You know some of that is just that real diversity was much greater back then, cultures were a lot more radically different than they are now, different dress, different mannerisms, different accents not only racially but class-wise and regionally, and consequently, having a film with more than one kind of person usually wrecked the aesthetic. It's actually because we have LESS diversity today that in some superficial ways we can appear to have more.
@greglaprade75076 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderfretheim5720 Great point. As an American Airlines stewardess in the early 50's, my mother would comment how each city had it's own unique restaurants, culture, and overall feel back then. Part of me is disappointed that I couldn't have lived in the era of White Christmas and other entertainment the likes of which they just don't make anymore, but the other part of me is glad that I live in the age of KZbin where I can listen to songs like this anytime I'm feeling down

I watched part of this with my Grandfather. i made a brief comment that i couldn't believe this was popular at the time, and that the actors acted like 12 year olds....he got a little pissed off. But, he hates Star Wars with a passion, and says the same thing about it.
@simplyblues19 жыл бұрын
Pete Zereeah At this time, 1954, American movies were strictly controlled by the Hays Code. Look up Joseph Breen who controlled the censorship of Hollywood at that time and you'll see why the actors seemed to act like 12 year olds. They weren't allowed to act like adults would have at the time as the movies wouldn't have passed the censor in a lot of cases, although manners were better than they are today. Nevertheless, I was a child of eight when White Christmas came out and Count Your Blessings is the song I remember best as I loved it so much. There's a lovely video on KZbin as well of Gordon MacRae singing this song live with his daughter Meredith that I like just as much as Bing Crosby's.
@epf19619 жыл бұрын
+Arkle Sparkle I beg to differ...It's TODAY's actors (or more accurately put, the characters they portray) that act and speak like 12 year olds, using foul language, sexual innuendos and gross/off-color humor. In earlier times the characters portrayed conducted themselves as adults ideally should: Respectfully, with intelligence, a good sense of humor, and above all, with CLASS. "Class" is a concept seemingly lost on society today, and we'd all do well to get back to some good old basics of conduct, civility and courtesy. We can truly learn something from these old films.

Solid advice. Count your blessings every night. I do that at least twice a week. I need to do it more. I'm severely disabled. And my SIL is in the hospital dying. Her daughter is confused about what is going on. So there are days when I says "why me and my family?" Then I think about those that don't have anyone to help them. Those on the streets without a roof and food. Ect. I am currently making hats and scarfs for the many homeless in my area. I'm calling it "Hats for the Homeless". If anyone crochets like me or maybe knits like my aunt or anything. Maybe you could do it too. They need our compassion. And during the winter they need what warmth we can give. Even going to the 99 cent store and putting together little bag of food and supplies. Women need pads and tampons. Etc.
