The M4A4 FL-10 was one of the last major modifications of the US Medium Tank, M4 in the mid-1950s. This modification was carried out by France for Egypt, which needed a more powerful vehicle to counter the fierce Israeli armored forces, which, although inferior in numbers, were superior in firepower and training.

@@MrHSwager Obsolescent is not obsolete. By that time its original purpose could no longer be fulfilled to a reasonable degree, which would be infantry support and AT capacity. Protection, ergonomics and mobility were not strong suits in the first place due to a 4-speed gearbox and only 45mm of frontal armour. In Korea, it was obsolescent. The Shermans at the time were already dangerous as an opponent, but the t-34 could still perform infantry support since the early bazookas could not penetrate it. It is now obsolete. Any child soldier with an RPG-7 can blow it up from afar.

Why not? France didn't lose by either side losing. Israel was not committed to conquering its neighbors, so if it won, the status quo remained, meaning more sales to both sides. If the anti-Israeli Coalition won, well the French still got the oil and more contracts for weapons because those allies would soon turn on each other because they all hated each other almost as much as they all hated Israel. France, in other words, was a neutral supplier with desirable product. USA also sold weapons to both sides for the same reason.

This is the first time I' see this strange variant. Weren't afraid of friendly fire dangers? Therefore this was an attestation of Shermans' hulls adaptability, contrary to british ones. The principal drawback of the turrets' design was the few rounds in the rear, it's a little difficult to recharge your loading system during a firefight!

I wonder if the FL-10 could be uparmored by having flat or semi circular plates sticking straight up in front of it attached to the rotating collar, with a slot for guns and sight to see through? Easily. Tho the tank still would be an incredibly fat and slow AMX13. Also in the cold war era you dont need armor as thick as an M4 has cause less 37-57mm guns are used. You want 20-40mm or 100-200mm.

If they had just dug a deeper hole the height would not be an issue... If they had committed the resources necessary to field them properly and actually exercis ed a bit they would have been quite effective.... The turret armour issue could be solved with a simple bolt on armour kit which would provide good enough protection vs infantry cannon... I cannot remember whether India did this... I remember a wargame long ago when I played the Indian side and had my shermans upgraded similur to this... but don't know if they did in real life....

very disappointed in the wording of the report. repeatedly calling izzy occupation of Egyptian lands "liberation" as if Egypt is an occupied Israeli land by Egyptians ? Also, if Egypt lost the 1956 war, it wouldn't have kept its lands. Read the book Key to the Sinai by George Walter Gawrych to avoid making the war look like a fast blitzkrieg when in reality the israeli forces were stopped in their tracks and did not achieve their objectives, which led to the british and french forces intervening opening a second front and losing the element of conspiracy of masking their intervention as peacekeeping, which led to the sailure of the tripartite invasion. very disappointed in the writing by a group i once was very proud to be part of, taking an ideological side, describing the occupations of their chosen side as "liberation" and the liberation by the other side as occupations.. along with twisting the historical narrative to a very narrow ideological point of view. you should know better. you normally know better.

Perhaps its corruption? Do the officers rob the training budget, the cooks sell the ration and the men steal the gasoline?
