I think a lot of the comments on this video are forgetting the beauty behind practicing a martial art, learning and understanding all its movements and techniques steeped in tradition. It's not just a tool for self defense, but an art form in itself.

It’s a demonstration kids. A DEMONSTRATION. Of course no one is going to attack like this. Anyone who has trained in anything understands that sometimes when you practice you have to go S-L-O-W in order to get the technique. Then you progress. Then you add resistance and improvisation.

All the people complaining that it's not realistic that an attacker would hold still, of course not. However, I would suggest that the sensei is teaching how to handle a knife, not how to defend. It's all in the context of the instruction.

No knife attacker lunges forward with a single thrust. Most stabbing are where the knife is concealed, the attacker walks up and uses rapid stabbing movements. This fellow is depicting a totally unrealistic scenario.

Let me say something to you naysayers, one thing I and my students have learnt and that is to ignore people, when one claims, what attacker will and will not do, there is never one way of any attacks and furthermore this a teaching moment. I teach all scenarios and I have testimony from students that have applied the principles I teach in real time and life situations, including deadly attacks with knives and clubs. So go peddle your input somewhere else, it will be disregarded here!

The same William E. Fairbairn, who was a former anti-riot policeman in a red light district in Shanghai, who created his own combat system called Defendu, a system somewhat forgotten, but still used by the FBI , CIA, MI6, using techniques from different martial arts in the street, he compiled the ones that worked in several books, he even trained British, Canadian and American troops in the second world war, his system is known for its effectiveness, he said that a knife is the deadliest weapon to face, he created his system after he was cornered and stabbed among many, that made him study more martial arts, like boxing, kung fu, judo, etc.

Your indexing is smooth. Very fluid...I like it. In Arnis, we index with "snap"...and to change style or potential attacks. Indexing at contact distance (in my system) is a no-no, simply because I might drop my weapon since my opponent will be moving unpredictably, or attempting a disarm. When we have the protective gear on and things are moving fast, I wouldn't index unless there was a "lull" or some distance. That said--there is material here I have never seen. Very interesting.

He was the most amazing instructor I ever had... and it was just a weekend seminar that my school in Baltimore had come up for... in 1988/89.. was wondering if he had ever recorded any of his classes like this... but of course, like my own school.. it is now in the past. @@Kevin_drinks_Lead that's why he says you have to manipulate it. If you notice he's also attacking the arm as he angles himself. Apache's used the same tactics and were known as exceptional knife fighters using these tactics. Cutting and angling will allow your movement to be successful in this way. Otherwise our green berrets and SF brothers wouldn't have adopted them if it didn't work. If you're searching for more clarity i reccomend watching snake blocker. He trains soldiers and i believe he was also in the field, again same concept.

How many of you "commenters" have had ongoing edge weapons training in the USMC? Months of such? Probably none. Ever sewn Jerry Miculek shoot? Every thing this man does can be done with full speed. Whom of you have practiced this hours a day for a couple of years? Knife manipulation takes years to learn with ongoing practice. Maybe a year at 22 years old - 4 hours a day. Ever shot 500 rounds a day for years? Than you don"t know.

+crossbowuk Agreed, this is the problem with nearly all knife training. The aggressor always attacks in a very stereotypical fashion and the instructor always "allowed" to do whatever fancy dance they want while the aggressor just plays along. Completely unrealistic. For example the bad guy whos armed hand gets locked never uses there other hand to defend. Never tries to pull the weapon back which is an instinctual reaction when someone attempts to trap. Withdrawing a knife can severly damage anyone attempting to lock the weapon hand. I could go on but I would love to see how they defend against the very basic and effective prison yard rush where the attacker literally runs into you and stabs like a sewing machine with a solid hammer grip. Basic, neanderthaul, not fancy but hella effective. I am sure that these exercises could help with balance foot work and knife handling but I would hope no one seriously thinks this is really a practical technique. Besides, engaging in a knife fight is completely crazy and should never be done unless absolutely stuck there. Its a no win situation.
