It sort of looks like the tip of the shell on the lego turtle is in focus and quite sharp? 2) At 08:48 perhaps the lens would perform better if it was in manual focus mode? Have you noticed any differences there with regards to parfocality?

I purchased this lens 2 weeks ago for a trip to st.thomas.. unfortunately some of my vacation was spent inside due to hurricane Fiona, but I did get a decent amount of time with it for video and photos. I was very happy with the af in video and stills ... tracking was always on point. I was honestly surprised how good this lens was over all. The IS paired with inbody on the xt4 left me with really nice tac sharp hand held night images. Image wise my only mehh feelings come from its natural color. Shooting jpg, I just felt color was very muted. Only real dislike is lack of aperture ring. Thank you to tamron for this little best of a lens.

Before switching from Nikon FF to Fujifilm two years ago, my Nikon kit included the holy trinity in the Tamron V2 series (which this has the look of). I had compared them to the Nikon counterparts prior to purchase and in most cases, the Tamrons were either just as good, and in some cases even better than the top-of-the line Nikkors. To my eye at least, just my opinion. 30 years ago I started my photography journey by buying what I could afford, meaning cheap glass. I had some Sigmas, Tamrons and Tokinas. I couldn't get out of them fast enough, they were just never as good as Nikkors. So it took something special to change my mind all those years later, and I think Tamron knocked it out of the park. Haven't tried Tamron for Fujifilm yet, but I would have a go, no hesitation.

Thanks for the review. I own the Fuji 16-80mm and it is a great lens. Mine is very sharp and contrasty and I'm not experiencing the issues that you had with it. Other than an extra f stop, I don't see any real advantage to the Tamron at that price. Now the bargains are with the Sigma Fuji mount lenses because they run about half the price of the Fuji. I picked up a Sigma 56mm 1.4 last week and it out performs the Fuji 56 1.2 I got rid of last year in almost all areas. Tamron could do better on that price if they want to be more competitive.

Hi Pal, the image Quality test for higher f numbers at 5:00 seems to be influenced by increasing ISO Noise. Sharpness can be better judged if the the image shows the same for every focal length. I. e. go near for wide angle and far for tele. It would be interesting how it compares to the Fuji 16-55/2.8. I think compared to the other Fuji lenses it’s a no brainer because of the constant 2.8 aperture of the Tamron.

I’ve got the Tamron 18-300 for my X-T4 and my one criticism (versus my Fujinon lenses- the 16-80 and the 10-24WR) is that it misses focus sometimes. I generally shoot buildings or other static subjects so it’s nothing to do with face/eye detection or focus tracking. It doesn’t put me off using the 18-300, but I know to check every shot for focus straight after, and sometimes I need to re-take. Of course the 17-70 might be different.

@@robertcudlipp3426 That's a good question, but I'm not sure one way or the other. I have just seen this excellent and very practical video. Am an owner of the XT20, XT20 and XS10. Purchased an 18-135 Fuji as an all round lens. The 16-55 2.8 is really too limited in its focal range, for me, maybe not others? Also, it's too heavy and expensive for travel type needs. When this new Tamron lens in the Fuji mount is reviewed, no mention is even made of the 18-135 zoom. Will immediately be checking to see if it's still in production after putting up this post. The 18-60 has not been all that well reviewed, and not only because of the fixed f4. The new Tamron seems to have put a real cat among the pigeons so far as Fuji's mid range zooms are concerned. As an owner of the 18-135, tbh, have been sufficiently happy with it's performance not to immediately sell in favour of the Tamron. I think the Sigma 18-50 2.8 coming later this year will give us another travel lens to consider that is much more compact. That 17-70 looks a bit too big for a travel lens for my taste anyway. Curious how it will resolve 40mp sensors though
@paceyombex2 жыл бұрын
You can look at it that way, but if you want one lens that could do (almost) everything 17-70 could allow you to do that. 50 vs 70 is a pretty significant difference in AOV. Not as versatile as the 18-300mm, but I think it's better than the 18-50 from Sigma, especially considering the Tamron is better in IQ (from what I can see), weather resistant, and has OIS. If you're on a budget and want a fast standard zoom lens, and you're willing to compromise on not having OIS, then Sigma is for you.

@@paceyombex Well, Sigma 18-50 is way smaller and lighter than Tamron (77mm 290g vs. 119mm 525g) so both will appeal to different users, which have different needs and priorities. @paceyombex2 жыл бұрын
@@quikee9195 Never said the Sigma was bad, it's way cheaper, and as you said way smaller and lighter. My case is for a versatile travel lens in one package. Yup the Sigma is smaller, but since you don't get as much reach, you may have to carry another lens to fill it, making your whole package bigger in general, you'll also have more thing to take care of. So yeah, if versatility and IQ is the main consideration, I'd say Tamron clearly wins. But, for your case Sigma is the better option since that lens is *tiny.*

it's a nice lens for the price, how ever i still love my 18-135 that lens is sharper then the Tamron 17-70 and you don't lose contrast at higher Aperture numbers like this lens and also i'm not getting any vignetting like that at all.. And my lens is around the same price so you might want to review that because it has more focal length available.. Cheers Donny

Ciao! I was wondering if you ever used the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR (that's the original kit lense I got from my new XT5) I'd like to ask you, if is worth sell this lens, buying the new Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RX D. I don't really care if is 85gr heavier, or a bit longer then fuji.. Even if it has less focal lenght, zooming. But that 2.8 makes me curious. 😀 Thanks from Sicily (Italy)

Great video... just two question, is the fuji 16-55 2.8 parfocal or not? And does the fuji red badge lens have any focus breathing issues? Thank you so much for all the effort.
@americosequeira86702 жыл бұрын
It is not. The only par focal lens is the new Fujifilm 18-120mm F4.
@quikee91952 жыл бұрын
@@americosequeira8670 no, it's not - it's pseudo par-focal, where the focus difference is more exactly and smoothly compensated when zooming (probably because the zoom is by-wire so they always know how the zoom changed). A true par-focal lens doesn't change focus when zooming so there is nothing to compensate and the only par focal Fuji lenses are the MKX cinema lenses.

Thank you for this great review video. I hope you can answer this question for me. I have the XT-4 and interested in buying the Tamron 17-70. Do the IBIS and lens stabilization work together?

Excellent review. I already have the 16-55 but as you said it is heavy. The Tamron looks like a great travel lens that is much cheaper.

Does this lens take full advantage of 40MP of XH2?

Have one for Sony E, great lens! Also am actively switching to Fuji cuz tried X-T4 not so long ago and can confidently say that if it would have X-T3 screen, it would be my dream camera.

2:37 No. It's meant to compete with Fuji's 16-55mm lens.

Is it really that good lens considering its just 50% more price to pay compared to XF 16-80 f/4 especially when brought with camera. Few youTubers mentioned its soft at f/2.8 at 70mm. So that means it has to stopped down to f/3.2 or f/4. then what's the use of ?

XT3. He mentions it in the video.

Do you have a review of the Fuji 16-80? Which focus issues did you had that you had to return the lens? I was considering that one or this Tamron and I'm curious to know.

The difference in image quality between the Tamron 17-70mm and the Fuji XF 16-55mm, is really that big? I ask this because I struggled in my decision to buy one of this lenses and I never saw a proper comparison between them to clarify this... Like I saw for the Sony e-mount between Sony 16-55, Sigma 18-50 and this Tamron... I leave the suggestion for a new video 🙂

@@aaronclinesmith2286 I know those reviews but there’s no direct comparison…
@aaronclinesmith22862 жыл бұрын
@@americosequeira8670 he uses the same tests in all of his videos so you can directly compare lens performance. They showed the same differences in IQ I noticed between my copies of the 16-55 and 17-70. Better corner sharpness and contrast at all focal lengths for the Fuji. Gets a little soft at the long end for Tamron. The difference is not huge, but noticeable when zoomed in.

Hello Pal2tech, about the "zoom in zoom out issue and parafocal", do you know a Fuji Zoom wich does not have this issue ? Thanks a lot for your work / test and everything !!

Thank you for this! I've been seriously eyeing it and if it ends up doing a good job of resolving the 40mp of the upcoming XH2, it'll be an instant buy.

Looks like a good lens but I found with the Tamron 18-300 that i had to disable the AF+MF as the manual focus ring gets bumped when cradeling the lens in the left hand too easily

Gracias por el vídeo, que tengas un buen fin de semana, dos preguntas tienes algún video del objetivo 10_24 mm sería para la fuji xt4? Sabe porque la pantalla de dicha cámara,no se llena nunca, siempre parece que recorta? Gracias

Chris, as always good info. Would you consider doing a “workflow” video. I’ve never had and often struggled with a coherent type of workflow to edit my photos. I’ve actually stopped editing my photos because I have no real cohesive workflow regimen. I’m frustrated. Thanks

I got one of these recently but adobe lightroom applies an automatic lens correction to its images that shows black rings vignettes. Is anyone else having this issue?

What an incredibly informative video! I just love the way you describe things. I've been using the 16-80 f/4 since it came out as I travel quite often but recently dropped it and it needs repairing. I'm seriously considering replacing it with this. Just need to decide if I want to trade the minor difference in focal length for a constant f/2.8.
