1997 Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went 10-6 in the 1997 season which featured a turn around from a 6-10 record the previous season and becoming one of the top teams in the NFL. The Bucs made the playoffs and defeated the Detroit Lions 20-10 winning their first playoff game since 1979.

It was a shame Hardy Nickerson wasn't still with the team when they won it all in 2002. He was the first building block in those great Tampa defenses. Too bad Trent Dilfer couldn't keep progressing after 1997. Imagine if the Bucs had a franchise quarterback to go along with the rest of that team.

seanlockyer1976 - I actually started following the team when they were hyping the new local boys Erickson and Erric Rhett in 1994. I wasn't a fan of Erickson because the offense was still near the bottom of the league, but he definitely was given too short of a lease. Their O - line was always weak and that made it harder on the skills players. I was a fan of Dilfer, but he was terrible with turnovers, always leaving the defense in difficult situations. How many NFL preview issues did I read in the late nineties with the headline saying "make or break " year for Dilfer.

@@TheAlfrulz I agee Erickson imo should have been given more time Dilfer never needed to be drafted the bucs had other needs when he was Drafted I really believe the bucs would have been better on offense moving forward with Erickson

Seriously dilfer wasn't the issue the BUCS offense under dungy was hard to watch they only had 2 good players on offense dunn and alstott that's it no recievers any QB would have looked bad in Tampa bay offense dilfer king Johnson all looked bad in Tampa bay offense there is a reason dungy was fired he was good with defense mediocre on offense

This may be my favorite season ever. I was a season ticket holder from 1995 to 2009, and while the Super Bowl season was of course amazing, there was something magical about 1997. It was like, "is this really happening? Are we really finally a good team?" At that playoff game against Detroit, nobody sat the entire game. We stood screaming all four quarters.

1997 was my first and only year where I had season tickets as they had this wedge where you could get $125 tickets for the entire season. This was when half the stadium was rival fans and they put this wedge right through the visitors side so our section was always surrounded by people. Anywho that year was fantastic. I've been to a lot of games but that was the only season with season tickets and I remember nearly every game in pretty good detail, in large part because of our constant battles with the visiting fans, in particular the Miami game and the Packers game stand out as we harassed the hell out of those people - with the Sunday Night game against Miami including about 200 beers flying into the Dolphins fans as Dunn had that long touchdown to seal the game. It was fantastic and a lot of fun. Once we moved to the new stadium (well 20 years old now) most of that feeling went away as there really isn't a dedicated home and away side (there is, but no one pays attention to it) and we don't get nearly the same number of out of towners as we used too. For comfort I love the current place as the old place was a dump with bench seats, but man, those old games were a lot more fun because watching a team go from loser to the playoffs is amazing.

Wow, what a special season, crazy this was 20 years ago! I went to the regular season home game against Detroit. That was Sanders at his greatest that day. Was great they were able to close out Tampa Stadium with a great season. I think 2017 is gonna be another special season.

in 1997 Buccaneers changed from the Bucco Bruce to a flag with skull, football and 2 swords replaced the white helmet with pewter helmet in 2013 they enhanced their logo to enlarge on a pewter helmet with chrome face mask replace the black one that they had in 1997 and the uniforms look like xfl, star trek, and arena football with the numbers on the uniforms look like digital clocks.
