I started out hand taping....then banjo and finally Tube, boxes etc. 45+ years in the trade. I love the machine tools but I have seen a hand taper complete a 120 sheet house, 8 ft lids with wrapped closets and windows with a machine tool guy in an identical house. It was on a wager and both had no helper. I was the guy running the project so I made sure everything was even. Now some here will think it is BS but the hand taper won. I think the reason is travel time if you know what I mean. The hand taper has less trips from room to room. The machine tool taper bought us lunch as I had my bet on the hand taper. On the other hand the machine tools make life easier...less stilt time for one thing!

The guy running the taping tools had to be slow. No way a hand taper is faster. Period.

@@northwesternlocalist7038 I know theres no way anytime a banjo guy would say that to me I would laugh. I took several bets never lost the biggest advantage for a bazooka guy is he can tape floor level and lids at the same time .long handle wipedown knife for lids the only thing that would slightly slow me down is picking corners, but not very much half house angles at a time roll glaze run through on stilts pick em quick all bottoms wiped lids are wiped just angles up top left. I will take two fast clean wipedown guys behind me against any banjo guy with the same helpers. I can reach 9 and 10ft from the floor banjo guy cant.

I believe it I had 1 guy start around 7:30 with a super taper finish 2 houses about 120 sheets each with a vault and put bead on and was done by 5 Ridiculous fast once you know what you’re doing also less expensive less maintenance and less cleaning

Nice to see a professional who knows how to run these tools correctly. I was running a bazooka and all the taping and finishing tools when I was 16 years old with my dad. I used to be able to keep two or three guys hustling trying to keep up with the wiping down as I made it a challenge to run it as fast as possible. As to the comment above about a hand taper being as fast as a tool taper, I’d put $100 up that says I could still out do any ham taper, and I haven’t run these tools in 20 years. I do everything with a banjo or by hand as I mostly specialize in very small projects and repairs and I’m quite fast by hand but I was much faster with tools if you know how to run them correctly. Honestly I suck with a banjo, but as far as coating the joints and such, that’s where I’m fastest. I’ve done mostly small repairs for 15 years and have fine-tuned that to an art. I can walk in and fix four or five fist sized holes in multiple rooms and have everything textured and cleaned up in about three hours. And now I’m moving towards teaching this art full-time on my KZbin channel. Thanks and keep up the good work. Actually, maybe we should do a collaboration video sometime.

You are a master. I just bought my guys all Level Five skimmer blades. 16,18,24,32 and poles too. We just switched to Plus 3 light weight mud. We have been using green top for years. Great job Semper Fi

Here's a suggestion for wiping tape....especially the short spans or as some call legs or header joints...put a little mud in one spot over the tape before you wipe it..it will prevent the tape from moving and it wipes easier along with increasing speed. Even on the wall or lid flats of some length I always used that trick to make it easier. Just something to add to this video which is pretty instructional.

Remember the bucket, take handle of and bend it to hold tape, pass tape threw two slots at bottom of bucket fill with soup.. it's messy but fast for free

Something to consider... Canadian dollars. Banjo 200. Bazooka and pump 2000. Big difference in cost. Is the performance as big a difference?

I just bought the carbon fiber bazooka the other day it ran me $1,650 + tax the pump is about 400, the gooseneck is about 80.

I just finished rebuilding my 2nd Columbia bazooka. Taped out a 14000 ft house in 6hours flat with 2 other guys. I'd quit taping if I couldn't use a bazooka.

Never saw one like that but for u a definite necessity. What’s your opinion on the durabond hard mud for setting the tape. As green diy er I can tape n have a bedroom primed in one day pretty easily. It’s definitely the 30-45 minute set time n not waiting to dry plus the humidity.

Drywall Doctor, your having blister issues due to mixing your material with little water and running the gun with stiff mud! Add a bit more water.

Thicker! I don't mean mixing all porpuse like water just a bit more than you used last time, I have never had dripping mud from the gun! Please believe me when I write about having everything clean especially the mixing station has to be clean so no one slipes accidentally ! I am not bragging but when it's time to finish for the day my cloths doesn't have not even a drop of mud! When I am filling corner beads, not a drop! Plus I am moving fast all day! It's not that I am arrogant but, this is how I learned to be by older men to be clean & lightning speed!

When I had a chance to work on houses were ceilings were 8ft & everything square it would be a good year! Plus I learned this trade at a early age! Plus I play racquetball 3 times a week. This is a big factor!!

Why don’t rockers hang drywall vertically and avoid butt joints? Then you’d have 100% factory joints.

Walls are stronger when drywall goes perpendicular to the studs on structual wood otherwise they do stand-up metal stud work but those are just partition walls dividing one room from another room

Not to mention it's 3 times as much finishing when you have a joint from floor to ceiling every 4 feet....stand ups suck...sometimes they are crowned and you have to float them like butt joints any how...you can literally run around a room when you have one flat at 48" or 54"

I've been using our bazooka on a few jobs now. I understand box mud has different levels of water in it but do you have a general rule of thumb for the amount of water for your bazooka, mud boxes etc?

No set amount just because the mud itself can be so different. I go by the way it bubbles when I stop mixing it. Bubbles pop out of the mud and I just know. I'll try to get it on video.

I have a tool for almost every trade (in residential I do, lol)......I really want a set of drywall automatic tools....l know how to run all my tools well and think I could run a bazooka, glazer ,roller and a box..........pretty much the only thing I haven't done in residential construction

Kris B if you buy a tapetech bazooka it'll originally come with a two year manufacturer warranty. But if you go on tapetech.com and register it that two year becomes a five year warranty. I just went out and bought the tapetech carbon fiber bazooka, supposed to be lighter and more durable the the original tapetech bazooka. Well worth the money if you use it a lot and the warranty covers all the parts.
