Tank Chats playlist • Tank Chats from The Ta... The thirty-third Tank Chat, this time presented by Curator David Willey. Including a fascinating insight into pre-Second World War German tank production and how the Panzer III worked alongside it's fellow Panzers.
To find out more, buy the new Haynes Panzer III tank manual. www.myonlinebooking.co.uk/tan...
The Panzer III was conceived in 1934 as the principle combat tank of the Panzer divisions. The Museum's Panzer III went into action in the North African theatre of war and is believed to have been captured at the Battle of Alam Halfa.

My Grandfather rode in one of them over in Afrika. He was also in Bengasi. He was then captured in Tobruk and remaind in POW Prison until the end of war. Years later he donated pictures to "Panzers in the Sand" written by Bernd Hartmann, published by Stackpole Books.

The 37 mm gun called later on „Panzeranklopfgerät“ literally means „Knock-on-a-tank-device“. My grandfather talled me that.

Some tankers called it a door knocker. But with good aim, they could jam the turret of a T-34 and outmaneuver it after tearing up the drive sprocket. Then shoot up the rear.

@@goldenhawk352 I'm glad we can talk about as history. As a small boy in 1960, I lived in Munich. There were still hundreds of destroyed buildings that hadn't yet been torn down. Guys on the street of an age to be veterans had a lot of amputations. I'd seen one or two amputees in my whole life, never one or two in a ten minute walk. That was the aftermath of what your uncles and grandfathers survived. In honor of the dead of all armies, I hope we never have another like it.

Pz 3 tanks production was halted in 1943, but the tank soldiered on till the end. The Pz 3 N with its 75mm gun was used in mixed formations with the Tiger 1s as close support tanks. Any older models that returned to the factory for repair or refit were brought up to 'N' standard and reissued to the Hvy Tank companies . The German considered the Pz 3 to be the superior engineered vehicle to the Pz 4.

I really enjoy these videos. Simple, pleasant, and informative. It's not like most high-production videos where they have to get a narrator with a gruff voice, various "experts", absurd CGI graphics, and annoying music. Just a bloke who knows his tanks (after all he is the curator) standing and giving a lecture with the tank behind him. This is the experience of being at a museum when you have a guide who knows his stuff! Thank you Mr. Willey and The Tank Museum!

One of my favorite computer games is Company of Heroes, and one of the coolest things about it was the historical accuracy with the units! I think one of the biggest advantages of having a frontal transmission or drive sprocket is that for the driver, it is a whole lot easier for him to shift a gearbox that he is sitting very close to than to, in the t-34 for example with a rear drive wheel, shift gears which are on the other side of the tank from you where the controls for those are much weightier, literally, and just harder to make do what you want basically

Sun_skimmer 89: yeah, they didn't expect the gun calibre to need to go up so fast! It jumps from 20mm autocannons on the II, to 50mm on late ausführung IIIs, to 75mm on IV and panther, and 88 on the Tiger. They just had to keep making the barrels longer too!
@RepairCat
@RepairCat 7 жыл бұрын
Later in the war they put a long barreled 75mm L/48 gun on the Pz IV and converted the Pz IIIs to StuGs, also carrying those 75mm guns. I guess they couldn´t fit them into the Pz IIIs turret.

Ironheade yep, the turret ring wasn't big enough. I think the short barrel had a smaller breech so it could fit inside the ring?
@MadnerKami
@MadnerKami 7 жыл бұрын
@Ironheade That is exactly what happened. The turret-ring's size of the Pz IV was noticibly wider than that of the III, which allowed the Pz IV to be more easily adopted to later developments of the ever increasing gun-sizes.

Very interesting! I actually wrote my thesis on German-Russian cooperation on tanks in the interwar period. I came across a unique report from a German officer who went to the Kama tankschool in Kazan, who was one of the few students at the school who survived the war. If you guys at the Tank Museum are interested, I have a digitalized copy which would probably make a nice addition to your archive. Let me know! I'd be happy to send it to you.

I heard of a funny story involving the Kazan tank cooperation. The Germans brought over some of their test designs relatively late in the cooperative effort and the Soviet officers asked "where were the heavier tanks". The Germans said that those were the heaviest ones ready for production. Leaving the Soviets to think they were lying, but in fact it was the truth.
@TheNordhammer
@TheNordhammer 7 жыл бұрын
@FedorovAvtomat The Soviets were a few years ahead of the Germans in terms of tank designs and the tactics & operational use of armored units. While the Soviets would reach for a universal tank-T-34 and Germans fell into splitting their tanks into the Pz III & Pz IV. And the Soviets would produce a heavy tank-KV-1 long before the Tiger I.
