Does this need to be hooked up to a PC at all for normal RC plane flying? I am just looking for a good transmitter that will not need replacing as I get more into this hobby. Coming from a Spektrum DX6 and am a bit intimidated by the ease of use of FrSky's radios. I no longer own the DX6 and am looking for a good radio. Please help, thanks.

A touch screen would have be really nice a well back lit one.. I am getting nice and friendly with my Jumper 16 but driving my Taranis XD9 plus is pretty comfy to me mostly thanks to you're amazing tutorial videos on how to program and tune it to perfection.. Thumbs up.

Good review thanks. R9m is getting better and with the access firmware you get benifits like wireless binding etc so will be as good as or better than xfire soon enough which will make this radio a good one. Or for racing you don't now need xfire as the access latency is so good at 7ms.

If you run crossfire the new one is definitely the way to go. The 2019 SE has two S.Port busses internally. One is dedicated to the jr bay which means no more erroneous “telemetry lost telemetry found” call outs.

This great news for anyone on a budget and wants to get a Taranis ,as the price should come down on the standard X9d as others who just upgrade for the sake of it .The thing is ,most of us who buy the Taranis MOD the crap out of it and spend at least another £100+ M9 gimbals ,lipo/battery mod ,back stand ,back lights ,stick ends ,grips ,cover ,switch grip sleeves ,speaker ,external modules.... The list just goes on and on.I agree it's what you can do with the Taranis ,thanks to OpenTx that makes the radio a winner. I just don't understand the negative comments on the R9M ,may be I'm just lucky ,but I have never had a fail safe using mine (Jinx I will now!) Apart from the odd twicthes when not on fixed out put ,for the price it's perfect. I only fly 5" inch quads , But I can confidently ,fly in a field 800 x 800m + ,proximity ,behind trees ,through hedges and over 1 mile out (battery permitting). and not have a single fail safe ( I do have gps rescue ,but never used in anger!). FrSky does seem to be making some odd decisions as of late ,maybe it's just going through a mid life crisis?

Hello. Do i need to go thru this process if i have the older taranis plus? Im thinking of getting the crossfire tx lite to go with the controller. I thought it was just plug n play. Havent been flying for awhile, guess im missing something here. Seems like there are steps i have to take in order to use the crossfire with the controller. Im currently using the ezuhf. Didnt have yo do all these steps back then.

I’ve just replaced my ageing Taranis plus with the 2029 SE model, this has the upgraded switched plus the hall sensor gimbals (I had replaced those in my old Taranis with the hall sensor ones, so this one is the same). I wasn’t too concerned about the lack of battery as a 2s lipo is only £15 and as for SD cards, I have plenty spare ones! I agree that having a nightly release version of OpenTx on a new radio does seem strange as you get the warning not to fly with it, but having flown about 20 sessions with my Auri DLG I haven’t yet found an issue, plus this version of OpenTx supports Crossfire, not that I use it but thought that I’d put the record straight. For me the new momentary button on the top left is a great asset, especially for launch mode when flying DLGs and I much prefer the roll switch which replaces the 3 right hand side menu buttons.

After having bought more than 30 Taranis tx's to ship with our UAV's, I'm still surprised FrSky has not put a 6 button flight mode switch like Jumper did. We've been having to mod all of them with a scabbed on 6 button digital switch. Though this works well, it's extra work and still looks like an after thought.

I bought my X9D (non-plus) back in early 2014 for two reasons, the price and the fact that the software running it was OpenSource. I do believe it’s the OpenSource aspect of this radio that made it so popular, having a collective community behind its evolution rather than a singleminded manufacturer much like Spektrum. I feel if FrSky start to close the door on the very talented OS community they may find their user base shrink as they transition to other options such as the Jumper radios and the JumperTX builds. What version of software are you running on your X9D+ Painless 360? I installed 2.2.2 on mine from FrSky and it all worked fine except the sim jack. If I attempt to turn that to slave/jack to use the simulator the software exits back to the current model.

Personally I don't mind not having an SD card included. My first Taranis came with a flaky card, causing quite a bit of troubleshooting until I replaced it with one of my own. So, I'm happy to reuse one of my old good-quality / low capacity cards if it saves a couple of bucks and eliminates dealing with a dodgy cheap card.

It depends on the local RF noise, antenna alignment and a host of other factors. Over 1.5km should be possible easily. Check local laws as flying beyond line of sight (BLOS) is usually not allowed..

Hi Mate, could you do a tutorial on how to to do 2 things to a Taranis x9plus etc? 1st. How to physically swap over switches SH and SF so the momentary switch is on the left. This is particularly needed for right handed DLG launches. AND 2) solder on a new push button momentary switch and install it on the left side of the TX box. Cheers Tim

No battery and no sd card 🤔 . I know a lot of people would upgrade the battery but I think it should come with a battery just to get you started. And like you said it also should come with an sd card. I feel frsky have just lost there way just recently . You would think they would look at the mods people do to their taranis and incorporate the best bits to make an awesome radio .

Hi, thanks for a great video. I have just bought a X9D SE 2019 edition. I'm trying to bind with an FRSKY X6R Reciever, without success. I have tried to bind when the model is in ACCESS mode and ACCST D16 but cant get it to bind. What am I doing wrong? Great if you can point me in the right direction...

OpenTX is incredibly powerful and can do pretty much anything (I know I've tried) but it's not for everyone. It can appear too complex for many pilots. I've been asking for OpenTX to create am OpenTX lite interface that would appeal to those pilots who are more used to less programmable radios like Futaba and Spektrum but no news yet..

This version of OpenTX is a snapshot from some point in the development of OpenTX 2.3, and they remove the stuff they don't want. If you install the OpenTX from the actual OpenTX site, those features should return.

@@serang Actually i got reports of better range with the T16 module, because the T16 radio do not have module by default, so the multi frequency module that comes with it is fantastic, and I use in my fullside crossfire module and is flawless with all the telemetry available. The 16 is fantastic, and Taranis radios too.

I really like your series of video which is extremely informative. I am getting into RC flying and my personal preference is biased towards Planes and Gliders. Where I am living, I have two options of FrSky transmitter: 1) FrSky Taranis X9D Plus 2019 2) FrSky Taranis Q X7 Access 2019 Please, suggest which one I should go for.

Both radios are solid choices. Beware of asking this as all pilots have a personal preference borne out of their own experiences and bias. See my kit picks 2021 video where I cover my own choices for radios, neither of those are on the list.. Best of luck with it. Either of those, or something like the RadioMaster stuff, will be fine for what you want. I'd look for more switches than you think you need (X9D) as you'll find all kinds of things you want to use them for as you get more into the hobby..

USB 3.1 would be more costly and problematic to implement I heard, that's why they still use mini-USB. Micro-USB is more sensitive to physical damage, so in that perspective I don't mind that they still use it. The version of OpenTX FrSky puts on the radio is always a limited version, if you reflash it with the version from open-tx.org it will have what you like (except D8 protocol on the internal transmitter module as it's not supported).

Without D8 I couldn’t fly my entire fleet. All but 1 has built in spi rx & it just works better on D8 not as many dropouts & failsafe. The power button & scroll wheel do nothing for me. I’m like others I don’t care for the direction is headed. If I was looking for a new radio I think I’d be looking a Jumper, they appear to be much more like the Frsky of old.

I still have my old flysky 9x radios. Today I was watching a video on their new flysky radio with a touch screen. It looks pretty nice and simple to use. It should be nice once they get all the kinks sorted from the little bit I saw. I've never touched a taranis and this new version just makes it more confusing.

As opposed to the crappy buttons that snap regularly on the X9D? I have both Spektrum and X9D - the wheel is infinitely better than the clicky snappy fragile buttons on the X9D. Unfortunately - the wheel seems to be the only improvement they made :-(

Piotr Markiewicz glad to hear it :-). I’ve had to replace ,fix, the 3 buttons on either side of the screen. Very brittle plastic. Mine is one of the first X9Ds too. Not a big job really , it still can’t be beaten for the money so I can forgive the cheaper plastics etc.

Lots of 'upgrades' coming for the radios to allow them to run the Access protocol. Too many upgrades for existing radios require you to swap hardware inside the radio with others not getting support at all.. Disappointing.

Frsky are defo losing the plot a bit imho, I loved the original x9d and spent hours writing Kia scripts to make it do stuff that nothing else out there could even dream of doing but I've lost interest in frsky apart from the solid link that d8 and d16 gives me , I've got too many d8 rxs to lose them and many of them are built into quads FC so can't even flash them with mike's upcoming firmware for them. I have my X-lite and my x9d already which work great anyway.

That's exactly the reason I didn't make any more Nirvana videos. I didn't feel like the release of the product (and its Impact on customers) was being handled professionally..

So, once again FRSky launch a product before it's ready and expect the market to do their beta testing. It was literally months after launch before the S6R worked properly. And no SD card or battery on a £150 plus radio? Pathetic. FRSky have really lost their way, no wonder companies like Jumper are taking their market share.
