I think the people that are saying "oh wow Muse is hard now" or "I've never heard Muse go this hard" haven't heard their earlier catalogue, namely Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry, and Absolution. As a fan of those albums above all their others, this new song is a very welcome return. Muse all day.

100%. But then again, a lot of those people doing (so called) reactions seem to not really listen to music outside of youtube that much. And while I find it entertaining to watch sometimes, if some people go totally crazy about one song, love it, best stuff I've ever heard, that will be on repeat for days, and then take two months before they "react" to the next song from that band... if I find a song that I love, I'll probably be through that bands discography before the day is over. Those people seem to have a weird way to approach music. Tank is a welcome exception, hardly ever reaction to anything that isn't either new or kind of obscure.

@realtealcovers2322 жыл бұрын
@@buckfuttler2877 those screams aren’t “black metal” imo. It’s just a standard rock scream with a lot of saturation on it. My statement is meant to convey that people who’ve not heard earlier material from Muse will think this is heavy compared to songs like Starlight, Uprising, Madness, etc. Which compared to those songs, yes it’s heavier with more distorted guitars. But screaming doesn’t automatically make a song “heavier” to me. It just fit the vibe of the song. It’s an amazing track and I enjoy it a lot. But I think Tank had a great point that it was being overhyped a bit. Muse has proven they can do the hard rock sound better than most. And they did so before this song.

I also thought - immideately when that riff came - that the heavyness of that sound is coming much more from the bass than from the guitars. The guitar sound is good, but it shows Matt's love for fuzz pedals rather than going with a modern high gain guitar sound. I like that a lot.

As a hardcore Muse fan, I completely agree with everything you said. I think the reason so many people are reacting the way they are is literally just because the previous album from Muse was probably a contender for their least heavy and most "poppy". I loved the album for what it's worth, but I get that it's not what a lot of other fans want from Muse (that's actually another reason I really respect Muse - they make the albums they feel like making without pandering to their fanbase with the same stuff over and over). Muse has done plenty of "heavier" stuff in the past, but it's just that the sound of this new single is like night and day compared to the last album they released. I will say that those types of screams are different for them, and pretty cool too. But yeah, I definitely feel like a lot of people are way over hyping how "heavy" this song is. In a lot of ways, it feels like people are just generally too fixated on the heaviness in general- it's totally understandable if someone prefers heavy music, but Muse is the kind of band where if that's all you're after you just need to look elsewhere. You'll occasionally get some heavy songs like this one or Stockholm Syndrome, but as you kind of pointed out even those are really just heavy in the context of Muse's catalogue. If you're into metal, thrash, and generally very heavy music then it makes total sense that this doesn't quite live up to how "insanely heavy" the song is made out to be. If you listen to bands where "heaviness" is like their signature, then the kind of hype around how hard this song is will absolutely not measure up to what you expect when you hear stuff like that. But I really liked this song. I like heavy music but honestly I don't listen to much "real" heavy music these days. Like Muse, The Mars Volta and System of a Down is pretty much the heaviest stuff I listen to frequently (with maybe some Rage Against the Machine, Porcupine Tree, and Tool thrown in occasionally). I enjoy seeing Muse go back to a heavier style, but I'm not exactly foaming at the mouth for it. I've liked pretty much every direction Muse has gone in, at this point I just want them to keep making music I enjoy regardless of how it sounds. Especially hearing this single, I feel confident they will. I wouldn't exactly call it an A-lister track, but it's definitely a strong one that has definitely made it's way into my Muse playlists.

You are completely correct Tank, this is the heavier end of Muse but not really a significant departure. They have always incorporated ‘heavy’ elements and great riffs (especially bass riffs ) into their music but unlike you who had clearly heard some of their songs before, I don’t think a lot of Metal heads had really listened to them before and presumably thought they had a cleaner and softer sound. I can only think therefore that they were surprised at how heavy Muse can be and overreacted because of that. I don’t think there is any danger of Muse becoming a Metalcore band. Part of their success is their amalgamation of musical styles and genres into a form that is broadly liked by a huge number of people, they go heavy but not so far as to scare the horses, they go classical but not so much as to lose that current feel, they merge, they blend and they present in such a way that the end result is always characteristically Muse but leave the people who wish to categorise them in a specific genre, scratching their head. I for one love it but It’s Muse not Metalcore.

But for me it's more about the song itself (aside from where on the heavy metter it's placed 😅) that I totally love. Probably the hype on social media is more due to the fact that they gained lots of new fans around 2009 when The Resistance album came out and it was a somewhat mellow-er album, so not many people know or remember Oos or Absolution era Muse. About cinematic videos, a great one is Helloween's Skyfall, the first single of their new album. Looks like a Ironman movie trailer. Complete with spaceships and aliens. When you're in the mood for a fun one, Tank... Pity it's a 7minute cut. If you ever want to go way back, take a look at Queen's two first albums, proto-power metal that sounds like Rainbow more than anything!

Agree. You recognize it's them, because it sounds different of what they did, but you can immediately recognize some usual Muse stuff . I love them also for that. There aren't 2 albums sounding exactly the same. But in global, they all sound Muse

So I gave up on muse like 13 yrs ago...this song & "kill or be killed" could bring me back a bit. Agree that the MUSIC isn't significantly heavier than stuff I can think of from early albums...but the screeching in this song & the growls from "kill" ARE significantly different, unless MB has done something like that on some song from the last 10 yrs & I just didn't hear it.

Muse fan since Unintended and although i like their more commercial stuff as well this is the Muse i've always loved. I never felt like what most reactors were going bonkers about. To me, first listen... reaction... Yes Muse is back 🤷♀

This is the heaviest I've heard them in years this is fantastic

IMHO... I think they nailed the formula. I've never heard them (or at least afaik). But it caught me off guard. Definitely in my next personal mix tape ;)

Thank you for reacting even if it's not your cup of tea. I just love Muse and I love, that you are telling what you think about it. You are a great guy. 🤗

Oh, THIS kind of Muse is my cup of tea. Reminds me of when I was listening to them in the early 2000's.

Excellent band Muse, Matt B is a highly underrated vocalist too 👏

I didn't even think of it as a metal song when I heard it. I just thought of it as a heavy rock song. I'm sad you got overhyped by people misleading you. I absolutely love it for what it really is, though, and I'm glad you appreciate it, too

Old Muse fan here, and I completely agree with you on this. If anything, the surprise comes from the fact that we were not expecting a return to that sound at that point of their carrer, especially after Simulation Theory. But their choice of playing a "metal medley" during the ST tour was probably a hint, in hindsight. And if people mentionned Stockholm Syndrome already, don't forget Dead Star and Micro Cuts. Micro Cuts Hullaballo's version even featured metal screams. Granted, it was not a single, and it's on a live version, but it's not a deep cut either. I think (I might be wrong) but the "extra heaviness" of Won't Stand Down seems largely due to the production (compared to the Micro Cuts album version's, which was... not that great ^^)

This is another great video from you, Tank! I always love your consistency as you react to the music and the performances. I have to admit, the last time I heard Muse was their “Knights of Cydonia” (from the Guitar Hero/Rock Band days, lol), and yeah, relatively speaking, “Won’t Stand Down” is a lot heavier, but I get what you mean by how it still sounds like Muse, even to a “filthy” casual like me. 😂 If Muse have been gravitating towards this sound over the years, I think I will check out more of their music. You also got me listening to Persefone again, so thank you for that as well. I mean, isn’t that one of the purposes of these reaction videos? Thanks so much, Tank!

You have given the most honest review out of most reactors, almost all of them play it up saying they have never heard of the band and there shocked, then you look through there videos and then I find other muse reactions on there channel. So for me I have been a muse fan since the beginning however I do prefer there heavier work/ a few of there dub step base drops occasionally chucked In on top. Random thought in the top of my head writing that I would love to see avatar do a Dub step track, not to different to the circus metal vibe. My rating of each album done in 25% peices. Showbiz 75% Origin 100% Hullabaloo 100% Absolution 100% Blackholes 75% Resistance 25% 2nd law 75% Drones 50% Simulation 0% (I cant get in to a single) song) This new track reminds me of amix of 1st 3 albums (maybe alittle bit of drones also)

Totally with you TtT, Drones was a pretty heavy record, I remember that one Muse album was released we always had Their singles on PT radios, and with Drones not a single one. This song could have been in that record. Great song, from a Great Band!

It seems most folk completely miss the relevance behind the lyrics. The track has another title; 'Living Vicariously', & may be better described by a phrase 'Psychological Warfare' - from the song itself. It's about a world-wide psychological battle between a few old men (dude in wheel chair) & the mindless pawns (represented by those under his control). So the one singing the words is standing firm; outside the visuals - getting stronger by refusing to 'stand down', which is what he would be doing by surrendering to the systemic game of manipulation by the slave-master over the masses of hapless pawns. A great song with incredibly intelligent lyrics by a most relevant band indeed😄

I'd agree, this is pretty much what I'd expect from Muse, with the caveat being that I've found them very hit or miss since The Resistence and this is definitely one of their better songs over the last 10 or so years. I'm surprised people are talking up how heavy the song is, I mean I think Hysteria and Stockholm Syndrome are still their heaviest songs and they were on 2003's Absolution album (and a brilliant album that was).

This is a typical "Origin of Symmetry" song, which is a damn good thing because that album is still their best IMO! :)

I think a lot of reactors have never listened heavy Muse's stuff. That's why that sound is surprising for them.

frankly, beside this, i know only "Hysteria" and i just love this song it's just a wall basher if the earlier stuff is similar or else, i think i'll try this rabbit hole ;)

"Apocalypse Please" is to this day my favorite Muse song, if you haven't heard it yet, Tank, check it. I was kinda into Muse and even had tickets to a concert I never got to attend. I dropped off fir a bit. This song kicks pretty damn hard. I'm impressed. The breakdown might feature the only instance of Muse growling or screaming in some capacity. I could be wrong. I'm not familiar with anything more than the iconic clean vocals

I love this song and direction (if there is a direction to that kind of music). Btw I don't mind recent albums - I love them too. But in case of "awesome breakdowns" my favorite still is the one in Assassin from 2015 live in Mayan (did you see it? Maybe react to it?)
@gingergomoto87872 жыл бұрын
I agree that the heavy element has been perhaps slightly over hyped. That’s coming from a massive muse fan. It’s heavy-ish and it has that feeling of earlier albums/songs. I can only assume that people who think it was super heavy or a totally new muse sound have probably not explored all of their albums. Almost every muse album has a heavy song or two but what will be interesting is if this coming album is packed with heavy songs (which it sounds like it might be). I love the song and I can’t wait for the new album.
