Tamiya TT-02 Type-S Build Part 1 : Steps 1-13

Welcome to the first part of my Tamiya TT-02 Type-S build, where we complete the steps 1 to 13. The TT-02 Type-S is a fantastic 1/10 RC kit, and promises to be a good performer. But can I adapt it for rally use to make the most of the Tommi Makinen Lancer Evo body that I have lined up for it? It's going to be fun finding out. Hopefully, you might find a few hints and tips about building this Tamiya as we progress through the build stages!

Nice to follow along on these old builds of yours, Mark! I'm sort of watching them while also working, more like entertainment, he he... I still haven't figured what all the TT-02 variants are, except B for buggy, of course... Maybe S is for speed? That would be great, ha ha!

I started my tt02r ,I'm enjoying the build and this video. I was worried about the diffs having plastic gears but every Arrma and Hpi car we have with metal diffs has chewed them up . The 3s cars with plastic gears no problems ever . These tt02 cars seem very tough and you guys have proven that. I'm already looking at building another one. Rally car next time, your rally cars go great. Thanks for the video guys , learning heaps.

Hi Peter, firstly, I'm sorry you didn't get a reply earlier, I did type a reply but youtube seems to have deleted or removed it! This is happening more and more lately! :-/ I hope your build is going well, that is such a great kit. The plastic diff gears are fine, but the bevel gears on the end of the propshaft can slip if you go too crazy with a much more powerful motor. I'd keep to 13.5T brushless as a maximum. Oh yeah, you know I love my rally cars mate! :O)

Thanks, Kelvin. Yes, it is very confusing to begin with, I know. Good idea about a video covering the different Tamiya chassis - I will look into that, but I don't think I have all of the types to do a proper comparison, but I could use what I have got. I do try to outline the major differences when I do an unbox or build. You Tube is a great place to start, there are some very good channels that give a lot of information, but it will take time trawling through all the content to find out what you need. Nordic RC Visions has some great overviews of a lot of Tamiya chassis based cars, I recommend looking there for a start. The TT chassis series is an entry level 4WD range, the DF and TA is mid range 4WD and the XV and TRF are higher end - and the prices go up accordingly. Type S and Type R are more aimed at racing series and the - D is for a drift chassis. If I can help with a specific question you might have, I will do my best to help. All the best from Mark... : )

Nice one Mark. Looking good so far. You were saying previously that you can't change the wheelbase on this so no good for the Datsun 240Z as it needs the shorter one. Be good if you can confirm the wheelbase when you get to the point where the hubs are on. Rob must have the patience of a saint to hold the camera while you build all these kits. Either that or you are bribing him with beer. Seems like you both have a bit of a laugh doing it. Glad to see that you have used the half term wisely. Any plans this weekend other than doing more of this kit and drinking beer ?

Cheers Pete! I will definitely let you know the wheelbase, it really didn't change as far as I can see when I flipped the bottom wishbones. Yeah, Rob is amazing, well he has put up with me for the last 30 years so he can certainly last a 20 minute video!!! He doesn't drink like me, so saves me a fortune! Mark Bryan RC I’m going to make it a faster car and I’ve ordered some metal upgrades but what motor should I put in it. I watched the video where you soldered a 17.5t brushless into the neo scorcher but I never found the speed video. Was it fast and would the 13.5t version go faster?

Hi Dan - I haven't done a speed test on the Neo Scorcher yet, you have reminded me that I need to do that one this year! TBH the 17.5 isn't much faster than the Torque Tuned, you need higher gearing, but it is way smoother and the batteries last twice as long. My blue Scorcher with the 13.5 is a lot faster, but you still need to gear it up as far as you can, I have a 20T pinion and it will still pull more. Also, I'm using the TBLE ESC, which I think limits power somewhat. Fast enough for me though!

Mark Bryan RC yeah, I’ve got the high speed gear set aswell and I don’t think I’m going to change the esc because every esc I find there are cases of fire after short use, that throws me off but I think the 64spur with a 13.5 and 2s Lipo should be enough for high speeds. If not I’ll find the biggest pinion I can haha, cheers mate👍

Hehe - yes, something like that! Well, as you know, Alf is my son, and as a teenager he got a bit bored of filming his dad prattling on about toy cars! No, seriously, he is studying hard for his GCSE's (bless him) and doesn't have much time to spare - although he has mentioned doing some shooting with Rob and me in the summer holidays. Many thanks! As for your question, yes I often use automotive lithium or moly grease on my kit builds. It's so cheap and does a good job. When building the diffs you can pack them to the top with grease and they work a treat! Cheers!

loooved it, Mark! Especially the part where Mr. Brennan is laughing at you ;-) Great vid. Must say I also loved if because of personal interest (got a TT-02B XB and a TT-02B NIB so I've never built a TT-02). That BB26 was interesting in itself. I've always thought of that hole in the chassis as a reinforcement for the suspension mounts/shafts (an improvement compared to the DF-02 and other predecessor-chassis' that don't have it) but apparently it can be used for other things as well. Ohh, and I think I was one of the people asking about molybdenum - so I have another question: Why the ceramic grease on the spur/pinion then? Because the pinion is metal? Or because of the heat? I got some Tamiya kits that supplied the molybdenum for metal gears.

Very pleased that you enjoyed the video, Mikael, thanks for watching my friend. Hehe - Rob and I do like a bit of fun - it is a hobby after all, and nobody's life is at risk! Yes, the hole in the chassis has lots of adaptors for different suspension systems, you will find a different one for the TT-02B. I like the way these are designed to allow for different toe-in angles. As for the grease, yes I generally use my big tub of lithium-moly for most applications, I find it is fine on the pinion/spur too. However, as this kit comes with the two types, and Tamiya recommend the ceramic for the pinion/spur, I decided to use it. Tamiya doesn't give a reason, but I have read that ceramic greases are specially formulated for high pressure/high temperature applications. I think you made a good guess at the heat reason, as the motor will heat up the metal pinion, the diffs certainly should not become hot!

Hi Jason. From memory, you don't need much else! To add to your list, to do the chassis you need: ESC (I used the Tamiya TBLE-02s) Steering servo radio receiver (optional) alloy propshaft and alloy drive cups I think everything else is in the kit! Because I built mine for rally, I also got a set of Rally Block tyres.

Hi - no, you can use the alloy propshaft with the kit supplied plastic drive cups if you want.

Hello Marco - the grease that Tamiya supply with the kit is supposed to be enough to do the whole build. You should have enough in the kit. I always apply more because you can never apply too much grease! :)

Hi Tomas - no they are the same width my friend - it looks like the Type-S is wider because the suspension arms are longer, but they extend right into the wheels, unlike the standard version! All the best, Cheers! :)

Thanks for the great comment - and yes, the TT-02-S is definitely recommended by me, it's one of my favourites. It comes complete with the metal bearings, metal driveshafts and cups, and oil shocks - no need to buy them! I agree, the build is a big part of the fun of our hobby. :)

Mark I'm quite new to rc but can you comment on the use of Moly Grease. Moly grease information states not to use it on plastic because of its oil based compounds. Are Tamiya plastics different?

Hi Andrew, good question! Yes, I have read that there are types of plastic that will slowly deteriorate over time if treated with oil based products. However, as Tamiya include tubes of moly grease in some of their kits for application to plastic gears, I assume that Tamiya parts are unaffected by the moly. I have used moly grease in my kits for many years, and have not had a failure of the coated parts. But if you are unsure, there are many non-oil based grease products to choose from. 👍😊

Yes, I don't think you will have any problems without the o ring. It should be fine! All the best!

Hi Aaron - it's a no brainer, buddy! Go for the S kit and you get about £150+ of hop up parts included, it would cost over 3x as much to get a standard kit and add the hop-ups separately! Thanks for watching, and Seasons Greetings to you! :O)

Well, I can only speak of my own experiences, but here, model shops do not offer much help. But there is a fantastic community of people here on KZbin that will always help you if you ask - me included!
