gotta say Clever solution with the Mic-stabillizer. I have a Sony PD150p and the external Mic holder recently came off since it was just some weird rubber. Somehow the Microhone section of these professional Sony Camcorders were always kinda weird. Especially when i compare it with Pansconic's cameras like the DVX-100 series which had solved it much better.

Adding to the info: I recently picked up an FS-5 and it was a certified fancy looking paperweight. Mine would not allow me to record clips longer than 30 seconds before the unit would freeze up and require me to pull the battery out. It would also freeze when attempting to transfer logged clips to the computer. I’ve heard of people swapping the internal HDD for an SSD but I haven’t gone down that route yet. In the meantime I picked up a Sony HVR-MRC1 which records onto compact flash and works like a charm.-also keeps your clips organized on the card. My reason for going tapeless was because my vx1000 had a tape stuck inside and the camera would not detect it for an eject.. I ended up removing the tape deck altogether from my vx1000 to get rid of the cameras 5 minute auto shut-off and now my rig is a lot lighter as well! Hope this helps someone in the future

I was advised on a video forum that instead of using the outdated and expensive SONY HVR-MRC1, I could opt for a more cost-effective solution. The suggestion is to use an S-Video to HDMI converter along with devices like an Atomos Ninja or BMD Video Assist to record the incoming video stream. I am curious if anyone has experience with this setup or has any input on its effectiveness. Thank you.

I’ve been using a monitor that records the footage and it also gives you a screen (not that it’s totally needed), but I like it much better. I was using my Atimos but I found a much cheaper and much smaller one from a company called SuiKui. It’s the RH35 I believe. It’s like $100 new and it records directly to sd. Make sure that you put the settings in the monitor to 4:3 ratio vs 16x9 otherwise you’ll have to unsqueeze the footage. That all said I like this option so much more. The monitor mounts to the cold shoe, no Velcro or anything of that needed plus i can use it on my Vx2000, or TR900. I would check it out.

There's a much cheaper & probably easier way to do this, though not with raw capture - not that it should be much of an issue with this usage. Some phones have USB OTG - add a small and very cheap 'UVC'(as this means it'll be compatible with android) USB capture device, and you can now record(&/or view) footage onto your phone.

So I have a question. It’s been a few years since I’ve been like deep in keeping up with the skateboard filming world. Why do filmers still use things like the VX instead of moving towards better equipment. Cause when I think about like say with movies the fight between film and digital, film is better resolution wise and has a unique look but digital is still very good. So the difference isn’t that bad. But modern digital cameras that can be set up to shoot skateboarding vs cameras that shoot mini dv is like a huge gap in quality. So why?
@whiskerbiscuit6674
@whiskerbiscuit6674 3 жыл бұрын
Because hipster that's why. Once upon a time it was high tech. And the dudes who got paid to do it didn't upgrade. Everyone wants the feel of the vintage videos like those on THPS. They claim the audio is good and the fish eye is good. But it's all about hipster aesthetic. Just like when instagram came out and everyone used the sepia filters to make it look "old." It's a fad that hopefully dies soon. These videos are going to drive up the price on the used market like the guy was already explaining and people will get tired of it and move on. It's all about it looking like the VHS they grew up on. Soon nobody skating will know what a VHS is and not understand why the quality is so crap.
@MattSezer
@MattSezer 3 жыл бұрын
It's nostalgia. Also, I personally feel that 4:3 is a better aspect ratio for skateboarding. However, you can still shoot 4:3 on more modern cameras.
@whiskerbiscuit6674
@whiskerbiscuit6674 3 жыл бұрын
@@MattSezer Skateboarding is a left to right sport 90 percent of the time. Widescreen makes way more sense than 4:3. And it is an incredibly dumb rational to shoot at 4:3 when you can shoot wide and crop the footage with a 4:3 gate. That way you still at least have the original footage so when everyone realizes how stupid this fad is you can release a normal HD video with the original footage.
@MattSezer
@MattSezer 3 жыл бұрын
@@whiskerbiscuit6674 Lenses are circles, and circles are closer in shape to 4:3 than 16:9, so in effect, you're basically just cutting off the top and bottom of the image from the lens if you're shooting in 16:9. As a result, you need to get much further away from the obstacle to film the trick if you'd want the same framing, which makes it seem less dramatic. Doing as you suggested would defeat the purpose of shooting in 4:3 entirely because you'd be cropping off the top and bottom of the image from the lens to get to widescreen and then cutting off the sides. A better option to give you the option of both would be to shoot 4:3 at a resolution higher than HD and then cut off the top and bottom of the image in post. This would really be no different than shooting 16:9 HD in the first place. Anamorphic lenses would an interesting option, but decent ones would be well beyond the budget of most skaters.
@whiskerbiscuit6674
@whiskerbiscuit6674 3 жыл бұрын
@@MattSezer Yeah that's not how it works sorry man. if you shoot 16:9 There is no cropping and you don't need to be further away. You'll only need to crop if you want your 16:9 footage to be 4:3. Like they did with pan and scan for old movies "formatted for your tv." And the whole point of using lenses is to make things either closer or further. So using the proper lens you wouldn't need to be any closer or further from the camera. Skate vids have been shooting wide for decades now. The vx thing is just a fad now. It was "top of the line" for cheap skaters who needed a durable cam. But it's extremely outdated and low quality compared to all the other options you have today.

@Skater XL Legend, when using tapes you have to import the tape to the computer. There are no separate files on the tape like there are on SD cards. Us filters will put our hands in front of the camera after a trick is landed so when we're quickly skimming through the footage on a computer we see our hand and know where the landed trick is. Otherwise we'd have to sit there and watch through all the bailed tricks (or heavy slams, funny clips, etc.) in order to find the stuff to use in the edit. Basically, we do that to mark a clip so we can save time importing footage to our computers.

I think this regression to vx1000 is kinda lame to be honest. I get that “vintage” is cool but when we were shooting with vx1000 it’s because it was honestly kind of a revolutionary camera. Same with the XL1. You can always filter footage to get that gritty 2000’s quality but you can’t knock it back up if you film on old technology. Kinda a lame tiktok/hipster thing. You do you, but i hope this trend dies soon. I’ve seen enough vx1000 footage to last a lifetime, I don’t really wanna see anymore.
