Tamron is releasing the 17-70 For Sony APSC cameras like the a6400 a6600 and a6100. After using this lens for the last month I feel I can easily say this is the best lens you could buy for a Sony APSC camera. The Tamron 17-70 is light weight, small, versatile and delivers fantastic image quality over almost the entire zoom range. The 17-70 f2.8 means it also performs well in low light for astrophotography, and since it has image stabilization built into the lens it can make an excellent lens for handheld filming and photography work! To test the tamron 17-70 I took it with me on a few trips in Alaska and even compared and tested it against the Sony 16-55 f2.8 G lens. Over all The Tamron 17-70 f2.8 is a fantastic lens and easily one of the best For Sony APSC cameras.

Great information, Jake! I heard you mention the a6600. Are you pretty confident that the resulting stabe (a6600 IBIS + Tamron's VC) is really noticeably better than a6400 with this lens? Or better than say the a6600 with Sony OSS-equipped lens (which I find great for pics...but not so much for video). Glad to have stumbled across and sub'd your channel today!
@JakeSloan
@JakeSloan 3 жыл бұрын
I would say it is better with a IBIS capable camera but how much is hard to say. I think it would be noticeable though. I think the difference between this lens and a sony lens with oss is going to be just about exactly the same on the same camera body though. Thanks for subscribing!

Hi Jake. Your reviews are great and very helpful! I’m wondering if you have any thoughts on the Sigma 18-50 2.8 (for a6600) in comparison to these. Size and price is compelling vs Tamron but the extra reach and better weather sealing of the Tamron is certainly tough to ignore. Thank you.

I see you used it on your A7C throughout the review. How do you see it’s viability being used on a full frame having both types of bodies. Is this more worth it or having say the full frame 28-75 2.8 being used on APSC. I’m trying to determine keeping my 6600 and getting this lens or upgrading to the A7C so I would love to hear your thoughts.
@JakeSloan
@JakeSloan 3 жыл бұрын
I would not upgrade from the a6600 to the a7c personally. You have more controls on the a6600 and custom buttons. the only real difference is the flip out screen and full frame. everything else is the same. The OSS (tamron calls is VC vibration compensation) makes this lens a bit better than the 28-75 for APSC shooters for sure especially since you have IBIS as well
@sneakergearz
@sneakergearz 3 жыл бұрын
@@JakeSloan considering you have both, or at least a 6400 and A7C, That means a lot. Thank you sir. I’ve been going back and forth and I really do enjoy my APSC for personal use versus my A7Riii for client work. I just didn’t want to have 2 sets of lenses. Going full frame to the A7C was more to simply my collection. Just not sure it’s worth it? I would either buy 2 more lenses for my 6600 or sell it and spend the money needed to go full frame and not really need to buy any more lenses.

Jack, Thanks a lot for the great review. I have the A6400 + Sony 1655. I really wish it had the OSS. The price difference between Sony 1655 and Tamron 1770 in the US is crazy. Maybe it is because of the US-China tariffs. Just wondering if the Sony is $100 US more expensive than Tamron, would you still recommend Tamron over Sony? I bought my Sony 1655 for about $900 US in Canada (with all possible discounts I can find) in Nov. 2019. Thanks a lot.
@JakeSloan
@JakeSloan 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul I would still purely due to the extra reach and the image stabilization in the lens is fantastic! if you already have The Sony though I don't know that I would crossgrade. I have a video coming tomorrow that does a bit more of a deep dive in the image quality comparison.

Between this and the 18-300 which would be the better pick? I’m mostly aiming to do portraits with my photography as I’m starting out, so I’d appreciate the wider aperture on this, but idk if I just want it to have it but the extra range sounds like it could be fun

And another story to be told is the comparison to the Zeiss 4 16-70 with stabilisation, isn’t it?

The Tamron 17-70 mm is a nice lens, but may be longer, heavier, and is $150 more expensive than the zoom Sony apsc G lens of 18-135mm (also with image stabilization). The Sony lens is much better as a real zoom because it has almost twice the zoom range. As well, you can get deals on the sony lens-I believe I paid under $500 for it. Anyway, I've been using this lens for a year and really like it. Thanks for your review of the Tamron lens.

This Tamron is definitely not small ! I have the Sony 16-55 and for me it is the largest lens I am willing to carry. The Tamron looks HUGE ! I have to say one more thing for the Sony - It is the best zoom lens I ever had, and I had a few, including the 24-70 GM. It can beat 80% of modern primes ! believe me, I have a Loxia and many more primes, I know what I'm talking about. So this Tamron is not for me, even though it has some important advantages, especially the VC and the price.

How does it compare to 18-104 f4 mm fron Sony? Im thinking that sigma 16 mm f.1.4 for low light + 18-104 f4 for zoom is still a bit better setup than only having Tamron 17-70 f 2.8. It will not give you the low light performance sigma gives. What is your take on this? new Tamron or Sigma 16 + Sony 18-104 as a starting setup?

The sigma will give slightly better low light performance but from my experience is a fair bit worse in it's distortion. It is however an excellent lens. I would still choose this over the 18-104 since I feel this lens is sharper and performs a bit better overall
@igrzyskx
@igrzyskx 3 жыл бұрын
@@JakeSloan Thanks for your answer. Of course comparing 18-104 directly to Tamron, Tamron wins quality wise I guess. But taking price point into conideration and that combo of SImga + 18-104 is still 25% cheaper than new Tamron. Hm not sure
