Nine months after British and French forces rolled their tanks onto the Western Front in World War I, Germany readied a wholly new kind of counter-weapon. Driven by the shocking and surprise appearance of a new mechanized foe, German generals contracted Waffenfabrik Mauser AG to build the first anti-tank rifle of its kind in history. It was the only such weapon used during World War I. The Germans made sure to distribute as many as could be manufactured to its soldiers, producing around 15,800 of them, to the point that they became the terror of tanks on the Allied side.

I remember on my high school graduation test I had a question that was about who occupied mexico during a certain time period ( I dont remember the exact date right now) however hes saying that if you went with the REAL history that was backed by REAL facts... basically the correct answer would not have matched what really happened in history. There was a few questions that out history teacher (which he actually taught us the REAL facts in history) he told us the "correct" answer so that we would get the credit for the question on our high school graduation test. Basically the schools "right" answer was wrong when matched up to history backed by real facts

@@eveflash733 Basically saying historical FACTS tell us that the right answer is "B" but according to the state's curriculum the right answer is "D." The teacher tells us the "correct" answer for the test because (in my case a he) or she doesnt want us to choose the "wrong" answer on the test even though it truly is not the correct answer. Even in college when I was getting my Paramedicine Diploma the instructor gave us the "Most right answer" even though it was not truly the right answer. The National Registery (who does the state test to become licensed as a paramedic in each state) is trying to feed you false information of an actual event. Just like in high school they wont tell you that George Washington the first president of the United states of America was a slave owner.... Back in the 1970s I knew a guy who sold mobile homes. He had moved out an old trailer and found one of these rifles in the back yard. He bought it for $25.00 and it came with 2 rounds. The stock was charred from a fire, the bipod was missing and it was rusted all to hell from being let outside for years. He offered it to me for $250.00 and I stupidly passed on the deal. The only other one I have seen was at Aberdeen Proving Grounds museum in Maryland. I should have bought it.

Yeah a .50BMG bolt action with no break is horrific to the user and the Tankgehwehr 18 fired a round quite a bit larger in terms of case capacity and a bit bigger in terms of projectile weight. It would have been terrible to use. I'm thinking the second man in the team was also there to reset the shooters shoulder every time it dislocated. I wonder if they ever got round to putting a break on it? At 42 pounds with a break it would have been quite manageable.

The Germans were slow to introduce the anti tank rifle because they thought at first that their standard AP rifle rounds were quite capable of penetrating the early MkIV's. This was solely because of General Haig's insistence that every MkIV should be rushed to the front for the big push. 'Every' also included all the tanks built as training vehicles which should have been kept in England. The battle tanks for the front were built with hardened steel plating which was bullet proof but the training tanks although identical were built with cheaper standard boiler plating which wasn't! The poor crews of those tanks were doomed from the start but their sacrifice convinced the Germans there was no need to design a heavy weapon as the existing rounds were quite sufficient. The assault on the Messines Ridge finally proved that their standard rounds actually couldn't stop the 'proper' MkIV's (the trainers had all been knocked out by then and all the tanks were by now built with strengthened armour plating.)

Tanks: roll in and can't be destroyed by rifle fire German solution: just shoot them with a bigger rifle. Gotta love the simple logic.
@Edax_Royeaux
@Edax_Royeaux 4 жыл бұрын
Didn't work, you still can't destroy a tank with bullets. Best case, you injure enough of the crew to stop the tank. A lot of French tanks return back to their own lines wondering why there were suddenly so many holes in their armor. It was only later they discovered the tank rifles. Though I guess as a fringe benefit, you might be able capture a tank since the rifle doesn't destroy them.
@JH-lo9ut
@JH-lo9ut 3 жыл бұрын
The MK IV tank had a crew of like 8 people in there... And it's the size of a bus! You'd think you had to shoot a lot of bullets at it before it was knocked out. On the other hand, engines back then were so damn unreliable that they could probably be disabled in a hundred ways. The engine sits in the middle of the thing, not in a compartment separate from the crew. For example, the exhaust manifold of the MKIV tank engine is this huge system of pipes reaching up over the engine itself. It should be quite easy to puncture one of those pipes, wich should lead to the tank filling up with carbon monoxide in a minute. You puncture a fuel line and the thing fills up with explosive gasoline fumes. These tanks were constructed and built in a hurry, with very little thought put in to what would happen if the armor plate was actually penetrated.
@JH-lo9ut
@JH-lo9ut 3 жыл бұрын
@@Edax_Royeaux do you mean those little Renault tanks? They are like like two guys in a tank costume! The gunner/commander is basically sitting on the shoulders of the driver, who's sitting on top of the engine. It's a miracle they could shoot a bullet through that thing without the crew noticing.
@Edax_Royeaux

@@JH-lo9ut The pictures I saw were holes in a Schneider CA1. I sort of doubt a tankgewehr could penetrate a FT tank, it had far more armor then a Mark IV tank and a lot of the armor plates were angled. The Schneider was just essentially a box on treads with half the armor of a FT.

My grandfather also gave me a huge empty, fired casing. I don't know what exact size it is but I believe it's around 20mm or something like that. That thing was probably fired from an aircraft gun. My grandfather served in the German Airforce for many years (he started in the late 50s I think) and I think that's where the casing is from. It's a really impressive object. @@detroxx56784 If it is second world war or later 20mm would be my guess. There were a few different 20mm rounds in WW2 though as the allies and axis used different sized rounds. Measure the neck diameter and if it is around 20mm it would be a 20mm. They weren't really common in US aircraft in WW2 though as they were mostly armed with .50 machine guns. The Commonwealth forces and axis used them a lot though. There were a couple of notable US aircraft that used canons though like the P38 lightning (20mm) and P39 airacobra (37mm)

@@chrisbrent7487 I'll give it a look. I think it's 20mm but it could also be 22 or 18 or something like that. May grandfather didn't fight in WW2 since he was just 10 years old or so back then. Also the shell has something that looks a bit like a blue plastic ring around it's "ignitor". I don't know the English word for that. But this and my grandfather's army background makes me conclude that it must be an aircraft casing from the 60s or 70s. He also owns a couple of ~50mm and ~100mm casings. Empty of course. He told me that he and his friends used to collect the stuff they found that was left behind by the soldiers. They eventually had a whole arsenal of stuff including multiple MG42s and other guns. They gave them away later so that they could be scraped. Pretty insane what the kids back then used as toys.

In this case the guy is standing upright while a machinegunner behind cover is shot by an oncoming tank and infantry. Of course its fake. As part of the California Army National Guard State Rifle Team for competitive shooting we flew up to a Guard Base in Oregon. There they gave us a private tour of the small museum and let us tour the racks of weapons not on public display. There I saw and was lucky enough to hold a M1918 Tankgewehr. It was a hefty rifle to be sure, with its plain stock and barrel it looked like an oversized .22. There was no special design in it, just take a stock rifle and go BIG. Having shot Barrett M82's and M107's several times since, I couldn't imagine the PAIN that the shooter would have to deal with. Barrett's have a muzzle brake that reportedly takes out 70% or so of the recoil. You would have to be one DEDICATED Soldier to go up against a tank assault with a rifle, especially one that promised to break your shoulder if you weren't careful. SSG. Do you think he's heard that one before? This guy makes high quality content. All his videos, people remark on the way he's talking. I've done it too, I must admit. It sure is fast, but i guess that's the way he speaks. It's not that easy to change the way one speak. Remarks of that kind has always discouraged brilliant people from sharing their knowledge and opinions. A lot of content creators, especially those with a rough accent resort to using a robot narrator instead, and that' just awful to listen to. Give some credit to the quality of the creators work, together with your critique if you absolutely must critique them. Try .75x playback speed if you have trouble hearing what he says.
