The power and meaning behind the line “I saw the end of war”, when the famous quote goes “only the dead have seen the end of war”. Sabaton really know how to hit you with a single line, similar to “oh mothers wipe your tears, your sons will rest a million years” from Cliffs Of Gallipoli.

The weird thing about white friday: It wasn't a friday. Also, the avalanches were supposedly triggered on purpose, with both sides firing artillery into the snow banks above the enemy's camps. White friday is the deadliest snow-ice-avalanche in history, beaten out overall only by a single mudslide according to wikipedia.

Met Sabaton on their first UK tour (supporting DragonForce and Edguy in 2005). Heard Primo Victoria and knew I needed to hear more... Met the band and got a signed album by all of them! But Par was the one guy that I remember, so enthusiastic and such a generous guy. Would have had a soft spot for them even if there music wasn't as epic as it is! Remember going running the day after whilst listening to the album.... Had pounded out a mile in about half my usual time; almost collapsed! Seen them many times... Never disappointed!

Two of my great-grandfathers actually fought on the eastern Alps durin WWI (battle of Monte Grappa among others), so I love Sabaton even more for writing a song about it. I live in the area myself and there are still today many hiking trails that follow WWI trenches all over these mountains and it's quite common to find remnants of that time. At the same time, I agree with you that it's not one of those Sabaton songs that punch you straight in the guts. I think it's probably because the lyrics don't tell a specific story so it's kinda harder to feel it on an emotional level... i guess... Still a great song, though... I'm waiting to see them live, too... I don't normally go to concerts but I feel like witnessing Sabaton live is something I have to do in my lifetime ❤

Was thinking about doing the Sabaton Open Air in Sweden or going to Germany since I was learning German, but will see how things go in the world if I'll be able to make that happen. Also, nothing wrong with a song being a grower. I've had other songs from Sabaton or other bands where it took a couple times of listening before I ended up loving it.

During World War I, the Dolomites were the site of a confrontation between the Austro-Hungarian army and the Kingdom of Italy. In both, 150-180 thousand were killed. people, including as many as 60 thousand, were devoured by avalanches. At the amount of 2 thousand. meters, the snow cover of the winter of 1916/1917 was 6 meters, by 3,000 meters - as much as 9. The shots caused avalanches that swept the soldiers into the abyss. Thousands of people died of cold and hunger, because it was simply impossible to deliver supplies to some positions. The worst was Friday, December 13, 1916, when a sudden thaw and heavy rain followed after the great frosts. Great sheets of snow rushed from the slopes of the mountains and buried troops. The biggest tragedy happened in the Marmolada massif near Gran Poz, where the cable car ended and an Austrian military camp was set up. In a matter of minutes, an avalanche killed 300 soldiers. Their bodies had been carried downstairs for many months. The balance of people killed by avalanches on this unfortunate day on both sides is 10,000. people, which to this day is considered the greatest mountain tragedy caused by avalanches.

The "White Friday" they mention in the song refers to December 13 1916, when massive avalanches killed thousands of soldiers on both sides, and these avalanches were intentionally triggered by both sides by firing on snowfields above their enemies. I do not know why that day was called "White Friday" as it was a wednesday, but the name dates back to 1916.
@Kullioking2 жыл бұрын
On December 13 only one avalanch was reportet that killed 270 austro hungarians, by the start of the nest day more avalanches and deaths on both side including civilians are reportet. At least in the austrian war reports in the austrian staat archive.
@derubor2 жыл бұрын
@@Kullioking There are conflicting accounts of that day. You can't trust just one source on this. Most sources speak of multiple, intentionally triggered avalanches with thousands of deaths. Of course the Austro-Hungarians wanted to downplay the events from that day, because telling the truth and admitting what they did would definitely tank morale at home and on any other front they fought. Because soldiers were equipped to protect themselves from technically anything the enemy threw at them, but no one could protect themselves from tons and tons of snow and stone roaring down a mountain side.

One thing that stood out to me in the video is the BF109s. Some people I've seen think it's an error since not much fighting took place in the Alps in WW2.But they symbolize how time has passed for the Austro-Hungarian and Italian troops who's bodies are still in situ almost perfectly preserved. Many of the avalanches were deliberately triggered by artillery as a weapon of war in what really must have been one of the most brutal areas of the war. And of course, think how many of the elite troops were tied up there by the Italians, who would otherwise have been fighting on the western front. The whole country was involved in making winter gear to keep their soldiers in those conditions alive and fit to fight. It is a much-underappreciated part of WW1 among English speaking nations, so thank you to Sabaton for reminding us of it. And it is catchy as hell!

I definitely think this was a grower - I was initially a little underwhelmed, but by my third listen, it was one I was definitely planning to add to my regular playlist. Regarding the video, I really liked how they had the WW1 fighters and then the WW2 ones - helped emphasise the sad theme of the bodies remaining "frozen in time". Only way I think it would have been better is if they had had modern fighter jets for that last chorus/last shot (where you pointed out the key change), just to underscore that passage of time theme even more, but was still great. :)
