Big John was a Gracie follower at that time, it is how he got the job and being that the first UFC was invented to be a commercial for Gracie jiu jitsu I do t find it hard to believe that big John was invested in the Gracie name being pushed forward. Also what Tank said about big John standing him up before that was even a rule is true, that was the first time anyone was stood up for lack of action and there were some long ass boring ass fights before that that never got interrupted. The ufc didn’t like Tank, that’s a pretty established fact. I don’t think anything Tank said was out of line or some crazy conspiracy personally.
@81ghale5 ай бұрын
I’m kind of with this same line of thinking. I’m sure Tank got some things wrong, both accidentally from being smashed drunk all the time, and maybe purposefully just out of not liking John, but I can see it playing out the way he said pretty much. For the reasons you said, and you have to remember John was/is a cop. They know how to talk in circles and get people misdirected to make a conversation go a certain way they want. I think both guys were right and wrong in different instances more than likely. I don’t call Tank’s whole side of story bunk just because he got some things out of sequence, he was drunk ALL THE TIME 😂 of course he’s going to get the timeline screwed up, but like he said most of what he’s talking about is on tape.
@jerm130885 ай бұрын
Listening to what a drunk said who didn't know his limitations and had demons he dealt with by being basically mean and evil to anyone who did something he didn't agree with. John has good cause to hold a grudge but yet he has never brought this up until Tank started talking. People who were there at the time also back up Johns statements. Literally No One has backed up Tanks stories. So it is hard to believe that the UFC hated a guy they kept bringing back to fight and still run highlights of his and John hated a guy he hung out with AFTER all these instances happened. Alcohol and depression affect memory and emotions after excessive use and without treatment.

It's pretty obvious John's family was very involved in the UFC. Tank has had five strokes and a liver and kidney transplant. Cut him slack. I doubt either one of these guys could fight for 17 minutes straight in one fight. Not to mention that was his third fight of the fight.
@watchmanonthewall145 ай бұрын
I'm older than Big John. I remember the reputation Tank had in Huntington Beach. I hoped that I would never run into him on the streets. He was a mean, angry man who wanted to fight all day long with anyone. He bragged about KO'ing people in bars. He was a menace. Yes, he was an alcoholic, BUT, not all alcoholics are violent. It's part of his nature. When he fought in the early days, I listened very carefully to what he had to say in interviews, and I studied his mannerisms. The vibe I always got was that he was an UNSTABLE individual, at best. When Vitor cleaned his clock, I could not be happier. The angry bully got stopped in his tracks. Tank went to a lot of HB bars, but there was one that he was fond of, and that's one of the bars where he was fighting and many cops were called and they arrested him. PD knew him WELL. That bar has since gone out of business and has been replaced by a restaurant, but whenever I drive by the building, I think of Tank.

It is also sad that he's going through what he is, all we can do is hope and pray for the best outcome that he can possibly have.

Memory has much less to do with what actually happened. And more to do with validating our current self. Every time you remember something, you change it a little little bit, but over time that little bit, becomes quite a bit. This is why eyewitness testimony is garbage and shouldn't be trusted. Also, Tank thinking John is out to get him, John represents authority and i dare say Tank perceives all authority over him as unjust. And John was a copper.

I posted here last week here, but what you just wrote made me think of something I should have included in my original post. By listening to Big John podcast after podcast, he has shown a PATTERN of accurate memory for small details of long ago. As opposed to Tank's pattern of having a "unique" perspective on past events. Tank's perspectives have always been "unique". One thing that both Tank and Big John do agree on is that those early tournaments had suspect matchmaking behind the scenes, to favor certain fighters in a tournament, as well as a couple of fights that were thrown.
@blueelephant49715 ай бұрын
Tank wrote three books, "Bar Brawler (2012)", "Street Fighter" (2019), and "Cage Fighter (2021)". In them he changes all the names to avoid lawsuits but with the more famous people you can tell who their alter ego is. For instance Art Davie is "Big Bart Shady" and John McCarthy is "Little Winchell Duncan". In these books he repeats everything he said on Rogan's show and lobs many other accusations as well.

Tank was a menace in public at local bars in HB Orange County he’s an adolescent power drinker and painted a picture on JRE episode crying like he was the victim and what he thinks what real fighting is. Professional fighters are in a legitimate legalized sport it’s not Jean Claud Van Damne’s Blood Sport Kumite! He’s talking about eye gouging and how someone reacts to something like that and it wouldn’t be a realistic thing to use an arm bar in that situation. He out dated himself with not physically keeping up with the level of competition that UFC evolved to. The sport out grew him plain and simple and he didn’t want change so he kept drinking and f**king up his own life just being an old drunk.

Mma fighters, especially back then are not normal people. You kind of have to be to do what they did. I think they have questionable judgement and I would take Johns word over tanks any day.

28:09 should've had Tank autograph the poster and include "to my #1 fan" before you gave it to your dad

I watched Tanks interview on Rogan and through most of the interview I was on board with Tank and he was compelling, but at some point in the interview it became apparent that he has paranoid personality disorder. Everything is a conspiracy against him. And I even believed his story about John MCCarthy standing him up and then I sought out and watched that entire fight and Tank is full of crap on that. Most of the fight up until the point was on the ground and McCarthy had not stood them up until around the 15 minute mark. What destroyed Tank and winded him in that fight was a rear naked choke shortly before the stand up, which winded him to the point where both fighters were laying on the ground not doing anything... not trying to tap the other guy or tapping... and this is why McCarthy stood them up. Tank has an excuse for nearly all of his loses. And to listen to Tank now, Tank would have you believe that he was this big UFC fighting favorite but he lost nearly everyone of his fights. Most of the fights he won were against new fighters who were out of their element fighters. I watched the fights in those days and they would make this big fuss over the guy and he'd come out and lose like always. He's possibly the most overrated fighter in UFC history. And now I'm reading through these comment sections and commentors are straight up lying and saying, Tank is the reason why I got into UFC. Complete BS. Oh you mean the guy who lost nearly every fight was this big inspiration for you... they're lying. They're just saying that because it's the pc thing to say because Tank is doing his rounds.

McCartney verifies Tank’s story on the tape. He even admits he checked up with people who “worked” in his hometown - meaning fellow law enforcement - so he’s basically saying tank made that up over a technicality. Most of what Tank has said about these things are stuff he stated in old fight mags from around 2000-2004 and multiple sherdog interviews and his stories haven’t changed. Watching all these old school guys talk about tank you can tell there’s a jealousy there. Tank was a guy that genuinely liked to fight in time where most guys just speculated and wished they were tough but they weren’t people who really liked to fight. Calling a guy a story teller for getting a date wrong from 30 years ago - nah.

Oh, cuz you never fucked up and didn’t deserve a second chance? He also has done a ton of work to stop dog fighting and helping spread awareness about dogfighting to our youth. Get over yourself buddy. Josh Thomson

@@WeighingIn clearly touched a nerve, Joshy. Sure I've fucked up. I've forgotten birthdays, been late, hurt someone's feelings, etc. I've never fought dogs to the death. DOGS. You got a dog, Joshua? Do you give pedos a second chance? Murderers? Thieves? Yikes.

Tank seems like someone that lies a bit… I mean he said he knocked out a pro boxer without any prior training… I doubt that. Especially considering how his hands looked during his fights. He’s one of those tough guys. That’s the vibe he gives off.

Yeah, because KO'ing a pro boxer is impossible. /sarcasm Of all the things out of Tanks mouth, that one is the most believable.

An average Joe sure, but Tank was a legit athlete even if he didn't look it. He wrestled for most of his life and could bench press more weight than 99% of the population. Plus he had been in lots and lots of street fights. It's not that crazy to think he could catch a pro boxer, especially since we're talking about HWs here.

I really admire the way big John is so easy going when someone like Tank talks trash about him. It's an admirable trait to have such little ego, just enjoy your life and not worry too much about what the haters think. As Mike Tyson said "I used to get offended and then I realized I'm a nobody. Now I don't get offended"
