This is my second & third attempt at a top speed test for the ‪@poorboysrc‬ Tamiya TT01 / TT02 Speed Challenge 2023, many thanks to Fil for laying down the gauntlet again this year. There are now 2 classes in this competition, one for brushless 2 & 3S LiPo cars and the one I'm entering, brushed motors and 7.2v NiMh batteries.
In this video I run both the Core RC 15T brushed motor and the Absima Thrust Eco 15T motor - can I break the elusive 30mph barrier?
Many thanks to my mate Rob ‪@robbrennanrc‬ for the help and filming of this speed run attempt. Also, many thanks to Craig ‪@theoagrc‬ for sending me the Schumacher Contact foam tyres and wheels, what a star! You can see how the TT02 does on the foam tyres at the end of this video. And finally, many thanks to Peter ‪@cw-01creations46‬ for donating the Core RC 15T motor, cheers, Peter!
See attempt #1 here: • Tamiya TT02 Speed Test...
My TT02 spec for this run:
18T Absima Eco Thrust brushed motor
Mtroniks Trident XT-12 brushed ESC
YEAH Racing alloy motor mount
ball bearings
oil CVA shocks
alloy propshaft
22/64 gearing

I know, I'm gutted, mate! I was so sure the 15 Absima would do the trick, the stats on the motors should mean it's a few mph faster! I tried a few more times off camera, but still no success!! 😭 Blimey, sabotage tyres!!! 🤣😜 Never considered that! 🤣 Yeah, they need to be warmed a bit before they grip. Well I've only got 2 motors left, already tried one and the other is in the post. After that it's gear ratio time! Take it easy, dude!

That was great to watch, Mark! Although not beating your PB, still got some valuable knowledge in the bag! I'm guessing between those motors, now you need to figure out which one has most RPM AND most torque, because you will need some oomph when you up the gearing. Ha ha, a bit more factors to factor in! I'm beginning to get nervous, as I noticed yours was a bit less stable in this run, I need to hurry get mine built as I realise I have never driven one before, I need to learn from scratch, ha ha... Have a great rest of the weekend there, mate!

Wow... puzzling for sure..... One thing I found in this video different and it may be why the speed has dropped with the faster motors or I am just dreaming it could be the reason because I wanted to see more speed for you guy's! I did notice the first run you powered your car with a awanfi battery and if I recall those were pretty good nimh packs.... could this be maybe the other battery is not up to the task of powering such low turn motors? I may be dreaming but you never know!...Mark running out the door now calling Rob with car and fully charged Awanfi battery! LOL!!! Never know
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC 11 ай бұрын
Hi Steve and many thanks for the thoughts! Yep I agree with you, that's why I did try the other battery, we did film it but I thought the video was long enough and it only did the same speed. Those Turnigy batteries and the Awanfi are the best I've got so that's why I'm using them. Many thanks again for trying to help, it really is appreciated my friend!
@ShenRC
@ShenRC 11 ай бұрын
Good to hear, strange the lower turn motors are not going faster? could it be the pinion gear is to big and it is not allowing them to get up to full rpm? maybe try a smaller one at least 3 to 4 teeth smaller maybe? I don't know what else it could be other than those are not the best of motors then? they don't make good brushed motors like they used to before brushless came out.. maybe try one of the associated 17T radon ones they have they used to be pretty good. @@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC 11 ай бұрын
Thanks again, Steve! We think alike, for sure! I did try with a simple test - the foam tyres are a much smaller diameter than the rally tyres so fitting them is a really quick way of dropping the gearing. But guess what, Steve? Every motor was exactly 2mph SLOWER with the smaller wheels?!?!?! I think that means they can pull higher gearing... We will see for sure when I start increasing the pinion size - stay tuned dude!
@ShenRC

Great run dude, but wtf man, why isn't a 15 turn motor faster than an 18 turn? Is it workmanship, is it materials or maybe quality??? I do hope your luck will change and you break that elusive 30mph threshold!!!! Are you using your best NiMh pack? Remember, the voltmeter is your friend for checking your packs, playing with timing on the motors does to, to a point. I use Contact foams on my SR with brushless power, do you know what "Shore" those tires (foams) are? Higher numbers are more firm and lower numbers are softer, I think. I guess we'll see what happens in the next video. ATB my friend!!!!

Hey don't sulk Mark, you are still winning the brushed contest unless there is one that I've not seen that beat you? So the foam tyres are better after a little warm up? I was determined not to spend any cash on this but I might get some. Do you know what they are or should I ask Craig? My only plan to beat you is to put even higher gearing in and one of those 15t motors which I do have already. I'm going to have another go with the brushless set before I convert to brushed anyway. The trouble is finding a flat and empty road or car park. Anyway an entertaining video to kick off my weekend. Cheers for now mate 😁

Craig ordered the foams for me so best to ask him. Good to know we will be competing and it all helps with the interest, I'm getting plenty of it here! It's gonna be close then because we have similar powerplants and gearing options - as we've already seen, a lot of it is down to being able to get the power to the road and to stay in a straight line!!! now i'm not that familiar with the motor's and such but could it not be torque related that the "faster" motor's are actually slower? at least how I see it in my head is that higher torque would result in less RPM lost because of resistance so maybe that's why the 18T matched 1 of the 15T's and beat the other? don't know the torque figures of the motors used but did notice that the tamiya torque tuned, GT's and the tamiya BZ's have a pretty big torque bump compared to most other motor's (most carson etc) where i can find the torque number it comes out to about 10-20 mnm (Millinewton Meter) the torque tuned and GT's claim 30mnm and the BZ's 49mnm. at least seeing these results and what I've heard left and right, RPM / T is only part of the story and the other part they don't like to talk about unless it's high :P or maybe due to manufacturing variation it's hard to make promisses..

You make a great point! I'm still trying to work it all out! From past experience (what little I have of it) that Core 15T went faster every time I RAISED the gearing, I was expecting it to get slower at some point but it didn't. But you could be right about the 18T having more torque and being able to pull that 22/64 gearing. I agree about the Tamiya specs, very misleading. The specs I can find for the Absima and Core motors are very sketchy, too. The numbers are definitely only part of the story. I think trial and error is the only way forward, fingers crossed I get it right! Cheers! 😎👍

How did you mounted the 15T? The TT02 Motor Mount just offers 16T , you justed used this?

The 15T is referring to the 15 Turn motor. The numbers on the motor mount are for the number of teeth on your pinion gear.

Still pretty good I think but I don't see why it's not going up on speed

Mark what if you take the rear wing off ?

I thought about that Darren but I'm sure it's adding to the stability! Might do that though later down the line when desperation sets in! Cheers! 😁👍

@@MarkBryanRC yes it adds stability I have an Audi A4 shell and when it has no wing it goes well done the straight but not so good on the corners lol also if you could run a lower shell might help also? I was also thinking take out the front diff to see if that helps as it will be taking some power also for a speed run. 😁

Hi Darren, yeah I've had the same experience as you with wings! I might take out the prop and front diff later and see how it drives - Cheers! 😎👍
