The key to vertical flexion is lateral flexion. I would spend time on the ground working on lateral flexion getting her really light. Then mount up and repeat the process then move on to vertical

Mom this is a lot of work! I really don’t like that word wait! Can’t we go faster? Tara she is trying but I don’t think she understands why you want her to lower her head! Yet she does it on the trail! Maybe she is always on the watch in the inside arena? Just a thought! A lot of work and patience! I never realized there was so much involved to back a horse! P.S. After watching all of your patient, consistent training with Bella, over these 5 and a half year's, Tara. It has made me fully appreciate and respect, the many people whom back and train horse's everyday. Especially for people like myself, whom owned my own horse for 21 year's. But my horse came already backed, but slightly green. I bought him, as a 4 to 5 yo. Australian Stock Horse gelding.
