Thanks to you Tara, I’m aiming to submit my thesis at the 3 year point in March next year. Have published 6 articles and signed a book contract for monograph based on my thesis, with the manuscript to be submitted in August. Would never have thought it possible until I started watching your videos in 2020.

So happy to see that you're still making vlogs even after departing Flinders. I (re)discovered this channel during my research for a presentation I'm delivering to a group of MA students on "From Revolution to Revelation" (2005). Looking forward to introducing them to your brilliant work! Also, you can add 1 extra citation to your mental tally for "Panic Learning" because I cited it in my MA thesis (hard copy only). With love from the northern hemisphere!

This was si helpful with my phd productivity, because I in a field where you can actually be productive. With this method I have 20ish papers only from my phd research, the first wos acceptance, and around 20 articles from other areas, one editited volume (of students work) and a couple of smaller inputs, togehter with digital dissemination. This and whiteboard sessions are so helpful.

Thank you very much for this Tara. As a first year PhD student, I was feeling at loss in figuring out my chapters and how to configure them for publication (currently finishing up my first article). Your "punchy" advice definitely helps me to feel less lost :)) -Saqifah from Japan

Oh my goodness. Where do I start with the pep talk of all pep talks?! Thesis looking a little drab? SOS it up! Add a sprinkle of SOTL! You gotta make something from nothing! Never in my life have I been so excited for someone receiving a whiteboard. I'm in! Even if our 21 hour time difference means I have to get up in the middle of the night, with 3 babies, I'll be there with bells on. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - it's so nice to meet another human who talks about 'calculated ambition' in a way that makes it seem easy, like you just want to get up and GO! I do have a number of questions, and shall save them. "I'm dreaming of a white.....board......CHRISTMAS! la la la la". Hee hee. On a serious note, thank you for the extremely helpful information. I have taken extensive notes, and already have a number of ideas now for chapters in my dissertation. I've been holding this paradox, with messages of "this is a dying industry. Only 1% of publications are even read. It's a cacaphony of ideas" vs "ideas are still worth saying, peer-review matters, and you can use this to disseminate to your community, so it is STILL IMPORTANT." I don't really have a solution, but I'm learning to hold the uncertainty and look at it, analyzing its many contexts, and my own reactions. So we'll see where this goes! Lots of love to you.

Where was Barney, Tara?!! My brother is set to enrol in a PhD by publication at the University of Adelaide. I have been trying to convince him of doing a traditional type, but his supervisor is keen (of course) for one by publication. I will have to forward him this Post and see if he can see the error in their chosen model. Until next time, cheers, Doug.

Hi Richard. Mate - such an important point. Luckily, I did a couple of education degrees and a grad dip internet studies after my history and cultural studies training. But SoTL is so damn important. The only way to stop all the 'this is how I was taught at university' is through concrete and clear SoTL research. SoS is the same. We have these amazing fields - let's contribute to them. Improve higher education. You are THE BEST. Thanks for being you. txxx

Extremely useful!! Wahou! If I knew this before, I am just struggling with an article now though I was hesitating about doing it (alone), I will finish without all the elements that should be saved for the thesis itself. I was feeling that I was doing the right thing... this came right on the spot. Thanks Fairy. I may be PhD ready now, though I have like one more year of writing... ;D) that's ok, there is a lot to write about!

Great episode as always! I would enjoy an episode on how to protect your joy of doing science given that you need to keep pedaling so hard. I guess staying on such a survival mode for years and years can easily kill passion, even when successful.

Thank you so much for this post. I am just about to start my PhD journey and have the same supervisor as my professor in the last couple of taught courses in my Masters. I was wondering that my one of my assignments and Master thesis might be publishable. My question is: am I allowed to go it alone without my supervisor if they are busy or just delaying because of no fault of their own. Can I go forward without they blessing?

Thank you Prof. Tara for another amazing video! Two questions - 1. What do you think about submitting conference papers during the PhD? Is it safe to publish in conference proceedings since most journals reject "pre published papers?" 2) If I'm doing a Phd monograph instead of by publications, can I publish from the PhD before graduation? If so, how do I include pre published articles in the monograph without plagiarism and without doing extra work rewriting the sections from which the articles are taken?
@Heyu7her32 жыл бұрын
If you don't publish anything related to your dissertation, then it's not a problem. Most try to hold off until after they've defended, but I think each university has their own policies around "self-plagiarizing". You might want to check out your school's policies to see if there's another way.

Hi IA - in some disciplines like Engineering - conference papers are the foundation of research. Great stuff. As to the relationship between publishing before submission and this bizarre - invented - phrase 'self plagiarism' - there is one strong solution. Self citation. 'Self plagiarism' is solved by 'self citation.' Absolutely - some journals and submission protocols have issues with the relationship between publications and PhD examination. But as long as you cite - self cite - your movement of ideas between the iterations of your research - you are cool. I am so sorry we are in this situation. I'm currently recording an audiobook on information literacy with a chapter on 'self plagiarism' - so I know it seems bonkers. But protect yourself. The best 'medication' to the development of your ideas is self citation. Hang in there - you've got this! txxx

Good on you, superstar. Self citation - or 'self citation' - manages all these issues. Publish ideas and log the movement and development of your ideas. Biggest wave to you! txxx

Any advice for those without positive Supervisory support - who else might we look to for spotting papers in chapters? TIA x
@TaraBrabazonChannel Жыл бұрын
Hi UDM. Superstar - look for sections that have integrity in and of themselves. So if you've got a chapter with a big bit of meaty content - cut that part out first - write a new intro and outro - that will get you started. Then look at what is left from the chapter - and render that a new piece. The key is - cut out a key idea. Make that key idea the centre of the article. See how you go - and get back in touch if we can help! txxx
