Hello and welcome to my top speed test of the re-released Tamiya Subaru Brat on the updated ORV chassis. Hopefully, before you see the run you will have a guess at how fast you think it will go!
The Brat is fitted with ball bearings and a Tamiya Torque Tuned motor, has the high speed gearing option (19T pinion gear) and is otherwise completely stock.
I'm using the Tamiya TBLE-02s speed controller and a Turnigy 3000mAh NiMh battery.
About the Tamiya Subaru Brat 1/10 scale RC model
Tamiya brings back another R/C classic with this Subaru BRAT. Longtime fans will once again experience the nostalgia of their childhood and beginners can enjoy the easy operation of this colorful off-road truck.
High-quality 1/10 R/C assembly kit of the Subaru BRAT
2WD chassis as used for The Frog
4-wheel independent suspension
Front coil springs suspension
Rear alloy oil shock suspension
Updated steel dog-bone driveshafts
3-piece beadlock wheels
Comes with two body shells one in ABS and one in Polycarbonate
540 stock 27 turn motor included
About the Subaru BRAT
The Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter was created by Subaru in the late 1970’s from their earlier 4WD station wagon model for the US market. Powered by a flat-four engine ranging from 1.6 to 1.8 liters in displacement, this pickup had the unique feature of having jump seats welded to the truck bed, which allowed it to be imported as a car instead of a truck. One of the car’s more famous owners was former US President Ronald Reagan, whose red BRAT is restored and displayed at his former residence in California.

I've got one I bash around all over. Currently tinkering with the front axles to get the wobble out, mine does 24mph but it's not got the high speed gear in but it wheel spins all day its great fun. Was thinking of making it crazy fast as the fun of these is the loose rear end. Great vid

Goodness - 24mph! I guess the Torque Tuned motor had the grunt to pull that tall gearing. Back in the early Nineties I used to race my Pumpkin against my mate's Brat, and on smooth surfaces he always won. We both had the same motor, so we reckoned it was due to the Pumpkin's giant wheels soaking up some of the power, gearing, and, to a tiny extent, aerodynamics. Brats are innately fast!
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC Жыл бұрын
Not bad, eh Del?!?!?! Surprised me, that's for sure! I must have one of the better Torque Tuned motors! Ahh, I reckon the Brat had the upper hand against your Pumpkin for all the reasons you said, each only small but they add together... but the re-re Brat has 3 gearing options that the original didn't have. Hence the 24 mph today! Cheers, mate! 🤗👌👍

My Subaru Brat is one of my favourites, mind you, I had to dial down the steering rate a bit on mine. Great that this ORV chassis comes with the gearing ratios for you to choose from, should give the dynamic duo some extra fun off road too 😊😊😊now Mark, don’t break it 😂😂😂as usual, lovely to see you and the video was awesome 😊😊😊best wishes to you and the family 😊😉😊

WELL, I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY.!.!.! You've gone & done it.! I'm just going to come straight out & say it... I was wrong about them... I LIKE TAMIYA RCs.!! 👍 👍 After watching yours & other channels who keep banging on about Tamiya RCs, I got myself a TT01E MAN Truck a few months ago.... And I was pleasantly surprised.! (I've been running it brushless & so far, no problems at all).! I'm now waiting for my third Tamiya to arrive, an M06 to go with the M05 I got a few weeks ago.! (I mean, I've got to have a rear wheel drive M chassis to go with the front wheel drive haven't I... It would keep me up at night if I didn't.!) I'm now trying to decide what my next Tamiya will be.! (before my latest has even arrived) 😂 This is going to a bad year for my bank account.!😉 😉 😂 😂 But a good year for my RC addiction.! (I have around 40+ RCs of all types & sizes from most manufacturers, but I was always a bit put off by Tamiya because of the bushings, plastic gears, pogo sticks etc.... Well it seems that I was wrong to believe they weren't as good as other RCs, they're just... Different, that's all... They're also cheap enough so you can reasonably factor in the cost of oil shocks & bearings... The gears actually hold up to brushless power fine 😲🤯).! 😉 Seriously, thanks mate.!! You guys know what you're talking about & are endlessly helpful.! Now... Which one.? They have sooooo many.! I'm thinking Blitzer Beetle? Racing Fighter.? Oh.. Maybe another on road.?.. A Lancia 037.? No.. No... An XV-01.!! Hmmmm.. I quite like the look of the TA03.!! Actually, I really like the King Yellow.!! ... ... ... I know, I'll get them all.! 😉 😉 😂 😂 Yeah, that's the plan.! ... ... ... Stay safe out there mate & the very best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🙏 ❤️ 📻 🕹️ 🔋 🚗 🚖 🚕 🚔 🚚 🚙 🚘 🚓 🚒 🚑 🚐 🚎 🚤 🚁 🛩️ 👍 👍 👍

Well yeah I am very happy after reading this message Alan! Thanks very much! 😁😁 I'm so happy if I played even a very small part in your Tamiya conversion, but at the same time I'm also sorry about the addiction! It's impossible to cure, don't you know?!?!?! 😅 I agree with you about the downsides of many Tamiya kits, but yes, they can be easily and cheaply upgraded most of the time. There is just "something" about a Tamiya that gets to you and makes you smile! It's worth it just for that alone! Those ideas you listed for the next kit are all superb in my opinion... but if you do go for an XV-01 you will be totally blown away by the driving experience, trust me! But yeah, get 'em all! Cheers mate and take care, best wishes from the Midlands! 🤗👌💙👊👍

@@MarkBryanRC Mate.. You will not believe what happened to me today.. Some bloke was selling his entire TT-02 type S collection, all fully built, hopped up, RTR & never driven. They each had a beautiful, really well painted rally shell on them with the appropriate wheels & decals, he even included the reference pictures he'd printed off to do them, he had 2 Ken Blocks (Focus & Fiesta) , a Velintino Rossi Fiesta & a Peugeot 308 Red Bull.. The auctions were staggered & I was bidding on each of them, I was really tempted to pull the trigger but I let the first 3 go, even though they only went from between £68 & £92 because the one I really wanted, the Rossi one was at £86.. 5 minutes before the bidding closed at 2pm MY EFFING POWER WENT OFF.!!!! I WAS APOPLECTIC MATE.!!! Literally hopping up & down, cursing & blinding like a proper nutter.!😂 Then I remembered my mobile, I shot upstairs to look for it, found it, dropped it down the side of the bloody bed, dug it out & was frantically trying to sign into Ebay but when I did I'd missed it by literally seconds.! I couldn't believe it.!! We've had really high winds today & our power can be vulnerable to trees here. The power had been dodgy all morning, the lights were flickering, my Ninja wouldn't work & the kettle was taking twice as long to boil & I remember thinking, "watch the bloody power go off today".. It came back on at 2:02... Just to rub salt in the wound.! It sold for... £86.!! Sigh... Ah well, there are another few dozen or so cars on my watchlist.. It obviously wasn't meant to be.. See what you Tamiya cultists have done to me Mark.!!! Before I realised there were all these Tamiyas being auctioned off my life was so much less apoplectic.! 😉 😉 😂 😂 Anyways, I maidened my M06 yesterday... What a sweet driving little car.! It's blown right past my expectations.!! I honestly wasn't expecting it to be so good.! It had me grinning from ear to ear.! I usually fit brushless systems to all my RCs except crawlers, quite often without ever bothering to drive them if they came brushed, but I thought I'd give it a run on the 21 turn motor it came with on a 3S lipo..(it can fit a 5000mah 3S flat pack..just)!! 🤯 👍 👍 👍 You know what, I don't think I'm going to change it.!! I think with it being rwd, it probably needs the smoothness of a brushed motor. I like that a fan can be screwed on right over the motor.!! 👍 I haven't GPSd it but I'd say it's easily in the high 30s.!! It handles so well too with the lovely Yeah Racing shocks on it, it's got a nice bit of lean & squat that I like to see & it doesn't get upset over the bumps.! I absolutely love it mate.!! I'm really looking forward to fitting a Mk2 Escort shell to it.! Anyways, apologies for the mega comment.. Thanks again for playing your part in my new Tamiya addiction.! 😉 😉 As always, stay safe out there Mark & the very best wishes from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🙏 ❤️ 📻 🕹️ 🔋 🚗 🚖 🚕 🚔 🚚 🚙 🚘 🚓 🚒 🚑 🚐 🚎 🚤 🚁 🛩️ 👍 👍 👍

Iol l said 17 like Rob but what a nice surprise! 24mph Mark very respectable! I had a Brat back in the day well it was my first tamiya but it was 380 6v power lol not quick at all but loved it! I was out on Friday with my rere Frog though with the 50t 18t gearing and a 21t motor and it was flying!!! The ORV is a fast thing! l only had a standard silver can in it at first and it still seemed fast! I remember back in the day when my Brat became my frog that was pretty quick, shame about the driver lol but yeah always quick down the main straight! It proves how gearing makes the difference! Off road its going to be a hoot Mark looks great too mate! Great vid guys. Cheers James.

That thing's possessed!!! 😮 What have you done to it Mark?! Im sure they're not meant to go that fast. The only explanation I can think of is the variation I've noticed with the torque tuned motors. Some are faster than others fresh out of the box...but yours may be an extra special freak motor.
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC Жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, I think you are right! I have no idea why it's so quick, but as you say and I too have noticed big differences in the performance of some Torque Tuned motors! It must be due to the tolerances when the timing is fixed at the factory. Glad it's a fast one, all the same! Cheers! 🤗👌👍

Delightful Mark!!! Gosh, that's a good 5mph more than I was expecting..... plenty of torque as well by the looks of it. Just goes to show how getting the gearing right makes all the difference. Handling looks spot on, and that green really pops. Your shell strengthening looked like it worked exceedingly well. Am I correct in thinking the Bratt and frog etc don't suffer the same gearbox issues as their big wheeled ORV cousins did? Hiya Mark. Oh wow I thought it would be about 16mph. I never speed tested mine but it didn't seem that fast although I would have been running it on grass and comparing it to the brushless ones. Tamiya for some reason makes slower cars now. The Brat are fun until you roll them, yours was handling well.

Yeah, strange how they've got slower over the years, Mal! This must be one of the better TT motors! Definitely gonna roll it on the grass but at least it's my basher body. Cheers mate! 😎👍

Tamiya is lightyears behind other r/c car manufacturers and the sad thing is… Tamiya isn’t ashamed of it.
@MarkBryanRC

I agree with you, Nick! But the thing with Tamiya is nostalgia and not performance, really. For us older folks, it takes us back to our youth and fond memories. If you love Tamiya, performance isn't the driving factor. They are just beautiful and iconic models. If you don't love Tamiya, they are irrelevant in this modern age!

wouw never would have guessed a torque tuned had that much in it, using 19/70 in my TT-02 atm but seeing this i might just go 25/64 (was afraid it'd no longer be capable of spinning it's wheels but....seems not that much of a problem :P)
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I guess I have one of the better Torque Tuned motors! If you have this motor in your TT02, I think it will overheat on 25/64! 21/70 is probably the sweet spot! 👍

@@MarkBryanRC expected as much so I have a fan ready to go in....once I figure out how to keep most of the debree out of the electronics (modded the dust cover to have filtered intakes to help cool already...and made the gril on the body functional in the same way :P) but the steering mod seems to allow it to shoot rocks and sand right in to the holes for the steering so....troubleshooting that first so I can pull more air then sand through it :P it's getting progressively better :P first test half the forest in the electronics, 2nd test little less, now I'm down to like a quarter of the forest :P and I pc modded the heatsync (by which I mean I put some actual thermal paste between the heatsync and the motor :P both now suddenly get a lot less hot ^^ heatsync actually taking the heat from the motor rather then...well I guess syncing in temperature which...helps?)
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you got all the bases covered there! Definitely gonna need some airflow! Getting there with the mods, only 1/8 of the forest and job done! The thermal paste is a good call and makes a huge difference. Good luck with your future endeavours!

@@MarkBryanRC just gave my 2nd chassis it's first test with a 25/68 gearing and damn...torque tuned delivers :P got a slimmer servo and re-pinned the cables to be the exact length I need to not have to deal with hiding the cables and mounted a 40mm 16000rpm fan between the motor and the receiver/servo. modded a 2nd dust cover by cutting out practically all forward facing surfaces and glueing a fine fan filter over the opening. after ~ 5 min of full throttle back and forth the motor is warm to the touch but not hot so I'm calling it a success :P also quite a bit more staitline speed >.>

Amateur as I am to this speed guessing stuff, I guess around 30KpH, then was dismayed that your guesses were way lower. But: Then it seemed I was pretty close after all! Bearings and Torque tuned!! Do you use LiPos too? Cheers!

I think we are all amateurs when it comes to this game, dude! Yeah we were way off the mark! 🤣🤣 Well done with your better guess! This was on a NiMh battery but I don't think LiPo's make a big difference on brushed motors. Many thanks my friend! 🙏😎👍
