Assault guns did not have turrets so they were easier to mass produce for German industry. Tanks required more resources to produce. The Stug III was the German’s leading tank killer yet had no turret. Over 10000 were produced, more than any other tracked vehicle - including the Panzer IV

What a fine design the Ferdinand was, no machine gun, no periscope or other visual aid for the commander, slow as constipated shit and unreliable to boot (Das Boot?)

Just to clarify guys, the Panzerkampfwagen VII was the “Lowe”, a super-heavy tank, which like the The Panzerkampfwagen VIII “Maus”, never made it into production. The Tiger 2 was still designated Panzerkampfwagen VI, the same as the Tiger 1. The Ferdinand/Elefant, definitely suffered from extremely poor crew visibility, non-existent close quarters defence (no machine guns), with only STG44 assault rifles poked through holes to provide any chance against Soviet troops attaching demolition charges to it.

Kortana is right - lack of turret means the mechanism doesn't have to fit within the turret ring, allowing a bigger gun and more space to recoil from high velocity shots. That is why (for example) the StugIII has a 75mm but the Panzer III on the same chassis only goes up to a 50mm.

I hope it's interesting to share, the terminology in British army (at least it was 25 years ago) for being inside the vehicle with hatches closed down vs hatch open and exposed is "head in" and "head out".

Tank destroyers were generally lighter than the tank that they were based on so were a little faster than the tank despite using the same chassis, and cheaper to make. Later versions had a machine gun mounted as they were found to be venerable to infantry attacks

Tank killers had no true turrets for several reasons; turret rings had a max diameter for allied forces, were a production bottleneck (with the turrets), imposed weapon size limits, etc. Full multi-man, battle-worthy turrets in general seem to be a level of complexity that were the limiting factor for tank production speed; both sides produced many more chassis of any type, than tanks. Also, tank destroyers are designed as tactically defensive, generally; Tanks are for offense. Destroyers are designed for static, ambush from cover scenario's. Shoot, hopefully win, scoot.

@tobiasfreitag2182

The Ferdinand wasn't a tank, it was a tankdestroyer. And the majorety survived the battle of Kursk to be send back to the nibelungenwerke in Linz to be refurbished and modified. (They amongst other things got comanders coupolas) After that they where send to italy where they saw quite a bit of action. A few where still operational the end of the war. Considering there very limited numbers, there technical unreliabilety and the heavy action they saw that is quite an acomplishment. When used in a correct way with Proper maintinance, Terrain that die not overstress there delikate drivetrain the where very effektive. So no they where no joke but it took quite a few things that had to come together to make them work the way intended. For that reason they are so controversial today. They could be terible and scarry effective. Depending in circumstances.

@@mhh7544 i would say that the picture is more complex than the Ferdinand just beeing crap,as you say. First of all the picture most people have of it is that of the battle of Kursk where it suffered teribly from its mechanical insuficencies. But if you care to read compare reports youu will find that so did the phanther. Bouth where deployed before they where ready for it. And bouth had pretty much the same Problems. Problems they share with almost every other german tank of the second half of the war. They all where overly complex, mechanicaly unreliabel, resorce hungry and maintainance heavy. The Ferdinand was not untypical for german vehicles of the Periode. He could, in the contary, be called a prime example of what is typical for german tanks of the time. They where a nightmare to Deal with as crewmember but when everything worked they where great. Problem is that the rearly did. But thats also true for the Tigers and Panthers. To be honest the just should have build more panzer 4 and stugs.
