Only one year for the American market on 1976, filling in the gap between the 914 and the 924. 2099 were built, with just 500 sunroof cars, making the 912E one of the most collectible four-cylinder Porsche's . I have one of the sunroof cars, silver with black interior. They had 14 inch Fuchs wheels and different ratio 5sp box. Everything else was 922. They handle better than the 76 911 due to the lighter weight of the 4cylinder engine and lower cost to maintain the 2.0 4 cylinder engine.

Had one for 10 years. Great everyday Porsche and generally inexpensive to fix, with the exception of the one-off parts needed to mate the 914 2.0 to the 911 body and trans. The engines can be built up to serious horsepower if you have the bucks. Either way they are incredibly reliable and fun to drive - the back end is way lighter than a 911 so handling can be better - it made a good autocross car, though the front brakes are worthless - I replaced mine with vented Carrera rotors and calipers.

My Fiat 128SL has only 80hp or so and it is a total blast to drive! We have a 911SC and it is not a fast car compared to muscle cars or even the stuff we have today, but it is one of the most enjoyable cars I have ever driven. I used to wonder what all the love was about for 911s but when you have one, you understand why.

Number of cylinders is not the issue.... Porsche is bringing back a flat-four engine soon, this time sharing 991 engine components, and adding a turbo, for 350+HP...

It looks like Tanners car has CIS (Continous Injection System). It also has a WUR (warm up regulator) from a 911. These came with L-Jetronic fuel injection from the factory. I would be curious to know more about this conversion. I also own a 912E.

kooki85 What I heard was that he was afraid of ads getting pulled if he said something bad about a car(just make better cars) and the show than getting pulled due to lake of funding. Top Gear USA need to mature, who knows if it will get the time to do so, with TV audience being to split and internet creating less of a demand. As of right now though, it seems fake but not in a cleaver way and they redo what Top Gear UK did and the core audience of the show is people that watched UK. Give me a couple of holiday trip episodes, amphibious car episodes (Long Beach to Catalina) with not the same exact cars used in UK and pick a bad sports car and tear it a new one and we may have something.

knightn shinarmr Honestly, I think TG:UK has been going for so long that it'd be very hard for TG:US not to redo some of the things. I don't mind it at all because they're two very different shows. I actually prefer the US version.

kooki85 I prefer not having celebrities and I don't need the news. But first the banter is awful, roles aren't as clearly defined(not to mention it feels a lot like they act like what a UK citizen thinks how an american acts), the limo and rv episode were direct copies of the UK down to the cars they built(amphibious episode was better) and last no vacation episodes yet. The uniqueness, originality and host keep the UK version far ahead for now in my eyes. The question is how long will History keep Top Gear, and will it be long enough for it to grow into what Top Gear UK is?

I really hope the show gets a chance to grow. I really like the relationship between the hosts. No vacation episodes? Not sure what you mean by that. They visited Iceland last year, and have an ep filmed in Germany to air this year. Don't forget, the UK hosts do the show as their main job. For the US hosts, the show is just one of their jobs. (Tanner races in Rallycross, Adam has his other TV work and Rut travels to NASCAR events.)

I love carolla and think he would have been great on the show, he has a true passion for cars and has a great stage presence. also carolla leno and foust would have been a broader range of car guys but foust, wood and ferrara(he did annoy me in the beginning with "eh" but I'm past it now) are growing into their own on the show.

what coilovers on a '76 912E? if you're curios, read up on pre '89 911 suspensions, to just see how silly your statement is. Also there are tens of thousands of g-series 911, while just over 2,000 for 912E. Want a 6 banger, just buy one. Will be cheaper, than running all the different cooling lines.

he may be childish at times, but having a real profesional driver does makes sense for a car show. the uk version is entertaining, and fifth gear is for true petrolheads.

I watch both Fifth Gear and Top gear.. There's also the 'Drive' Channel on KZbin with Matt Farrah and Chris Harris.. Search their names on youtube, They are on great youtube channels for petrolheads as well. now, if THEY were with Tanner on TG US, then I think they'd have a show.. . But nothing will be as good as TopGear UK. Those 3 have the best on screen chemistry of any TV personalities.

Agreed. I'm a big fan of Matt Farrah. US top gear suck. All 3 hosts are terrible.
