This was super helpful to see for me today. I just got my first tarantula and I've been so terrified of making mistakes, and feeling stupid for asking simple questions to groups online, and I've gotten a handful of condescending responses that have made me feel really down today. But this just goes to show that everyone makes mistakes sometimes, no matter how long we've been in the hobby, but in the end the most important thing for us to keep in mind is that the safety of our spiders matters most. Thank you Kat! You've really cheered me up today

We all think we are being careful and it's things like this that show that as careful as you try to be, there is always that chance. Really proud of you for posting this. We’ve all seen your haters and we all know their nasty attitudes. Honestly though it’s true, everyone does make mistakes. Especially when keeping 100+ Tarantulas, you may hurt one on accident someday. But the reality is that all of these animals will probably live longer and fuller lives than they would have in the wild. Wild tarantulas have to face far worse natural disasters, terrifying predators, illnesses, food shortages, bad sheds, etc. and if gd forbid the worst you do is drop a piece of cork on a guy who’s kicking hairs at you I’d say you’re doing a good job. You got this Kat!

Remember when Petko did a rehouse and squashed his little T on accident? I felt so bad for him. That's exactly what I thought when I seen this thumbnail. Thank goodness everyone is OK. No worries, just learned a little lesson is all lol. Still smarter than what I do with my T's. I use my hands for everything (except picking them up and feeding them). I want to recommend you a method to rehouse such a hair kicking tarantula. Instead of having to move it use the water sprayer and use it over the T, I used it once in my Auratum and they dont flick hairs in that way, because they detect that water as rain and they will just move to the other side, its pretty effective
@davidcamacho3992
@davidcamacho3992 2 жыл бұрын
@whatacuteTae yes, an autatum can be pretty skitish during the rehouse. Moving them can cause them to kick hairs and get nervous, so what I do is gently splaying water behind it. Tarantulas have an instinct to avoid water and rain, so instead of flicking hairs they just move to find cover somewhere else

Could not understand why anyone would want one. About a month ago I just stumbled on a video from Exotics Lair and before I knew it was watching his and looking for others and found yours. I had no idea about the colors and patterns on the various Tarantulas or how easy they are to keep. So interesting to observe their habits and behaviors. Now I hear myself saying all the time....WOW...What a beautiful F*&K%$G spider. It is hard to believe but I actually would like to have one. Unfortunately wifey says NO. Lol. I've had 2 mishaps with my Hapalopus sp columbia (large) pumpkin patch sling. First one was when I was attempting to feed it in it's 50 dram vial. I looked down to talk to my cat (yes, I talk to her) and accidentally smacked the enclosure with my tongs. The enclosure flew off the shelf 4 feet down to the floor. I expected to see a sling with an exploded abdomen. But I had to dump the substrate out before I found it, and it was walking around like nothing happened. The 2nd time was when I was holding up it's current enclosure, a small temporary betta tank. I was holding it by the handle on the top when the lid popped off. Again I freaked out, but after a few minutes I saw the tarantula walking around on the floor. I then put it in a temporary container while rearranged it's enclosure.

I have been there with you girl! What had happened for me was that I hadn’t seen my jumping spider sling in a few days. I went to look around her enclosure to see if she was alright. I lifted up a crystal to check if she was underneath, and she was! She was healthy and alive. Somehow my grip on the crystal slipped and she narrowly missed it by jumping. It was horrifying!! I cried from the panic lol. I no longer use anything heavy in my enclosures! It’s okay Kat, a lot of us have been there!! Hey Kat! Did you see the new arrival tarantula enclosures for aboreal T’s at tarantula cribs? The “clear edition” how much more transparent do you think it is compared to the regular treehouse enclosures?

I've seen this happen on soo many channels you can never be too careful. Invest in a pair of "longlockers" it's adjustable vicegrips and they will save your Ts as well as make your life easier.

tips: don't panic immediately and don't get so much afraid of them urticating hairs... always avoid panicking.

Glad all is well. I cringe every time I see someone picking up large or awkward objects with their tongs. Glass water bowls anyone? Amirite! 😁 Anyway, as someone suggested, locking hemostats are a good thing to have. Also a long pair of needle nose pliers if you can't find that.

Yeah, I would pick up my plastic water cups and one time I spilled the entire thing on one of my tarantulas because the tweezers decided "yeah good grip isn't my thing"

I use 2 tongs at a time to move stuff from inside the enclosure because my tarantulas have wild feeding responses haha. Brachypelmas are the worst for hair kicking. Idk what is worse honestly, that genus or Nhandus.

@@kennybolt4337 it’s more that they lace their entire enclosure in hairs to deter predators.. that combined with popular belief (well earned) that they are the the worst. You will never forget the day you get haired 😁

Rugrats: Season 3 episode 19.. spike runs away, his parents try getting him a "replacement pet". One of those was a tarantula they "Defanged" so it couldn't bite and I know it's a cartoon but I was genuinely offended. I wonder how many people thought they could get "defanged" spider🙄🙄🙄

Oh my gosh, my heart stopped, I'm glad she's OK. It's awful when you accidentally hurt your babies, the amount of times I've kicked or tripped over my kitties because they sneak behind and through my legs as I am walking, proper scissor effect as they're trapped between each ankle, I feel awful after. Like I say, so glad she's OK though. You didn't look out of focus either 💜
