I think a lot of the comments on this video are forgetting the beauty behind practicing a martial art, learning and understanding all its movements and techniques steeped in tradition. It's not just a tool for self defense, but an art form in itself.

It’s a demonstration kids. A DEMONSTRATION. Of course no one is going to attack like this. Anyone who has trained in anything understands that sometimes when you practice you have to go S-L-O-W in order to get the technique. Then you progress. Then you add resistance and improvisation.

Let me say something to you naysayers, one thing I and my students have learnt and that is to ignore people, when one claims, what attacker will and will not do, there is never one way of any attacks and furthermore this a teaching moment. I teach all scenarios and I have testimony from students that have applied the principles I teach in real time and life situations, including deadly attacks with knives and clubs. So go peddle your input somewhere else, it will be disregarded here!

The same William E. Your indexing is smooth. Very fluid...I like it. In Arnis, we index with "snap"...and to change style or potential attacks. Indexing at contact distance (in my system) is a no-no, simply because I might drop my weapon since my opponent will be moving unpredictably, or attempting a disarm. When we have the protective gear on and things are moving fast, I wouldn't index unless there was a "lull" or some distance. That said--there is material here I have never seen. Very interesting.

+crossbowuk Agreed, this is the problem with nearly all knife training. The aggressor always attacks in a very stereotypical fashion and the instructor always "allowed" to do whatever fancy dance they want while the aggressor just plays along. Completely unrealistic. For example the bad guy whos armed hand gets locked never uses there other hand to defend. Never tries to pull the weapon back which is an instinctual reaction when someone attempts to trap. Withdrawing a knife can severly damage anyone attempting to lock the weapon hand. I could go on but I would love to see how they defend against the very basic and effective prison yard rush where the attacker literally runs into you and stabs like a sewing machine with a solid hammer grip. Basic, neanderthaul, not fancy but hella effective. I am sure that these exercises could help with balance foot work and knife handling but I would hope no one seriously thinks this is really a practical technique. Besides, engaging in a knife fight is completely crazy and should never be done unless absolutely stuck there. Its a no win situation.
