The power and meaning behind the line “I saw the end of war”, when the famous quote goes “only the dead have seen the end of war”. Sabaton really know how to hit you with a single line, similar to “oh mothers wipe your tears, your sons will rest a million years” from Cliffs Of Gallipoli.

The weird thing about white friday: It wasn't a friday. Also, the avalanches were supposedly triggered on purpose, with both sides firing artillery into the snow banks above the enemy's camps. White friday is the deadliest snow-ice-avalanche in history, beaten out overall only by a single mudslide according to wikipedia.

Lest we forget. What a beautiful song. The lyric "I have seen it all, but none will hear my story." is so powerful. It gets me every time. So many stories that would be otherwise lost to history. Sabaton allows these unsung heroes to be recognized and remembered.

I was actually hoping this year or next year to get to Europe for one of their concerts. Was thinking about doing the Sabaton Open Air in Sweden or going to Germany since I was learning German, but will see how things go in the world if I'll be able to make that happen. Also, nothing wrong with a song being a grower. I've had other songs from Sabaton or other bands where it took a couple times of listening before I ended up loving it.

Two of my great-grandfathers actually fought on the eastern Alps durin WWI (battle of Monte Grappa among others), so I love Sabaton even more for writing a song about it. I live in the area myself and there are still today many hiking trails that follow WWI trenches all over these mountains and it's quite common to find remnants of that time. At the same time, I agree with you that it's not one of those Sabaton songs that punch you straight in the guts. I think it's probably because the lyrics don't tell a specific story so it's kinda harder to feel it on an emotional level... i guess... Still a great song, though... I'm waiting to see them live, too... I don't normally go to concerts but I feel like witnessing Sabaton live is something I have to do in my lifetime ❤

The "White Friday" they mention in the song refers to December 13 1916, when massive avalanches killed thousands of soldiers on both sides, and these avalanches were intentionally triggered by both sides by firing on snowfields above their enemies. I do not know why that day was called "White Friday" as it was a wednesday, but the name dates back to 1916.
@Kullioking
@Kullioking 2 жыл бұрын
On December 13 only one avalanch was reportet that killed 270 austro hungarians, by the start of the nest day more avalanches and deaths on both side including civilians are reportet. At least in the austrian war reports in the austrian staat archive.
@derubor
@derubor 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kullioking There are conflicting accounts of that day. You can't trust just one source on this. Most sources speak of multiple, intentionally triggered avalanches with thousands of deaths. Of course the Austro-Hungarians wanted to downplay the events from that day, because telling the truth and admitting what they did would definitely tank morale at home and on any other front they fought. Because soldiers were equipped to protect themselves from technically anything the enemy threw at them, but no one could protect themselves from tons and tons of snow and stone roaring down a mountain side.

I heard Joakim say about this song, yes we made a new song with a sing a long chorus.. a couple of diffrent things in this song, from usual Sabaton, the electronics and the relative slow drum pattern, is 2 thigs i think stick out, and a pretty good guitar solo.. I also heard Hannes point out a few other songs on new album, where he gets to use kickdrum, and faster drum patterns some more..

I personally think most of the new album is made to be played live which is amazing.. more and more bands do that but Sabaton always write one or two songs specially to hype the crowd on shows. Also as always i have to say thank you to Sabaton not only because of the music but for the history lessons. Lot of the stories they tell are not that easy to dig out as people think. And without them lot of us would never know about those events or heroes,

Met Sabaton on their first UK tour (supporting DragonForce and Edguy in 2005). Heard Primo Victoria and knew I needed to hear more... Met the band and got a signed album by all of them! But Par was the one guy that I remember, so enthusiastic and such a generous guy. Would have had a soft spot for them even if there music wasn't as epic as it is! During World War I, the Dolomites were the site of a confrontation between the Austro-Hungarian army and the Kingdom of Italy. In both, 150-180 thousand were killed. people, including as many as 60 thousand, were devoured by avalanches. At the amount of 2 thousand. meters, the snow cover of the winter of 1916/1917 was 6 meters, by 3,000 meters - as much as 9. The shots caused avalanches that swept the soldiers into the abyss. Thousands of people died of cold and hunger, because it was simply impossible to deliver supplies to some positions. The worst was Friday, December 13, 1916, when a sudden thaw and heavy rain followed after the great frosts. Great sheets of snow rushed from the slopes of the mountains and buried troops. The biggest tragedy happened in the Marmolada massif near Gran Poz, where the cable car ended and an Austrian military camp was set up. In a matter of minutes, an avalanche killed 300 soldiers. Their bodies had been carried downstairs for many months. The balance of people killed by avalanches on this unfortunate day on both sides is 10,000. people, which to this day is considered the greatest mountain tragedy caused by avalanches.

Right having driven tour trucks in Europe for over ten years here’s my opinion. European rock and metal festivals blow the rest of the world out the water. Not just my opinion numerous artists have told me so. Obviously Wacken open air is a must, but here’s a few more you really should check out for there lineups but also the atmosphere and facilities Hellfest in France is probably my favourite, they literally build a village in a field, they get awesome bands AND they even build a skatepark abs a zip line that goes over the crowd, incredible. Sweden rocks for a chance to buy a tactical kilt (trust me there awesome) Avoid UK festivals, brits think they are great but they really are not, there are obviously a lot more , A LOT but they are the big daddies that will face the best spread

What beautiful song about a horrifying event. Besides the Story I really dig the "techy" 80ish sounds in this track. (Kinda like the last "Beast in Black"-tracks)

Agree, it also took me some time to love the song. As you said, it will grow into ya. I just love the 80s kinda sound and how the song is building up. The chorus is as always fantastic and the solo is simply amazing. Gotta say I love this channel. Tank is one of the best reactors I have come across. Cheers y’all !

I know it’s a bit of a late one but given how much you love this band you should react to the song “The last stand” it kicks ass

I agree. This song doesn’t bring anything new, it feels lika a B-side song to me. Even though it’s great lyrics which shed some light over a very forgotten war. On a side note. Tommy released a video of his own channel today. Swedish Pagans in a Disney version. Sooo good!

So far this is my least favourite song of Sabaton. I do hope it grows on me after I've seen it live.

Honestly, Sabaton's key changes hit different. Soldier of Heaven, Ghost in the Trenches, and Soldier of 3 Armies all give me goosebumps when the key changes hit. Every time!

the highest battle fought during the WWI was the Punta San Matteo Battle (Point Saint Mathew a Mountain in italy) between a bunch of italian and austrian soldiers in the summer of 1918 it was at the altitude of 3600m... we find still today in the alps corpses of soldiers of the WWI and many many of them are still buried in the ice of the mountains and it's a very sad sad thing
