I really feel like anything that would truly blow my mind probably wouldn't feel like Metallica. They created such a sound that has been interated on and mixed, and so many iconic riffs that I don't think I can be wowed in the same way if I compare them to my newer favorite bands. I think they could do more but it just wouldn't feel like them if they modern the style and type of riffs they play.

Ok boomer 😉. Only joking, I don't have any hate for Metallica, they used to be one of my favourite bands, but to suggest this basic motorhead rip-off blues pentatonic hard rock tune with a horribly sloppy solo is better than a lot of modern metal is pretty ignorant. Hell even their contemporaries like Megadeth, Testament and Flotsam & Jetsam have released albums in recent years that are way more creative musically and lyrically, better played, better produced and easily capable of competing with the new generation of thrash metal bands.

Your comment on the solo is spot on. A French youtube guitar player (Florent Garcia) did a video on the solo with exactly the same comment : it's a "traditional" Hammett solo, that fit very well with the all "neo-traditional" direction the song clearly take. It's not the most technical (but still not "easy" and long enough for a 3 min song) and a bit dirty but...that's what Metallica solo are. This is THE Metallica sounds. You hear that solo outside of any context and people would go "Oh is that Metallica?"

For me, what kills the 'old school' vibe is the lyrics. Ever since the black album their lyrics just don't interest me anymore. It feels like it's all pop lyrics and fluff written for the sole purpose of having something to sing over metal riffs. The instrumentation is solid, and feels more Megadeth-y (which makes sense if it reminds you of Kill 'Em All) than I would have predicted, but the lyrics just seem so shallow.

When I first heard this tune the other night I was kinda torn, as far as my initial impression. Now a couple days have gone by and I have found myself repeatedly going back to listen to it, over and over. The chorus where James screams the song title is everything in this track. That and the kick drums. But just the way James climbs the ladder vocally to belt out the chorus is such an amazing hook. This almost feels like a sorta power metal almost-but-not-quite Dokken-type vibe meets British new wave meets sped-up Load riffage meets a more polished version of Hit the Lights. It's gonna be a go-to live song (the lyrics kinda reflect that) and the song's energy and the boys' own energy are undeniable. I can't explain it, but all I know is my ear loves it. I'm very happy Metallica is back with new tunes and I'm also very happy they kept the album under wraps so now it's arriving soon - to MY mind - rather than them announcing it 2 years out and then us playing the waiting game. These old dogs can still hunt.

The thing about the solo is that, like the riffs, it's all one huge callback to their first albums. When the solo starts you immediately remember that other solo that started this way and Kirk very cleverly visits all his most famous solos and aas a listener you're way too busy remembering how good you felt listening to *those* solo's, to notice that you are listening to a "greatest hits compilation" solo. 7:50 "I wonder if James used his icon white-V on purpose" Yes. The fact that most people don't notice and just go "yea, Mutallicuh!" is in part because of the iconic V-look of James. This entire song is crafted to sound like all the songs that made Metallica famous. It's not a new song written in the Metallica style, it's a song composed of all the hallmarks of the old Metallica style. This song is pure *marketing*. It's so much like all the other songs at once that people who remember those songs will re-listen those songs and people who don't know the songs will listen just because the entire internet is talking about how much this song sounds like the old ones. It's no different from what every movie today does; reference all the god movies people remember so they will think the current movie is good, and so they will re-watch the referenced movie. Remember, Metallica gets paid for every listen on everery platform so it literally pays to make people research their old songs. Am I going too deep here? No, sadly not.

As one of them was dating my neighbors older sister at the time. They pulled up in their pickup and gear to pick her up while on the way to play a gig at the Stone in SF. Growing up in the same area they made their homebase. We shared a lot of the same friends. Heck, I dated Willy Lange's (bass player of Laaz Rockit) ex girlfriend. As a guitar player myself. I spent a lot of time at Paradine Studios in San Lorenzo. Jammed with a band called Dethbred and PIgs. Anyway, I preordered the album as I always do.

I liked it. I really hope that we get more of this level of stuff than what we have gotten the last few albums. The only thing that I can say that is distinctly different than the early albums is that James' voice doesn't have near the same level of anger or us-vs-them. --- But that's not bad, just that it is noticeable. The speed on it is nice. This is early Metallica speed and that is what I liked when I first got into them. -------- With all of that being said, I'm going to wait to hear more. Maybe another song or two. With as mediocre as recent Metallica has been, one solid song is not worth buying a full album.

Yep, you're spot on. There's nothing revolutionary in there, and it can't stand up to stuff they wrote pre-1988. But nothing does, and fans need to stop expecting their newer material to stand up to their 80s material. Solid rock / classic metal songs are what they're gonna write, and that's okay. I particularly enjoy how their NWOBM influences, especially Motörhead, really stand out. Metallica sort of are the world's best-funded "dad rock" band these days, and they're wearing their influences on the sleeve. And I'm here for it.

This song gave me Motorhead vibes. Agreed about the solo, it fits the song. People have nothing better to do than complain.

Love Metallica and I'm glad I've seen them 6 times but I'm 52 and saw them mostly in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's. Before they're tickets became ridiculous! Most I've ever paid was $35 and you could be front row if you could get thru the pit.

I want to listen that in my car!!!! It is a good song and typical for Metallica. Not every song has to be the hardest ever seen.... a unique sound and different styles are important and exciting. Your reaction and comments on the song are great.

With its clear references to "Hit the Lights" and "Motorbreath," and the subject matter of the album's a harkening back to those days, i'm most impressed that they avoided sounding like a parody of themselves. Quite the tightrope walk. To go this direction right when it started to look as if they were turning into a legacy band is actually a rather bold, confident move.

Not totally blowing my skirt up but I'm definitely getting some Garage Inc. and older stuff vibes from it. It may grow on me...but I need to hear the rest of the album either way first.

THANK YOU for not just trashing Load and Reload like people tend to. They definitely have rough songs, and some songs are too long but there is incredible stuff on those albums. A completely different style of rock/metal from Metallica which I enjoyed a lot, and had some of James' most personal and emotional lyrics. Also some of their longest songs, Fixxxer, Bleeding Me, and The Outlaw Torn are all beautifully heavy songs.

It took me a few listens as to why the riff sounded familiar. "Hit the Lights" 2022? Hey, the formula worked then and it's much more polished from the production standpoint than "Kill 'Em All", so why not. It's not them ripping themselves off, and not a carbon copy, just very reminiscent of my high school years (yeah, I'm old).
