To answer all questions once you have used 2 phones for the setup you can make both phones hotspots the same name and password and you can now turn your hotspot on the device u wish to cast and the second device is not needed...you only need a second device for the setup...i just did this successfully and it works

Or you can set up your ChromeCast on your home wifi and then just name your phone the same as your WiFi SSID and use the same password. Your ChromeCast won't know the difference between your home wifi and your phone's hotspot.

@@azurepink5737 if your tablet has a sim card and you can use it as a hotspot then yes. What I did with my phone was open the data and hotspot and close Wi-Fi. Then use another phone to connect to chromecast via my phone's hotspot internet. Once chromecast is connected to your hotspot then you can use your phone to cast to chromecast directly. Only by opening the hotspot. Sorry I wrote it in a rush, tell me if it's not clear.

I only use 1 phone, but sometimes there where connection problems because most apps that support casting didn't recognize my hotspot as a wifi signal. To avoid this problem turn on WiFi together with mobile hotspot, make sure the settings for sharing wifi connection is on, as well as 'switch over to mobile data', which can be found in the advanced menu in the WiFi setting menu. In this way you can both have WiFi and your mobile hotspot active together without being actually connected to a WiFi signal, but the apps will still think you are on WiFi. Hopefully these instructions make sense, I'm a Dutch woman with no technical knowledge at all, so probably it all sounds like gibberish.

Tried that here in Australia but my Samsung phone will not allow hotspot and wifi at the same time. I have only ONE phone and Chromecast. No WIFI here. Hotspot only. Connecting happens but impossible to predict- sometimes instant but most times HOURS of switching and rebooting everything, even with Google home. FRUSTRATED!!! Can you telly me why???

Me too! I used one device to tether and one device to cast because the phone that was tethering did not recognize the the Wi-Fi tethering network for the setup. Works like a charm!

I Found that you do need WI fi to connect To the chromecast but after that I was able to follow the steps up I work A flying and fly out job and couldn't connect to camp Wi-Fi so I found this very useful

That shouldn't work because you need both the phone and Chromecast on the same wifi network and the phone can't be on its own wifi when it is being used as a router.

Really wish there was a way to cast straight to the Chromecast without a second device? If I'm alone on the boat then I've only got one device so can't use this method. This is great if you're a couple or a family but aside from that Chromecast still has flaws. I even have the ability to set up a WiFi hotspot using the Navigation system on the boat but as that can't connect to the internet this method doesn't work either.

@@zz424 No, you need two phones to set up the ChromeCast. One phone acts as the router/modem and the other as the "casting" phone to configure the Chromecast. If you are at home and have wifi, then you can use 1 phone to set up the ChromeCast through your home's wifi. Then while you are away from home, as long as the phone's hotspot SSID (usually the name of the phone) and hotspot password are the same, the ChromeCast will think it is the same wifi network and connect.

The "slave" device is acting as the router here. And yes you are burning through mobile data. If you are using ChromeCast Ultra and the program is 4k on a 4k TV, you'd better have a good amount of data on your plan and NO THROTTLING!

You can do that by swapping which phone is the "wifi router" and which one is the "casting" phone. Turn on hotspot on phone 1, then connect to hotspot on phone/tablet 2. Download and setup Google Home on phone/tablet 2 and connect to ChromeCast and set up Chromecast in Google Home using hotspot. Then turn off hotspot on phone 1 and turn on hotspot on phone 2 using the same SSID (this step is important). Then set up hotspot on phone 1 and and connect phone 2 to hotspot. Then Phone 2 can cast to Chromecast using Phone 1's hotspot which the ChromeCast should automatically connect to if you used the same SSID.

Note... You can only do this in places with internet, as the Chromecast requires to do a handshake with the Google servers for everything! So, be careful following his advice on vacation as you will burn through your data allowance in no time.

Thanks man, very handy. I'm using this method to cast song lyrics/chords to a monitor on stage using Onsong from my iPad. I built a small flatscreen tv into an old stage monitor so it just looks like a wedge to the audience. I use a Bluetooth page turner to control the iPad which just sits out of sight somewhere. Works great! I just hate the look of an iPad clipped to a mic stand!

Yes you can, in the bottom of the mobile hotspot menu is an option to share your WiFi connection, enable this option. Also make sure that you enable your phone to switch between wifi and mobile data.

You can cast from a phone to a ChromeCast while hotspot is on. I just did it with an iPhone 8. I already has the Chromecast connected to my Google account. Turned off home wifi (totally unpluged the router/modem), turned on hotspot on the phone using the same SSID and password as the home wifi and the Chromecast automatically reconnected to the phone’s hotspot. LTE streams pretty slow inside my house.

I think it will use up all your data very quickly I'm not an expert on this but I think so I only have 15 GB hotspot in that's about an hour or two of watching videos and it's gone and then it's throttle down to where you can't even really use it anymore for that month so I think this is very bad advice this guy gave but I could be wrong

You are still using your phones data if you are streaming content. I think what you mean to say is you can play content that is local to your phone on your TV without data.

Hi i am encountering a problem of late with my chromecast which used to work without an issue on the same TV. i have checked in my neighbour'' s house my chromecast it works fine. i have checked the hdmi port of my tv using direct cast through wired hdmi cable. works fine. when i connect the chromecast to hdmi port it some times shows as if starting up and after a while no signal comes in. i have tried this through hot sport switching off the wifi router. but no use. i am using the same netgear wnr 612 mini router and i do not know whether the settings have been changed when i reconnected the wifi service last month after a break of 1 year. but i am not able to use evenwith mobile hotspot. can you help me.

You can use whatever hotspot name you want (e.g. "iphone") from your phone but it must be on while you are trying to connect the ChromeCast to the phone's hotspot.

A Chromecast should view your hotspot as a wifi network when it is turned on. Make sure the hotspot screen is open on the phone.

Only if you go over your data plan. Although most providers just throttle the speeds to something that is too slow to realistically stream video.
