I got this lens recently and it's an absolute dream. I do a lot of low light event photography, and this has been perfect. I love the constant 2.8 aperture. I've also been traveling with it paired with the XT4 and the weight has been just fine for walking around with it for hours.

What an incredibly informative video! I just love the way you describe things. I've been using the 16-80 f/4 since it came out as I travel quite often but recently dropped it and it needs repairing. I'm seriously considering replacing it with this. Just need to decide if I want to trade the minor difference in focal length for a constant f/2.8.

Thanks for the review, I personally own the 16-80 f4 which I have found to be pretty darn good, even in low light. Love it’s size and the fact it has an aperture ring makes it for me a great travel lens. For more depth of field I use my 35 f2 prime.

Based on this review I ordered it. It just arrived and it is impressive. It balances well on the XH2S and zooms smoothly. I also returned my 16-80 and my 18-55. With the pancake 27 this makes a great travel/cruise ship kit. My 10-24 and 70-300 don’t get a lot of use. I do like the XF 23 and 33 too for low light moments. Thanks for all you do.

Looking at this as a weather sealed alternative to my 18-55mm. All the other options either have a smaller aperture or no OIS. This ticks all the boxes for aperture, OIS, and weather sealing. The only thing holding me back is the size, but I think I'll eventually end up picking it up.

I purchased this lens 2 weeks ago for a trip to st.thomas.. unfortunately some of my vacation was spent inside due to hurricane Fiona, but I did get a decent amount of time with it for video and photos. I was very happy with the af in video and stills ... tracking was always on point. I was honestly surprised how good this lens was over all. The IS paired with inbody on the xt4 left me with really nice tac sharp hand held night images. Image wise my only mehh feelings come from its natural color. Shooting jpg, I just felt color was very muted. Only real dislike is lack of aperture ring. Thank you to tamron for this little best of a lens.

Great review, thank you very much! I was wondering about two things: 1) At 07:57 it may look like the focal point is just slightly further back. It sort of looks like the tip of the shell on the lego turtle is in focus and quite sharp? 2) At 08:48 perhaps the lens would perform better if it was in manual focus mode? Have you noticed any differences there with regards to parfocality?

This was a great review as usual, but I have to point out that you mentioned an aperture ring as a plus for the 16-55. I know you didn't love it, but the 16-80 also has a marked ring. I'm a stills guy so the focus wobble isn't a problem for me.

Before switching from Nikon FF to Fujifilm two years ago, my Nikon kit included the holy trinity in the Tamron V2 series (which this has the look of). I had compared them to the Nikon counterparts prior to purchase and in most cases, the Tamrons were either just as good, and in some cases even better than the top-of-the line Nikkors. To my eye at least, just my opinion. 30 years ago I started my photography journey by buying what I could afford, meaning cheap glass. I had some Sigmas, Tamrons and Tokinas. I couldn't get out of them fast enough, they were just never as good as Nikkors. So it took something special to change my mind all those years later, and I think Tamron knocked it out of the park. Haven't tried Tamron for Fujifilm yet, but I would have a go, no hesitation.

Thanks for the review. I own the Fuji 16-80mm and it is a great lens. Mine is very sharp and contrasty and I'm not experiencing the issues that you had with it. Other than an extra f stop, I don't see any real advantage to the Tamron at that price. Now the bargains are with the Sigma Fuji mount lenses because they run about half the price of the Fuji. I picked up a Sigma 56mm 1.4 last week and it out performs the Fuji 56 1.2 I got rid of last year in almost all areas. Tamron could do better on that price if they want to be more competitive.

Great video, and a very versatile lens. I'm torn though, as I've come into a little cash, and may trade my X-S10 in towards an XH-2 with the 16-80mm kit. The softness at smaller apertures may be a problem for landscapes. For portraits, and street, it will be great. Food for thought!

The f2.8 17-70, and speed is very appealing for Tamron. I have the Viltrox 13mm 1.4, but now I need a longer focal range. It seems like the focus breathing is still apparent in the fuji 16-80 from the last B&H review.......leaning towards Tamro, but Viltrox has a new Fuji 75mm 1.2 pro lens coming.

Hi Pal, the image Quality test for higher f numbers at 5:00 seems to be influenced by increasing ISO Noise. Sharpness can be better judged if the the image shows the same for every focal length. I. e. go near for wide angle and far for tele. It would be interesting how it compares to the Fuji 16-55/2.8. I think compared to the other Fuji lenses it’s a no brainer because of the constant 2.8 aperture of the Tamron.

I'd love to see a comparison with the 16-80mm, and the new 18-120mm F/4.. I own the 16-80 and don't have the problems you experienced; however, it is also not a perfect lens. the new 18-120 interests me, and is a similar price in the UK as the Tamron (the 16-80 is a little cheaper, although out of stock). I also wish all manufactures put T stops on lenses or at least made it easier to find them as not all F/2.8 or F/4 lenses are the same for light gathering especially now, a lot of photographers are hybrid photo/video shooters and being able to swap a T 2.8 lens for a different T2.8 lens makes video life a lot easier etc

I generally shoot buildings or other static subjects so it’s nothing to do with face/eye detection or focus tracking. It doesn’t put me off using the 18-300, but I know to check every shot for focus straight after, and sometimes I need to re-take. Of course the 17-70 might be different.

I had, and sold, my Tamron 18-300 (I'm also using an X-T4) for the same reason. I was having a lot of trouble with the focus being unreliable. I have other Tamron lenses and love them, so I'm hopeful this was just a one off. It could have been the perfect lens!

Did you return the lens to Tamron under warranty stating your issues? I don't have or really want that lens, however it has been universally highly reviewed and I have not seen any real world users, as opposed to reviewers, do anything but praise the lens. Could you have received a poor unit?

@@robertcudlipp3426 That's a good question, but I'm not sure one way or the other. Most of the time it's fine - and when it does miss focus it's not so bad or so frequent that it seems like a technical fault. More like an annoying idiosyncrasy that I put down to the third party lens protocols not always playing nicely. But maybe I'm wrong. Too late to return it now - and sadly it doesn't have a USB-C port for firmware updates, unlike a handful of other Tamron zooms.

this lens option looks very attractive to get that extra reach at 70mm is it losing contrast and less sharp because the ISO is going high and its just a noisy image? (most likely both)

How would this lens hold up on an X-T5 or X-H2 with the 40 MP sensor? sufficient resolution for these cameras?

Great video... just two question, is the fuji 16-55 2.8 parfocal or not? And does the fuji red badge lens have any focus breathing issues? Thank you so much for all the effort.

It is not. The only par focal lens is the new Fujifilm 18-120mm F4.
@quikee9195
@quikee9195 Жыл бұрын
@@americosequeira8670 no, it's not - it's pseudo par-focal, where the focus difference is more exactly and smoothly compensated when zooming (probably because the zoom is by-wire so they always know how the zoom changed). A true par-focal lens doesn't change focus when zooming so there is nothing to compensate and the only par focal Fuji lenses are the MKX cinema lenses.

Has anyone tested on the new sensor in the xt5 and Xh-2? I was looking at the 18-300 tamron and rep said it’s not great on those sensors????

Time to pull out the 40MP Fujis in 2023 for comparisons going forward, IMO. My X-H2 body is really lonely for a sweet new zoom lens. Thanks for the video.

I got it yesterday. I am struggling with the fixed aperture on my Fuji X-S20. I use the C1 configuration and I was used to adjust the aperture on my Fuji lens. Now this is gone. What is the best way to cop/handle this fixed aperture please?

I shoot skateboarding, where zooming in-n-out clip is a must. I have 16-80mm f.4 on my XH1 and the autofocus while zooming during videorecording is terrible as well. What lens what you recommend me? Is there any lens which good for this and also good for photos at the same time? Thank you for tips!
@Paul_Rohde
@Paul_Rohde Жыл бұрын
If you're zooming during videorecording, then I would assume you would want a parfocal lens, that would mean the new XF18-120mm F4 LM PZ WR. No OIS, meaning it needs a tripod or gimbal, which is the way to go anyway. It's 40 MPixel approved so it should be good for photos too, at F4 max. Any thoughts? Also, re autofocus, unfortunately the XH1 is a generation behind the X-T3/4 etc, which is now a good generation bump behind the X-H2[S]/X-T5 etc.
