was fun, but, even the stock motor, was cooking hot, LOL.. I wish I still had that unit.. The cleverness of the front and rear suspension and the shocks was a great education and was the first time I learned about the damper oil foaming up, and volume displacement, when I asked a guy, what the point of the little chunks of tubes on each shock damper was for... As I was distracted with the idea, that the tubes were to fill the shocks with oil through them, yet, the instruction didn't show that you fill them through the tubes... great car, just hard to keep straight and heavier power.. Here is what kills me... I sold mine for $50 bucks, USD... LOL.... OUCH!!!!!!!!!

Use a hole punch to create some circles to repair the body holes. Apply the circles from the inside, use a cotton bud to wedge them in then go with a little glue. Then you can use wet and dry to smooth the outside edge. Had to do a similar repair before and this worked well.

I grew up in Toronto Canada and I only ever saw the Rothman's version. Although the friend of mine that had one never put the decals on his, it was just painted all blue (no masking was done on it either) Fragile? my friend would bash with his, jumping off curbs, sewer grates, grass edges, not to mention at the time there were lots of houses being built. Yes he broke stuff, but I broke stuff on my Blackfoot too. (I was 11 years old too) IT was the fastest in our group because we all had stock 540's and it had the Technigold! Thanks for the video! Great work again mate. What great car to show. I wasn't aware this car was that good. Also the steering didn't seem that good on the bench, but on the road, I was shocked to see how nimble it was. Thumbs up man!!

The chassis design is very close to the real thing compared to most other kits in the 80:s... Just look at that suspension, beautiful!

Awww what an awesome video! It’s truly awesome to see your passion for the 959. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video of one running before, everyone is normally too scared to drive them :) It looks like the acceleration is really swift for a car of its age, wonder what it’s like with the 8v pack?!

Glenn I built one of these for my younger cousins birthday back in the day, they went like a rocket, handled really well and imho was the fastest tamiya out the box at the time , I remember the front suspension being really fragile for some reason !? ...Either way a very underrated kit imho.

the spring mount/body mount crack... and yeah, good luck finding replacement parts. Mine is just sitting on the shelf with a broken front body mount and rear spring seat.

I came across one of these at a yard sale. It’s about 70% compete. Always wondered what it looked like all in one piece.

I will be looking for an NIB 959 this year, so here’s hoping, my original one is now perfect apart from needing a shell so I think it’s gonna be an expensive year but these cars are very special to me as I built my original one with my dad and being unable to work because of heart issues, he and my mother must have really struggled to afford this for me, they were not a cheap model when new!

If I'm not mistaken they gave two sets of tires for that kit one for on-road and one for rally.

This was something else on this channel :) I had one 959 when i was young, but i sold it when the Celica came out. As i faintly remember it was not a good car. I would buy one if they re released it on a MF-01X chassis

Glen are those front wheels the white ones painted yellow? The rears seem solid yellow but the fronts have white peeking through the holes as if the have been painted.
