Now this was interesting!
We took our bone stock Arrma Granite Voltage - and tested it with the stock 20T motor, a 12T 550 brushed motor, and then finally versus a GoolRC 3900KV brushless setup!
We tested for overall speed plus bashability.
Honestly, the results were pretty interesting.
Parts used for this test:
- Hackmotor 12T 550 brushed motor: amzn.to/37XO4b4
- GoolRC 60A . 3900KV brushless combo: amzn.to/3mg4wss
- Dynamite GPS: amzn.to/37fQnqM
- ZOSKAY 35kg servo: amzn.to/3ab4FuU
- Double-sided tape: amzn.to/34awpMn
- I used a Spektrum controller that is junk. Don't use it, use this one instead: amzn.to/3a7NnP1
*Note: The provided links to the items recommended in this may be associate links. The great news about this: you pay the same price for the item, but I get a small kickback that helps me fund this channel!

The problem with the 12T is that remember you had to reverse the motor wires so you were running the 12T in reverse and those motors come with a set amount of advanced timing but when it has to run backwards your running the timing retarted, thus the slow speed if you had a reverse rotation 12T 550 it would go a bit faster you could also run bigger pinion and get more speed that way and it would probably run cooler ,I didn't read all the comments maybe someone has said this already but if not hope this helps.

hey man, I myself have done some testing & after some research. I've come to find out that lower turns doesn't always mean the motor would be faster. If you did a comparison of only 550 12t motors from different manufactures (which is slim these days), you'll notice the motors all have a different peak rpm@7.2 or 12v. At the moment... a budget friendly & well crafted motor that lives up to the performance of a 12t 550 motor in my opinion is the holmes hobby trail master sport. I'm currently using a Holmes hobby 21t trail master motor with a 25t pinion, it's noticeably faster & gives off less heat than the stock 20t motor. I plan to swap out the motor for 550 12t trail master motor when it becomes available.

If you use a 3650 brushless motor, you'll encounter clearance issues, which can be one reason your motor shaft appears too short. Its much better to use a 3660 instead. Not only will a A 3660 be longer for proper fit (60mm instead of 50mm) but it will have a longer shaft (17mm vs 15mm) and a lot more torque. My 3660 motor fits perfect with a bit of room to spare, the shaft is the right length, and it absolutely flies...

@@RoadsideRC Excellent video BTW! I used this video to help with my upgrades. For anyone who is looking at upgrading you could also use something like a 3660, 3300kv brushless motor (why 3300kv? for 3s Lipo of course ;) and a 19t 48p pinion from Robinson Racing. With the 19t pinion instead of 16t and a 3300kv motor it hits the same top speed of 29 mph (19t/16t = 1.19 * 3300kV = 3900kV equivalent). You didn't mention in your video, but I'm guessing your 20T motor was a 540? A 20T 540 and a 12T 550 motor have about the same rpm/KV so it makes sense that on the stock pinion the top speed is about the same. The 550 will however have a lot more torque meaning you can gear it up; use a larger pinion to increase top speed without the motor overheating as much as it may on a 540 if you over gear it.

Those ESCs are dangerous just letting ya know lol. I put the GoolRC 3660 3300kv 60amp esc into my Arrma Granite mega v3 when I first got it... I put it on a Ovonic 5200 3s 50C battery. It ran good for about 6 days and I was doing speed runs on a 17T 57T gearing which is fine. But the esc smoked and shot fire out of it 🤣🤣.. but that was a while back I got a 4076 2200kv on a max 6 esc now way way way faster lol

Its currently in a bandit on 35/76 gearing on 3s.. doesn't care at all. Before that it was in my slash 4x4 on 21/50 gearing and it got hot as hell but never died obviously.
