In México, each región has its version of "tequila" which is a unique version of a fermented drink made out of what grows in that particular region... Jalisco=Tequila Oaxaca=Mezcal Chihuahua=Sotol Sonora=Bacanora Some other place=Lechuguilla... Hay muchas variedades de "tequila" (fermented agave - looking type of plants)
@TangerineTravels6 жыл бұрын
Fascinating. We had no idea there were so many names for it! We only knew of Tequila and Mezcal
@DobleD19976 жыл бұрын
They are not exactly the same thing, though, each one of those are fermented and produced with a very specific type of agave plant (there are around 200 different ones). And the making process can also vary, so the taste is actually different. Tequila, for instance, can only be made with the *blue agave* specifically, and it *must* be done in the Tequila region, otherwise it can't be named tequila since it is protected with the *designation of origin.* Much the same way Champagne can't be produced outside of the Champagne region.

There is a train to Tequila which includes tasting tequilas and visiting the factories. It is probably worth a visit!!
@Itzeen6 жыл бұрын
What a cool experience, regarding to the "free food" in the cantinas, according to my dad he said that is very usted to "give food" like a generous quantity if you order alcohol. They will never charge you the food, is like "included" in your consumption of alcohol in the cantina. He told me that in his student days back in the 60's he and his friends never had enough money to eat so they went to the cantinas order alcohol in order to eat like a lot of food. And for what I heard it seems that this is the same mechanic of food in the cantinas.
@TangerineTravels6 жыл бұрын
How interesting... it did seem like they were happy to continue bringing more plates of food the longer we stayed and ordered drinks. Seems like a pretty great deal, especially for broke college kids. We remember those days :)

Like wines in France the name Tequila is protected by law and comes only from Jalisco. Like wine there are many grades and variations, most peculiar to a specific distiller. Liquor is made every where else in Mexico from the agave plant with regional names. The most common is Mezcal.
