Anatomy of a Fake Tank | M-20UP1

In today’s era of rapid information dissemination, media outlets often prioritize being the first to report rather than ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in their coverage. In such conditions, verifying the credibility of news stories can be a daunting task, especially in the face of bad-faith actors. At times, whether due to negligence or misplaced trust, the processes and checks meant to safeguard against such issues fail, resulting in incorrect or outright fabricated information being taken at face value. This, in turn, triggers a domino effect, with the misinformation gaining credibility from its reporters, and spreading further until it is universally treated as fact.
In 2015, Serbian media outlets disseminated news regarding the development of a new, advanced, modular domestic tank, designed by a new team of engineers and presented at the 2015 Partner Fair in Belgrade. Although the story lacked detailed information, it featured interviews with multiple alleged designers and even 3D renders of the new vehicle, presenting the appearance of a genuine project. The fact that it was published by multiple large Serbian and international news agencies further boosted its credibility, fooling many into falling for it, including us.

Sorry about that! I was the one who created that tank, and it was done just before the reveal of T-14 (2015). I was talking to a friend of mine back than and on some forums, and through chat we kind of made WHAT-IF project. It was just creative enterprise and didn't meant to be more than that (what-if). I made model and renders, did some interesting compositing VFX, just to kind of better visualize project, to make it more grounded, realistic. Unfortunately not long after that it all blew out of proportions, as it ended up in some tabloid or something and story went from there. Sorry about that confusion again.

I mean its an normal human reaction, to whish the best, strive to the best. But sadly there is no reality check involved in much of these. I did not catch on these up until few years back, because life happened, but it was too late for any kind of straighten things up. But maybe at least in this instance, some of it will be remedied. Certain media can’t, and some simply won’t, *when it doesn’t fit their owner’s agenda* Clearly show a video of multiple T-90s with the turret ejection system activated; or the *quite sudden* use of the Moskva cruiser for an artificial reef, and it’s fake (or unreported) news all over Russia and their few allied nations. While R/T was very happy to show off the Qahir-313 as an example of Russia sharing its “Stealth Technology” with allies. Then a week later denouncing every Russian outlet that exposed the 313s as the very obvious fibreglass toys they were.

Nah... I wouldn't call it fooling people. We have the know-how. But we lack finances, that's the main issue. I mean, we( Serbia) did wonders with the licence for the T-72. Heck we even exported recently old highly modified T-55 to some other countries ( arguably I'd keep them ).

Hm... what would be so expensive to prevent M20 UP1 and UP2 becoming a reality? IFVs based on MBTs isn't that unheard of (cf Leopard 2/Marder 2, the latter alas never being built, or the Red Chinese concepts), and Diesel-Electric propulsion also isn't that bad of an idea.

I was actively writing on that forum during those years, and this story was really fun to watch and participate in it´s development. The naming of the platform, and the complete work was a nice try to be engaged in the fooling of those newspapers. So, the naming is typical for the military hardware in serbian army M-20UP1 stands for M-model 20 - planned year of issue (2020.), UP - universal platform, 1 - version 1.

This is a lesson to the media that when writing about something as esoteric as tank design and production, ALWAYS contact an expert, or better yet, several experts to verify, verify, verify. amateur enthusiasts are harder to fool than "proffessional journalists" and even then i expect that many would have believed it but still criticised elements such as the dependence on electric motors for each roadwheel (knowing what happened to the "landtrain" in alaska, they have potential as auxiliary drivers or if they can be disengaged individually and mechanically from the drivetrain to prevent roadwheels jamming in place and or reduce friction on the functional motors.

The combination of engine - generator - electric motor is my suggestion. The reason is that 50% of failures are related to the transmission. This change would reduce the number of failures by 40%. Currently, VTI is testing the BVP M80 with an electric motor with the help of a transmission as a first step in that direction. KZbin channel Pakleni Vuk announced it in the comments. The idea is not new and has been used for a long time in dump trucks, submarines and locomotives. I think it's about analyzing what such a tank would look like and the production possibilities.

Hello, I hope you get to see this comment. Electric transmission, aka bundle of a generator coupled to the engine and electric motors driving the wheels, is actually a great though expensive idea. The very first benefit is it mechanically disconnects the engine from the wheels, giving it freedom of movement and floating. This means no matter how the tanks maneuvers or falls or break or whatever, the engine (and the absent gearbox) will not be affected. In other words, good by broken transmission/engine. The second advantage is that electric motors coupled with proper alternator are only limited to the input power and not the input torque. This means engineers can choose high rev, relatively low torque high horse power engine instead of slow diesel engines. Thus the vehicle can have more horsepower. The third advantage is the reverse speed which is the same as the forward. And for those accustomed to Russian tanks that's a dream. And forth, is one or a couple of road wheels and motors are taken out, the vehicle can still move by the others and not sit there and wait for its death.

Take a note that remote turret, with crew in hull. Is actually nothing new. Americans test Abrams TTB in the 90's. And concept itself was deigned earlier and almost enter service in Ukraine. But the technology was not yet there. Currently everything indicate that fallow up to Abrams X (what expand idea with hybrid transmission, 30mm CIWS and hull vision) would become next generation of Abrams or next-gen tank. Europeans work basically on the same. Russians lost basic skills in warfare long time ago. They can't even make own strategical drones.

The 3D modeler designed the M-20PU1 with the intent that it could plausibly be produced in Serbia, which is why many spare parts, such as the carousel autoloader, gun, and road wheels, are reused from the M-84 MBT.

You can't blame yourself for falling for this. Had I seen it when it was first being circulated, I would have fallen for it too, just like everybody else. It is an amazingly well-made fraud, and to be honest, a fantastic tank design, save for the drivetrain. Perhaps Serbia will take some cues from this and incorporate them into a future real project? Sure would be a hell of a story to have a tank go from an amusing fake to the real deal!

Serbia is small country that doesn't have industry to produce tanks, well it had during Yugoslavia ironically only whole Yugoslavia together can build a tank because factories that were meant to produce tanks were built all over Yugoslavia so optics in Bosnia, tank assembly in Croatia, many other parts in Serbia barrels for example..... largest institutes for testing weapons and engineering were in Serbia, as well as wind tunnels for testing aerodynamics

The difference is that an actual concept/design tank created by a legitimate entity like a company or agency for whatever reason, may it be concept, technology Demonstrator or actual production and so its a legitimate design. On the other hand, a fake tank can be created by anyone with the goal of appearing as a genuine design and causes situations like the one presented in the video.

I've seen a supposed Serbian tank destroyer on a 122mm self propelled gun chassis, and thought this was just a Serbian concept design, but also doubted the Serbs would create a new tank specially with them westernizing most of their equipment. They are more likely to buy a leopard 2 in the future instead of making their own.

Serbia currently makes: -Light MRAP M16 Miloš -MRAP M20 -FAP M21 Armored Personnel Carriers -Lazar 3 and 3M Armored Personnel Carriers -Multiple versions of Nora 152mm self-propelled howitzer -LRSVM M-18 Oganj -PASARS-16 short range air defence system -FAP produces multiple different trucks for the army -Zastava cars produces different light vehicles for the army In addition there are multiple ongoing modernization projects (such as for the M-84 tank and M-80A IFV) and multiple prototypes being developed (Lazanski IFV, HARPAS SPAAG, Tamnava & Sumadija MLRS) Corruption is a problem sure but you are being overly harsh.

Pravi se jedna PASARS-16 baterija godišnje, do sad je napravljeno pet. Na sve to moramo da dodamo da ista preduzeća uporedno troše kapacitete na razvijanje novog oružija i modernizaciju postojećeg. Koja druga država sa ekonomijom veličine Srbije masovno proizvodi složene borbene sisteme? Grička koja ima skoro pa 4x veći BDP ne može da proizvede obične rakete, kupuje ih od nas.

Tanks are obsolete. $300 FPV drone with a mortar shell strapped beneath it can destroy or immobilize a tank from 5km+ away. Whoever making and designing new tanks in 2024 should think about changing his profession. The one who invests in smaller, lighter, quicker, autonomous and more powerful weapons is doing the right thing. Not larger, slower and more expensive..

@TrassseB I worked an that project. It is T 72 but much more improved. Factory BNT,and hundreds made 300% better than T 72. When civile wars started in Yugoslavia ,NATO first occupied military Factory of Yugoslavia and took all paperwork of project. 42 tonnes of M 84 compared to 72 of NATO tanks ,did you tell something. T34 destroyed best Nazi Germany tanks during the World war.
