Tanzania Electric Train Game Changer - The Africa They Conceal - Have you heard that Tanzania is making waves on the global stage by launching East Africa's first electrified railway, a dazzling new network that promises to reshape the region's transportation landscape? Powered by clean energy, this railway whisks passengers from the bustling port city of Dar es Salaam to the nation's capital, Dodoma, in less than four hours-a stark improvement over the gruelling eight-hour road journey. As a pioneering infrastructure project, Tanzania's electric railway is designed to bolster the nation's role as a regional trade powerhouse and to set a new standard for sustainable transport in East Africa, connecting the nation to neighbouring countries like Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. But how did this ambitious vision come to life? How was it financed? And what impact will it have on Tanzania and East Africa at large?
As we said earlier, Tanzania has just unveiled a groundbreaking feat of transportation: East Africa's first electric train system, which connects the bustling port city of Dar es Salaam to the capital, Dodoma, in under four hours. With high-speed electric trains replacing the long, often arduous road journey, the new railway offers passengers not just a faster route, but an experience that rivals global standards. The vision for Tanzania's Standard Gauge Railway or S.G.R project, took shape in 2017 with a commitment to modernizing the country's aging railway infrastructure. With each phase, Tanzania laid the groundwork for a transport network that would not only boost economic mobility within the country but also strengthen its ties with neighbouring nations. This massive undertaking is part of President Samia Suluhu Hassan's ambitious plan to bolster Tanzania's role in regional trade. The vision was clear: build a high-speed, high-capacity railway that could one day become the backbone of East African logistics and trade. Construction kicked off in April 2017, with the first phase - a line from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro - completed in 2022. By June 14, 2024, this phase was fully operational, sparking admiration across Africa and beyond as President Hassan herself inaugurated Tanzania's leap into the future of rail travel.

Point of correction. This Electric Train was initiated by the late President; President Magufuli. Any one making video about the Tanzania SGR should remember to give credit to this brave man who loved our Country like no other Leader ever did. Mungu ibariki Tanzania, Mungu ibariki Africa.

While magufuli played a key role in making the plan come true but the plan was laid down long before magufuli became president. This plan was laid down during kikwete leadership particularly during the emergency of coalition of the willing in the EAC northern corridor.

If this plan was laid down by Kikwete then why couldn’t he start it in action. I guess Kikwete couldn’t do it because he was lazy inept and corrupt.!!

It was an EAC plan with backing from AU. How individual countries have advanced it is what varies. I know lots of people like to dump on the EAC and it's effectiveness, but some really great moves have come from it and it can only get stronger.

It all began with the visionary foundation laid by our founding father, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. Subsequent presidents, including Mwinyi, Mkapa, and Kikwete, continued with various plans and feasibility studies. Then came the brave President Magufuli, who dared to initiate the projects. Finally, President "mama" Samia took on the projects in their early stages and bore the burden of carrying them to maturity.
