Early-mid 20th century,wealthy Texans found refuge in SMA from the Texan summers and this has become quite the thing. Today expats flock there because expats flock there and a kind of SMA expat culture has grown up around that fact. Jordan does a great job of exploring that for us. Personally I consider Querétaro, where Jorda and Matty live, to be a much better choice of a place to both visit and live, but don't tell anybody, okay?

Agreed, San Miguel is truly amazing! If you want to spend a lot of money and that's what you enjoy, then that experience is available. But, honestly, it's not necessary to spend a lot of money to enjoy this beautiful city. We stayed in a beautiful two bedroom Casita on a lovely privada (residential street) a ten minute walk from the cathedral. It came complete with fireplace, library, rooftop patio and housekeeping for only $800/month. We walked to the market everyday for mouthwatering, freshly made tortas (sandwiches) and freshly made fruit/veg juices for only $2 each. Around the corner from our Casita was a gem of a restaurant, run by a local family in the front room of their home. No menus, you just ate what was available each day. The three of us ate some of the best Mexican food ever at a cost of only $10 total, for three of us! And don't forget the street food - tacos to die for, only $1-$2 each, elotes (roasted corn with lime and chili) for $1, fresh helado (ice cream) in a dazzling array of flavours (including bourbon and tequila!) for $1-$2 . So don't rule out this destination if you are a budget conscious traveller - seek out off the beaten path experiences, frequented by locals, to enjoy an authentic San Miguel experience without going broke.

T stefanyk: Very good reply. Unfortunately, most tourists do not know how to, or are afraid to, do as you suggest. Yes visitors: get off the tourist track and discover Mexico.
@MarcosElMalo22 жыл бұрын
The taco carts near Farmacia Guadalajara are pretty good. My neighbor Pancho operates the night time cart on the right! If you continue on the big street away from the centro histórico, there are many good restaurants at many price levels, all the way to La Comer supermarket. I pretty much avoid el centro most of the time.

Great review. I've been coming to SMdA for 15 years, always on motorcycle rides. I like to stay at Posada de Las Monjas on Canal, about 2 blocks West of El Jardin. Huge parking area and very reasonable rates. You highlighted a bunch of restaurants that I need to try next time, because I go back too many times to old favorites. San Miguel is a study in light and photography, especially during the "golden hour" from about 3 - 6 PM. The patina of old stone and reds and yellows and bougainvillea and a endless numbers of different doors make this town a feast for the eyes. Again, really good video.
@MarcosElMalo22 жыл бұрын
I rode my moto down here from Los Angeles 11 years ago. I’ve never been back to L.A. for more than a couple weeks. 😄 I’m glad you love it and that you come by bike. The route through Rodriguez is a nice ride that gets you to the Salida a Querétaro. You go past the Tuesday Market, past the Luciernaga shopping mall, and take A LEFT to the libremiento at the roundabout. As you ride down the gentle curves, the whole town opens up to your view and you might want to stop at the first outlook. This, to me, is the best way to ride into SMA. Everything spread out, from the presa to the road to Dolores, and it’s welcoming you home.
@robinsareolas2 жыл бұрын
I’m so incredibly lucky to be able to visit anytime I want since my wife is from there and her family has homes there. If you have the opportunity though, Don’t skip the Tuesday market. It’s absolutely one of my favorite things to do there when we visit.

Hey Jordan. I've been going to San Miguel since the early 60s when I was in my early teens. I loved just walking, as you suggest. I'm heading down for 10 days in just 2 weeks, Jan 15 with some friends, renting a house (a LOT cheaper than a hotel) not far from the Rosewood. Yea, their rooftop bar is amazing. In Feb to Ajijic, looking into moving, at least part time. Enjoy your videos very much. Feliz Año Nuevo!

I would love to see more rural areas. Small villages and living quietly. I love being in countryside but I live at the beach here.
@MarcosElMalo22 жыл бұрын
I think that’s a bit beyond their expertise. The campo is wonderful if you can adapt to its ways (you already seem like one with that flexibility of mind). I lived in a rancho (village) between San Miguel de Allende and Dolores Hidalgo for a year. But let me emphasize: it can be a challenge at times. It can be stressful. You’ll probably experience much greater culture shock living on a rancho then you would in a town, even if you pride yourself with going with the flow. Just be aware that it could happen, be prepared for it, and don’t beat yourself up for not measuring up. As far as peace and quiet, it’s relative. Yes, it’s quieter than in town, but it could still get pretty noisy. People love loud music, especially younger people, and the young people prefer types of music that are . . . well, look at me, about to go off on a grouchy rant about reggaetón and banda. Anyway, Mexico is a noisy place wherever there are people. If you’re here long enough, it just become background noise.

As a resident I can say, Yes, San Miguel is expensive by Mexican standards, but still a deal if you know where to look. In Guadiana colonia there is a hotel with widows opening on to Parc Guadiana, for only $70 US per night. Just this last weekend we had friends come visit, we went out to eat the first night at "Hecho en Mexico" dinner for 5 people with drinks was under $100US. The next night we went upscale to Casa Nostra 4 people with drinks, wine and steaks came to about $50 per person. While that may be expensive by Mexican standards, something comparable in a large US city would be probably double that.

Great job. I have been going to San Miguel for years; one of my favorite cities in the world. I have stayed in B&Bs, hotels, and houses in SMA. The best choice, and less expensive, is to rent an apt or house through VRBO, especially if you're staying several days or weeks. Having a kitchen and experiencing the local markets and bakeries is a great way to save money to spend on more expensive dinners out. After almost two years of covid isolation, I really miss Mexico. I enjoyed the glimpses along those cobblestone streets!
