If you don't want to make, you can find these at any Vietnamese bakery. Some of the grocery stores sell them too.

Hello Tom, I had a lot of this as a child too and loved the color and texture. I usually have frozen mashed mung bean onhand and it makes the preparation faster. Happy Cooking!

Hi. We don't have pandan leaves here. Can i replace it with matcha powder just to achieve similar green color(not going after similar taste)? Thanx in advance.
@RunAwayRice5 жыл бұрын
Yes, matcha powder would be a close match to the color. You can also use spinach or kale juice with a bit of green food coloring to perk up the color. Good Luck!

Hello, thank you for sharing this recipe. It worked the first time I made it but the next few times I made it, my dough would not thicken. I would continue to stir after everything was dissolved but it would never get the thick feeling at all. What would you recommend I do differently? I have followed your ingredients and step by step process. I just keep getting stuck at the heating the dough process. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Hi friend, that's really unusual you were successful the first time but not after that. Tapioca starch typically thickens up really quickly when heated. I would suggest increasing the heat from Low to Medium and see if that helps. Perhaps you may want to try a different brand of tapioca starch as well. Good Luck and let me know how you make out.
@icecreambubble10 жыл бұрын
RunAwayRice Thank you for your response. I thought it was unusual too that it worked the first time exactly like your video and then the next few times I couldn't get it to thicken at all. I will try turning up the heat and trying a different brand of tapioca starch.

Looks good! What is panden paste though?
@RunAwayRice9 жыл бұрын
Hi Bẹnamin, it's a paste made from the leaves of the pandan plant and is a popular flavoring used in Asian desserts and drinks. You can find pandan paste at most Asian grocery stores and online.

Tang, where do you get your mung beans (green gram) from. We are located in High Point, NC and are having a hard time finding them. We would appreciate your help and/or suggestions. Thank you.
@RunAwayRice11 жыл бұрын
Hi Garrett, look for the mung beans at your local Asian grocery store as they're staple ingredients. Bob's Red Mill is a brand that available at health food stores. If all else fails, purchase online from Amazon. Good Luck!

@RunAwayRice8 жыл бұрын
+Martini Ricki Hi if you can't find the pandan paste you can purée fresh pandan leaves and then strain to get the juice. Pandan essence works well too.

Yes em, they are the same. The Asian grocery stores label it as "tapioca starch" and the American/Western stores as "tapioca flour".

are the banana leaves and silicone cups necessary?
@RunAwayRice9 жыл бұрын
+Erin Ko Hi Erin, in this recipe, yes, the banana leaves add a really nice aroma and the silicone cups are used to hold the cakes for steaming. Hope that helps.
@sundayspeonies50827 жыл бұрын
Is cooking the batter necessary? Can't you steam it raw?
@RunAwayRice7 жыл бұрын
The batter separates so it is necessary to cook it first.
